can't believe this boycott is still going on. My mother used to boycott Nestle. Far be it from me to suggest that another strategy might be used?

Oh, and Body Shop? Really? Shock Shock

Pannacotta · 17/03/2012 18:10

I boycott both Nestle and Tesco, Even if it does tmake much difference at least I feel like I am not lining their pockets.
Its not that hard to boycott Nestle as most of the food on that list linked to is processed rubbish anyway tbh.

Richocet · 17/03/2012 19:10

My link shows they haven't changed all that much. AFAIK, they also place this 'coffee creamer' amongst baby milk on the shelves. Nice Hmm

I boycott as many brands as I know about and I don't beat myself up about the ones I 'miss'.

On account of being human and not perfect.

The one I particularly boycott is Tesco as it's relatively easy to not give them my grocery money every year. However on the odd occasion I've needed petrol and been driving past I've got it there.

C0smos · 17/03/2012 19:34

I live in a developing country in Africa, just been to check out my can of Nestlé formula. On the front at the top is the usual breast in best message, fairly decent size letters, then round the side the same is mentioned highlighted in red with the words warning in caps.
where they could improve is that the message is only written in English whereas every other instruction is written in 2 more African languages so unless you are English literate you wouldn't be able to read the warning so definitely work to do there.
whilst the warning is fairly prominent there is so much writing all over the can with instructions etc that it would be easy to miss.
I would say though that formula milk is so expensive, a large tin would be well over a days wages for a low income worker and totally beyond the reach of someone on a grant. having said that our breast feeding rates are pretty dismal because most mums are back at work after 6 - 12 weeks.

Birdsgottafly · 17/03/2012 19:58

Its not that hard to boycott Nestle

My dog will only eat Butchers dog food mixed with dry, so it can be difficult to not buy certain brands, because they have got 'a finger in every pie'.

wannaBe · 17/03/2012 21:29

but boycotting is a personal choice.

Boycott nestle - that's your choice and nobody is judging you for it.

But all this sanctimonious judging of those who do not is ridiculous. Because ultimately we all, every single one of us, give money to companies who indulge in dubious immoral practices. We all do things of which others might not approve. If you ar meat eater you wouldn't appreciate being preached at by vegetarians or by greenpeace fenatics if you buy products with, say, palm oil in them, or give to other companies who have a hand in deforestation and so the list goes on.

So nestle have some questionable practices in the third world and you disagree with them. fine. I disagree with any company who indulges in any of the above-mentioned practices, but boycotting doesn't actually make a difference, and unless you boycott every single company who has ever done something immoral you have no place to judge anyone else for not following your choices.

Richocet · 17/03/2012 21:35

Not judging, just trying to educate Smile

Perhaps I ought to scrap the few pounds I give to charity each week, after all, its just a drop in the ocean, and if you can't give to them all...

OP posts:
PlayEatSleep · 17/03/2012 21:44

Boycotting might well have an impact. Mcdonalds has made quite a lot of changes following the bad publicity, so has GAP and Nike.
One has to start somewhere.
I definitely try to avoid Nestle as much as I can.

wannaBe · 17/03/2012 22:06

there's a difference and you know it. By giving to charity you can make a difference to the people represented by that charity. By boycotting a company you are making a personal statement that you disagree with that company's practices. But it doesn't actually make a difference to the company itself. Nestle is very clear evidence of that.

But no-one has said you shouldn't boycott them if that's how you feel. What people have said is that everyone has their own feelings on company practices, and they themselves do not wish to boycott and should not be judged for it. that is all.

tangledupinblue2 · 17/03/2012 22:10

Absolutely playeatsleep

Apathy on these issues isn't going to do anything positive IMO.

Grin
tangledupinblue2 · 17/03/2012 22:11

Surely it reduces their profits wannabe?

wannaBe · 17/03/2012 22:19

does it though?

For a company like gap that only has one income stream i.e. clothing, it's easier to make that impact. But for a company such as nestle who has a hand in hundreds and hundreds of different products it is virtually impossible to make that impact. Especially when as well as their own branded products, they also have a hand in the manufacture of own brand products. so for example, if you buy shop brand shreddies, or other breakfast cereals that are replaced by shop brand, you are still giving money to nestle because they are manufactured by nestle.

Richocet · 17/03/2012 22:24

But if everyone just boycotted Nescafé (the most popular) that would make an impact, no?

OP posts:
WhaleOilBeefHookedIWill · 17/03/2012 22:25

Sorry I've just discovered the almost orgasmic joy that is peanut punch. No can do

exoticfruits · 17/03/2012 22:25

No-look at the list!

bumbleymummy · 17/03/2012 22:26

I still boycott them OP - it's not actually that hard even though the list looks quite intimidating. There are plenty of alternatives out there.

wannaBe · 17/03/2012 22:27

"But if everyone just boycotted Nescafé (the most popular) that would make an impact, no?" no.

Richocet · 17/03/2012 22:28

I've not judged anybody, BTW. It's sometimes useful to have all the facts about who your handing your money over too.

I think it's also useful to know the facts about other unethical companies. It's useful to broadcast these facts do that individuals can make an informed decision about which products they buy.

I have the info on Nestlé, I've decided not to spend my money with them. My choice, just sharing that.

I'm not sure you've been entitled helpful, wannaBe. In fact I'm not sure what your agenda is hereHmm you don't work for then do you?

OP posts:
wannaBe · 17/03/2012 22:37

no op you haven't been judgemental, but others have.

who said anything about being helpful? This is an opinion forum, people are entitled to voice their opinions here. If you don't like the fact that people say a boycott is pointless then don't post threads in ibu about boycotting.

Richocet · 17/03/2012 22:40

You're being quite incessant though wannaBe. We did hear you the first ya know Hmm

OP posts:
wannaBe · 17/03/2012 22:52

your point being?

This is a public forum. People are entitled to post how and where and what they want. If you don't like that, don't post in ibu and then get defensive and start accusing those that disagree with you of working for the company you are posting about. That's a pretty pathetic retort. It is entirely possible that people don't agree with a nestle boycott without actually being on their payroll y'know.

theodorakis · 18/03/2012 08:06

How unutterably tedious this nestle fuss is. We are all old enough to decide for ourself without the endless porpaganda from leftie loons thanks. I love nestle coffee creamer and formula

theodorakis · 18/03/2012 08:25

And this OP is really starting to get my goat, last thread about mothers being sued by FF adult children. you OP are clearly a slightly unhinged individual with an agenda and BF obsession, either that or a fuzzy haired rainbow welly wearing troll. I am going to break my goldren rule of free speech and report you.

OhDoGetAGrip · 18/03/2012 08:44

theo my thoughts exactly...
