One person does not a country make

i couldn't even tell you what c babies is i don't watch bbc television.

Bucharest · 17/03/2012 13:35

DoraDaisy- you know later on,they have proper telly on for grown ups. You might try watching that instead of sitting watching children's programmes.

Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about trivia.

GhastlyBespoke · 17/03/2012 13:38

It's amazing how on St Patricks day loads of people suddenly recall that their uncle's, cousin's, wife's, dog is Irish therefore they are by association and it's an excuse for an all day piss up.

If Cbeebies make mention of other saints days then they should include it. If they don't ... meh.

RuleBritannia · 17/03/2012 14:51

Mention St Patrick only if St David was mentioned. Fairness, please.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/03/2012 15:06

A snake? Eh? Confused

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/03/2012 15:07

Ffs @ demanding it be acknowledged. I sat with dd last week and watched a fab programme on cbeebies all about Purim. I've seen the same programme covering Diwali and several others. It's entertaining and educating, that's all. Don't get your spanx in a knot Hmm

sandyboots · 17/03/2012 15:19

YABU

HalfPastWine · 17/03/2012 15:32

I think it's great that these significant dates are recognised and celebrated. Isn't that what being a multi cultural country is all about.

If you don't want to get involved then don't join in the celebration but as an earlier poster said, what harm is there in an acknowledgement.

Children will be learning about these occasions at school so why shouldn't it extend to children's television.

Debsbear · 17/03/2012 15:34

I didn't see any reference to St Davids Day. It would be nice if they did mention them (even better if we all got a bank holiday for them!) but it should be all or none.

zipzap · 17/03/2012 15:37

I think the only reason other places 'celebrate' at Patrick's day is because the local publicans and bar owners etc saw a money making opportunity as there were lots of Irish expats around and they saw it as a way to get them to come to their bar as they knew that the expats were likely to want to celebrate and thus spend money on booze which translated into profits for them. And then it grew from there.

Definitely think it should only be covered on cbeebies if st George, st David and st Andrew also get covered too. Very Hmm Shock by your claims of it being more of a worldwide holiday, just because another country celebrates it, there's no history of it being celebrated in mainland Britain so don't really see the point in starting to celebrate it now, particularly in preference to the day if our own patron saints. Very strange.

HalfPastWine · 17/03/2012 16:00

zipzap you state a good point re it being a money making opportunity. I think it's like that for most significant dates. The reason they're hyped up so much is because lots of money can be made from them and it keeps the economy going.

cakewench · 17/03/2012 16:03

YANBU. They do seem to make a point of mentioning holidays from around the world. Perhaps they only are interested in the more exotic ones.

TidyDancer · 17/03/2012 16:03

YABU. And I agree with whoever said the expectation for St Patricks Day to be celebrated worldwide is annoying.

JugsMcGee · 17/03/2012 16:08

They had a big feature on St David's day, it was quite nice. They followed a couple of little girls making cawl and Welsh cakes, making a dragon for the parade and going to a dance in the evening. I thought it was quite educational, so would be nice to do the same for the other saints.

BananasInBloomers · 17/03/2012 16:32

Thats right JugsMcGee they did. I thought I would see something on it but alas no. FWIW do the English not celebrate St Georges day wherever they are? I think the reason that everyone gets in on the St Patricks Day celebrations is because Ireland's history is so depressive. You only have to look to back about 100 years ago where people were killed for speaking their own native language, where people had land taken from them because of religion.

BukimiNoTaniGensho · 17/03/2012 16:45

atheists don't all get upset at any hint of religion Hmm. Celebrations of patron saints days are far more cultural than they are religious. If anything we can celebrate wrestling more and more control from the churches, even of their own stuff!

Ireland is a foreign country, not an adjucnt of the UK. Why would a UK programme feature a foreign celebration? Would you expect them to do so for all european conutries?

NorksAreMessy · 17/03/2012 16:47

Shamrock :o

BananasInBloomers · 17/03/2012 16:47

Well seeing as NI is still part of Britain it wouldnt be unreasonable to see some mention.

Raahh · 17/03/2012 16:55

Well, they've just made several references to it during the birthday cards segment- which is usually repeated throughout the day, so they have acknowledged it.

I hate Lets Celebrate- has that creepy storyteller bloke in it, from 'Razzle Dazzle'
.

BananasInBloomers · 17/03/2012 16:58

Raahh it should be a picture of a very shell shocked couple Grin

BukimiNoTaniGensho · 17/03/2012 16:58

NI is not part of Britain, its part of the UK. Thats not actually the same thing.

ballroomblitz · 17/03/2012 16:59

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, not Britain

ballroomblitz · 17/03/2012 17:01

x-post Bukimi

Saying that I've always seen St Paddy's as an excuse mainly to get drunk Grin - N.Irish, pregnant and unusually very sober for a change today Shamrock
