Parking illegally outside school

deviladvocate · 13/03/2012 23:03

Had a big row this afternoon with one of the regular offenders at school - on the zig zag lines, no possible excuse, she was aggressive and entitled.

Head has spoken to the regular offenders, signs have already been attempted, there are regular reminders in the newsletter. All ignored.

We need some constructive ideas for how to address this, help!

Oh lord, even fatism gets dragged into a debate about general idiots and selfish people, Lucy88 please grow up ffs, many average sized or slim people flaunt the rules about parking so dont use this issue for your own twisted agenda about 'fattys' ffs

DaisyAndConfused · 14/03/2012 07:56

What sashh said.

I went to a campus uni where no one without a permit was even allowed to drive onto the campus. Any cars which did had a huge sticker plastered onto passenger window saying "YOU HAVE ILLEGALLY TRESPASSED ONTO PRIVATE PROPERTY".

It took a good hour to scrub off and was vair effective.

A child was inches away from death in our local school because of this problem, saved by the head teacher diving in front of moving cars to push him out of the way. It made the national news and still the bastards park illegally!!!

Threeprinces · 14/03/2012 08:00

We also have the same problem and then again it's the same offenders most of the time.

We have a governor who is a PCSO so comes and blitzes for a week every now and then, that stops it for a few weeks but no more. A few years ago a different governor did approach someone and it ended up in confrontation with the police being called.

In our school the offenders are generally 'dodgy' parents, who are already known to the authorities for other reasons, parking on the zig zags or ditzy blondes just 'dropping off'.

We recently have announced that pictures will be taken and passed to police, let's see if that works.

MrsHoarder · 14/03/2012 08:02

A blue badge would be no excuse, these do not permit parking on school zig-zag markings (link).

joben · 14/03/2012 08:15

What annoys me is when it is secondary school aged children being driven to a school which supposedly has a .5km catchment in an urban area with numerous bus routes, whose parents still park on the zig-zags and wait outside the gates in the 4x4s, smoking, and spray tanned, for their lazy (fat and thin) over-pampered children-guess where I live anyone?

Chopstheduck · 14/03/2012 08:17

Even traffic wardens make no difference at our school, they still park on the no loading zone, and she does nothing. I really don't understand it. It does stop people parking on the zig zags when she is there, but soon as she goes they are back. One woman persistently parked right in front of the school gate everyday for the 4 years her dd was at the school.

DS has a blue badge, but it is useless at the school, since it is all zigzag or no loading, neither of which we can park on.

Chopstheduck · 14/03/2012 08:18

the one at the gate to, was INSIDE of the zigzag lines, so couldn't even get ticketed!

TheHumancatapult · 14/03/2012 08:32

Here is bad even to point cars parking right on the path , zig zags over dropped kerbs ( personal hate as means I can not get on or off footpath

School ever so often have someone outside with a camera taking pictures of worse offenders but they just move 50 yards down the road

StrawberrytallCAKE · 14/03/2012 08:52

I parked on the zig zags once. DD goes to a nursery attached to a primary school which also operate previously names 'kiss and drop' (and pickup) using a roundabout and queue system. I thought as the pickup queue had died down at 4pm it would be ok to park on the zigzags which are on a long narrow (but wide enough to fit two cars) to run in and pick dd up. When I got out people were going mental, there was a lady talking to a teacher and pointing angrily at my car and very angry looking mahogany boden wearing 4x4 drivers. DD decided she didn't want to get in her car seat so it took at least 5 minutes to deal with this.

I only did it because I didnt think I would be an obstruction and I'm not allowed to erm kiss and pickup.

I hope to now be absolved of my previous car parking sin, I am sorry and will never do it again.

YonWhaleFish · 14/03/2012 09:10

Was your house cheap? I can't think of any other reason to buy next to a school, unless you get off on being angry? No one should block your drive. You get angry over other things though Somer, its part of living next to a school.

How about catchment areas? Being able to walk to said school?
It's not acceptable to block driveways and roads, and it's not "part of living next to a school" that you should put up with it! I also live next to a school. And in nice proximity to rail and motorway networks. And near enough to walk to high school and college.

Why can't people like you get to grips with the law? It is illegal to park on the zig zags!

zippy539 · 14/03/2012 09:12

Our school has the same problem and recently started a (parent led) scheme. Every morning and afternoon orange cones are placed along the zig-zag lines and across the school gate so you can't park there without actually knocking over the cones. The area is also patrolled by volunteer parents wearing orange vests and the pco makes the odd appearance. It was tough going at first and lots of abuse was hurled - I think it would have been easier if parents had received prior warning of the scheme, as it was it just started up out of the blue. However it has been vv effective and the area in front of the school is now clear. Maybe you could suggest something similar?

StrawberrytallCAKE · 14/03/2012 09:17

I don't like being pigeon holed but for me I didn't realise it was illegal and thought best to park there instead of outside someones house. It was in the first week of DD being at nursery and I wont be doing it again.

CharminglyOdd · 14/03/2012 09:17

If you live anywhere near Tyne and Wear one of the LAs (can't remember which... South Tyneside maybe?) used some central funding to buy a little smart car with a camera. Its sole purpose is to go around snapping and fining people who park on the zigzags outside schools as it causes a massive problem in that area. They might be willing to lend it?

Fecklessdizzy · 14/03/2012 09:30

The main offenders at our old school were spindly orange gym-bunnies who turned up in huge tracey-tractors and cycling shorts ( 'cus no morning is complete without a parade of over-privelaged camel-toes Grin )

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/03/2012 09:32

I remember seeing some bloke that had just dropped off his child while parked on the grass verge right next to the entrance, cars parked all along the opposite side, a ruddy great big bus trying to get past and queuing traffic either side.

He sprayed mud at all the people going into the school as he pulled off!

DelayedPixies · 14/03/2012 09:42

This morning 2 cars were parked on the pavement at the zig zags. Drives me nuts.

IME it's people of all shapes and sizes that do this.

The only thing that they have in common is that they are all lazy, selfish gits who think that it's only their kids that matter.

DD's school is on a narrow residential road with parking only on one side (& loads of driveways). We have had a spate of parents parking on the pavement on the school side of the road. The Head often stands by the gate in the mornings but stopped for a while and during this time it got worse.

I have seen parents drive up and park on the pavement while the children are coming out of school. I can't believe people are so self centred and so unconcerned about the safety of other people's children. The school sec goes out and tells them to move and they have an arrangement with the local police station where the school reports the reg numbers. First time they get contacted by the police and told not to do it again. Second time it's a fine. Third time and they get prosecuted.

YonWhaleFish · 14/03/2012 10:07

I can't believe people are so self centred and so unconcerned about the safety of other people's children.

I can, there are plenty of threads on here with people chatting about loving their own but not generally being bothered by anyone else's.

GladysLeap · 14/03/2012 10:28

There's a world of difference between not being bothered about other people's children and actually putting them in danger.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 14/03/2012 10:39

Same here. Our school is posh inner city. Very narrow roads that you can barely get one car through when cars are parked both sides so always a bit fraught anyway. Entitled swines parking on the zigziags, in the staff car park which has an ENORMOUS polite sign asking parents not to park in there. Parents blovking the roads, but also the walkers just strolling all over the roads (and there are good pavements).

I do drive the DC to school, we live 3 miles away as we had to move to a cheaper area when DH became ill and lost his job a couple of years back. We live 100m from another school but getting 3 places is impossible. Same parking issues at that school too. A couple of months back a child was run over because of a bastard parent parking on the zigzags :(

MIssMarplesSideKick · 14/03/2012 10:40

If you bothered to read properly, you would see I said YELLOW lines! perfectly legal. My blue badge is available to go on dash, its sitting just below, I don't get out, I don't even go to school much, as kids at secondary, it is a very quick drop off.
