to hate going to the hairdressers

My hair hasn't been cut since October and desperately needs doing but I don't want to go. I find it such a chore and I really dislike sitting in front of a mirror for over an hour. I find it difficult to make small talk to a complete stranger and since I'm not going away this year I will have nothing to talk about. I dont think it helps that I don't know what I want so come out feeling like I've spent £40 for a trim. I'm not the only one who feels like this am I? I can't understand how someone could go every week!

I hate going too, so we have a mobile hairdresser that comes to out house, she does me and my two kids for £12, she is lovely

JamRagRolyPoly · 13/03/2012 10:26

I never talk to them except when you first sit down and discuss what you want. Get a magazine or your phone out and bury your nose in it

OnlyWantsOne · 13/03/2012 10:26

I HATE it too. Find it unbearable. Why dont you have a look at the MUmsnet hair cut threads?

catgirl1976 · 13/03/2012 10:27

I hate it with a passion (but I have really embaraasing psoarisis on my scalp) Blush

due to shame i only go about once a year :(

nobutyeahbut · 13/03/2012 10:27

YANBU!
Going to the hairdressers is my idea of a nightmare for all the reasons you stated.

Imagine how pleased i was when my younger (now 31) sister announced she was going to be a hairdresser.

She trained, qualified and then decided to change jobs and now does something totally different - she still always does my hair though and i never have to go the the awful bloody place!

CailinDana · 13/03/2012 10:27

I get my hair cut once a year. And even then I spend at least a month working up the courage to go. I absolutely hate it. So YANBU, and thank you for making me feel slightly less like a freak!

thepeoplesprincess · 13/03/2012 10:28

I haven't been since I was 3, so YADNBU.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDawn · 13/03/2012 10:29

I haven't been to a hairdresser for years, I HATE it. DHs neice used to give me a buzz cut with abut an inch left on top every so often, but we haven't seen her for ages so it's halfway down my back now. I hate it, but I hate hairdressers more. Last time this happened I got pissed off one day when it was hot and just got my friend to hack my ponytail off, then trim round the bottom of what was left to even it up a bit. That will probably happen again soon. I looked at the MN haircut, but her hair just looked exactly the same before and after - long and scraggly, and I want a haircut that will actually get rid of some hair.

ViviPru · 13/03/2012 10:29

I like it. I sit and work in a room on my own all day every day so an hours' being indulged by someone who is doing a really good job at pretending to be interested in the minutiae of my existence makes a pleasant change. Only twice a year though.

PineappleBed · 13/03/2012 10:32

I have to take my glasses off too so I never really know what they're doing until it's too late.

The only thing worse that going is having to go to one for the first time and not knowing if you're going to come out looking like you're wearing a wig

TunipTheVegemal · 13/03/2012 10:37

I hate it, so I'm training up dh to cut my hair.

He's been practicing on the kids and he can manage a bob now.

FrillyMilly · 13/03/2012 10:42

What's the Mumsnet hair cut? I've had a quick search on my phone and can't find anything. I need to go to a new hairdressers as we've moved house so that makes me want to go less. In my entire life I've had one great haircut, when I went back a few months later that hairdresser had left.

mrsnesbit · 13/03/2012 10:48

I loath it too, its a bloody trauma!

I have a friend wh is a mobile hairdresser. I go to hers or she comes here, we have a coffe, a cake, and my hair s done in 40 minutes, no mirrors, no small talk and no huge bill.

You can tell she is a hairdresser tho as she cannot bear silences and never shuts up, im glad when she has gone, but she doesnt hang a round, as she has the next customer to get to.
Mobile is defo the way to go Grin

flamingtoaster · 13/03/2012 10:55

This is one of the mumsnet haircut threads:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/1403769-I-bloody-love-the-MN-haircut

I cut my own hair but don't do the mumsnet haircut ... yet!

CMOTDibbler · 13/03/2012 10:58

I've always hated - but now I use a mobile hairdresser who is amazing, and he cuts my hair while my neighbours highlights are developing. He charges £17, and its the best haircut I have ever had

Anonymumous · 13/03/2012 11:04

YADNBU - I have an appointment for tomorrow morning and I am dreading it. I haven't been for two years and I really can't put it off any longer - my "fringe" is down to my shoulders, and I am expecting a baby in three weeks and don't want to look like Captain Caveman in the post-birth photographs. But I will be sooooo relieved when it's all over!

NowThenWreck · 13/03/2012 11:12

YANBU!
I have long hair, but only by default as I put off going to the hairdressers all the time.
I find it really embarrassing! I hate strangers touching me unless I am really drunk and that staring at my eyebags next to the 21 year old stylist make me want to top myself.
I can't even imagine why some people go in for other "pampering" activities. The thought of anyone I didn't know VERY well, waxing my bikini line for instance makes me come out in a cold sweat!

NowThenWreck · 13/03/2012 11:13

I need a mobile hairdresser CMOT! That way I wouldnt have to look in the mirror the whole time.
I always thought they were for old ladies though Blush

CMOTDibbler · 13/03/2012 11:29

Nowthen - thats whats brilliant - no mirror and no faffing. This hairdresser is a gay bloke in his early 30's who got bored of salon politics so went mobile. Quite a few mobile hairdressers in our area from talking to people
And he does exactly as you ask !

warmandwooly · 13/03/2012 21:19

I hate the small talk-just cut the hair
I hate having to do the oohing and arring afterwards when they show you the cut
Hate having to look in the mirror while its been done
The glossy mags they have I have usually bought the rest are not my cup of tea
The falsness of the compliments- wasted if I am paying sixty quid to get my haircut then there will be no tip

YNBU

champagnesupernova · 13/03/2012 21:27

I love the idea of a mobile hairdresser especially as I LOATE the hanging about they make you do when you have colour done.
Tried it - and ended up washing me hair in the kitchen sink and cleaning up all the foils my self afterward so not v much of a treat hence so much cheaper
Anyone worked out a way aorund this?

Reallyfaroutlookinghat · 13/03/2012 22:45

Agreed. I find it's so awkward. I hate when they wash your hair and you're like ho hum what do I now? Stare at the ceiling? Where do I put my hands?

Afterwards you have to walk your seat in a big black Batman cape.

Then what do you talk about? You can't not have a conversation with someone while they're doing your hair. That would be even weirder.

Plus the tip. That's another conundrum.

It's such a minefield.

Bewilderedmum · 13/03/2012 22:57

I hate it - I'd much rather go to the dentist - he's a good laugh!

DamonSalvatoreIsMyLoveSlave · 13/03/2012 23:04

I love it. I just zone out for a couple of hours, read trashy mags, drink coffee and chat to my hairdresser about rubbish.

TalkinPeace2 · 13/03/2012 23:04

my hair is always up or in a plait and always smells of chlorine.
I chop the ends off every couple of months.
works just fine
