Mince should not be the 'meat' in a 'meat and 2 veg' type meal

I was horrified! Surely if cow is to be the main meat then it should take a solid form eg steak or roast beef

My reasons are:
I want to cut up my meat, not have to lift it on a spoon
I want to control my veg/potato/meat ratio of each mouthful - I can't do this with mince because it's all mixed up
Gravy has already been added! I want to control my quantity of gravy
Mince is designed for meals where an even distribution of meat is required in a sauce or pie, not as a main meat

My friend says I'm overreacting but I feel very strongly about this!

Have to admit my savoury mince is not good. Meat goes hard and gravy is watery. I long for the smooth rich mince of the school canteen. What is the secret?

GabrielOak · 14/03/2012 11:51

Oh to have the luxury to choose meat in 'a solid form eg steak or roast beef'!

Times is 'ard here. We're having to cut costs so we only have meat 2 or 3 times a week now and when we do it's mince or something chopped up in a casserole / stew where a small amount of meat goes a long way....

And for what it's worth, DH and all the kids LOVE mince in gravy with roast potatoes and a big pile of veg, it's one of their fave dinners!

So YABU

savoury mince with carrots and onions served in a Yorkshire pudding with a bit of mash on the side :-)

Lovely! What time do you want me?

ZZZenAgain · 14/03/2012 11:54

is it that you think it looks regurgitated? I don't mind it, it is just chopped up meat, isn't it in the end? Or is it the bits that get thrown into mince that you don't like, odd bits and pieces of a cow etc

If you like to slice through a chunk of steak, you like it. It is not a crime to dislike mince but it is meat

McCrappy · 14/03/2012 12:32

Mmmmm mince and onions. Don't add gravy though - that's gross.

Why on Earth are you eating mince with a spoon? Are you 2?

chinam · 14/03/2012 13:19

YABVVU. Mince, onion, beans and gravy with potatoes on the side. Yum. Will also be trying out the mince in the yorkshire pudding.

whackamole · 14/03/2012 13:20

Mince and tatties - yum! Carrots in the mince, mashed potatoes with loads of butter, peas or cabbage on the side.

Although one of my grandpas was famously so anti vegetables that he wouldn't even eat mince that had onion in it...

Also according to my mum, browning mince first is new fangled way of doing it - in her day you just gave it a good boiling - grey mince - yuck!

Ah, mince.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 14/03/2012 21:06

Another Scotswoman here brought up on mince and tatties, mince and skirlie and my favourite from the 1970s family gatherings, mince on a roll.

Puremince · 14/03/2012 21:11

Another Scot here - mince 'n' mealie'; mince 'n' tatties; mince 'n' clapshot; mince 'n' doughballs and good old savoury mince. Fine.

Mince on a roll. Classic Scottish cuisine Grin

My dad used to put virtually anything on a roll. His favourite being a scotch pie!!
