To admit to being on mn

It seems like people think I am the world's biggest sadcase if I mention it in conversation. I'm mostly a lurker btw and this is the first I have posted in ages.

Just wondering, do you tell people or is it taboo and I have missed this important unspoken rule?

whenever i mention mn to people they say don't you mean netmums Grin

DonkeyTeapot · 15/03/2012 18:04

They used to mock, 'til I told them this is where I learned to make pear drop flavoured vodka. Then they said "...and this is a PARENTING forum??"

FluffyBunnyWunnyMummyKins · 15/03/2012 18:05

Pear drop vodka? Is that in recipes? I love this place! Grin

EduStudent · 15/03/2012 18:11

I actively avoid telling people (as a 22 year-old, childless student, it would ust be met with Confused and Hmm ) although my boyfriend knows.

He half takes the piss but is also half secretly impressed. Especially when he found out it was all politics, bumsex and that there's a troll-hunting policy Grin

choppychopster · 15/03/2012 18:14

The company I work for were considering doing some advertising and promotions with MN, so several of my colleagues came on to have a look. I mentioned that I used the site occasionally. The thread they stumbled upon was the recent "Center Parcs and anal sex" one. They looked at me in a whole new light after that! Grin

MrsHoarder · 15/03/2012 18:15

DH knows because he sees what's on my laptop, and sometimes tells people to embaress me. I never tell anyone and need to namechange as he saw my logon yesterday...

EnsignRo · 15/03/2012 18:16

Mentioned it only today, in order to explain where I'd heard about a foot file.

God, that makes me sound super interesting doesn't it? Hmm

PolkaDottedShoes · 15/03/2012 18:25

Grin at nethuns

SparkyMcSparrow · 15/03/2012 18:31

The only person who knows about my MN habit is dh.

I swear he's going to out me one day Confused

BlackBagFaithfulBorderBinLiner · 15/03/2012 18:33

Am secretly hoping that dear SIL reads some of the posts on her

silverbay · 15/03/2012 18:36

I never mention it, but that's mostly because the name is soooooooo embarassingly awful.

DressDownFriday · 15/03/2012 18:39

< stands up > my name is DressDown and I am a MNetter

AnnaBegins · 15/03/2012 18:52

EduStudent, I am 22 and child-less too (though as of recently not a student!) and I don't tell people either.

Though it's so annoying when people ask how you know something and the only answer is "urmmm... on the internet?" Or when there's an excellent thread I'd love to share with DP but it's not worth it for the subsequent teasing Grin

LucyManga · 15/03/2012 18:55

Dh, my mum and sister know I am an addict. otherwise, it is tabooooooo Wink

loveulotslikejellytots · 15/03/2012 19:02

22 with no children here too. I think DH would pass out if he knew I was on here. My best friend knows I'm addicted to MN but no one else Blush

Iggly · 15/03/2012 19:03

I'm Iggly and I'm a MNer

DH and his family know I love use MN and dh knows my login details.

However I do get a bit Blush about it so don't mention to my friends.

storminabuttercup · 15/03/2012 19:11

I always refer to where I read things as 'on a parenting site I sometimes use'

DP know it's mumsnet and often drops it into conversation with friends. I don't think anyone I know uses it though.

exoticfruits · 15/03/2012 19:17

I agree FolkGirl-not only do I keep it a secret, but I would deny having ever heard of it!

carabos · 15/03/2012 19:20

I've only mentioned it once, at a dinner party. There was an embarrassed silence then someone immediately changed the subject. I got the message and haven't uttered a word since. Grin

Dustinthewind · 15/03/2012 19:23

I never do, if it's ever mentioned, usually as a result of something in the papers, I adopt a baffled expression. Grin
My children are too old for it to be a consideration for me in most people's eyes. Because all MN talks about is babies and children and mummystuff. Of course.

slobberychops · 15/03/2012 19:45

carabos do you think they were scared of being outed too? Grin

MissVerinder · 15/03/2012 19:56

I can't wait to meet a RL MNer.

But then i'm sad like that, and if I did, I'd keep my NN a secret!

Very often I think of getting a MN pin badge.

Maybe they should do one for the We Believe You campaign or would that not be posh enough Grin

NoDontLickThat · 15/03/2012 19:57

The few times I've mention it have been met with giggles Blush apart from one time a friend said "Aw that's cute!", I wish he'd have just laughed instead! Now if I'm referring to mumsnet I say 'an Internet forum I go on', and carry on talking so there isn't a chance for anyone to ask what one!

Boomerwang · 15/03/2012 20:15

I don't have a problem with mentioning mumsnet, I've even invited my SIL to take a look. My mum might look and then not bother with it. She tends to stick to property sites and ebay.

However, I used to play World of Warcraft and I would die in shame just picking up my pre-ordered copy of the next expansion pack, despite being in a queue of like-minded people Blush

And when people ask how I met my boyf I really want to make up a story, but since we were countries apart when we met, I have to admit that I heard his voice over comms on the pc whilst playing a game and fell in love with him.
