To have been furious with my grandma this morning?

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:05

DD and I went into town with my grandma this morning, DD is almost 9mo, so at that stage of putting EVERYTHING in her mouth and trying to eat it.

Anyway, we pulled up outside a shop for GM to nip into, me and DD waited in the car, she soon started crying because she got bored of the car not moving. GM comes out of the shop and goes in the boot and writes a birthday card out and DD was getting more upset. So off we go in the car, good 5 minutes travelling to the car park. I get out, open the back door to get out DD and she was sat there, holding the polythene wrapper off the birthday card!!! My usually sensible and very overly safety concerned GM had given my 9mo DD a plastic wrapper to play with! I immediatly took it off her and said to GM that she couldn't have stuff like that, she eats everything, and GM replied that she had her dummy in so thought she'd be fine. Luckily she kept her dummy in and just held the wrapper.

Aibu to think this was a really stupid thing to do? And was I justified in being furious?

meh.

Was it just a small card wrapper, or a full plastic bag?

Sounds a bit pfb. to be honest. I bet next child you'll be doing similar. It has to be something extreme to get that angry at a grandma for.

HappyCamel · 10/03/2012 22:08

I think you over reacted if granny was in the back with her. If you were both in the front with a bored screaming dd in the back then I think that was mean in the first place, but she certainly shouldn't have had the wrapper.

AdventureInKL · 10/03/2012 22:09

btw. I have a DD the same age. I gave her a plastic card wrapper this morning to stop her from eating the wrapping paper when I was wrapping a present.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:10

Grandma was driving, DD was in the back on her own in a rear facing seat behind me so I couldn't even see her.

It was the whole polythene wrapper off quite a large card.

YABU.

It doesn't sound like you're very furious with your lovely sounding GM Smile

I was at the checkout with 2 YO DD in a trolly right in front of me, I was paying attention and kept looking at her and she still managed to get hold of a plaggy bag and get it fully over her head! Shock

I felt really bad.

HappyCamel · 10/03/2012 22:14

Well next time get in the back with her and entertain her, poor kid

Birdsgottafly · 10/03/2012 22:17

It was a silly mistake. She probably thought that the crinkly noise would keep DD amused.

I had similar reactions with my first and second, by the time i had my third we had regular trips to A&E to get various offices flushed to remove what she had stuffed in them and i ignored what she managed to swallow and pass.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:19

She is lovely, and I was furious, but inwardly. GM does do a lot for all her family, too much even. But she is very overbearing with DD, even though she is GGC3, she just takes her from whoever is holding her,if she wants a cuddle, without asking if it's ok if me or whoever is holding her minds if she has a hold. She actually tried pulling her out of my arms once when she was hysterical and over-tired.

In my head I was fuming, but to her I was just mildly annoyed, I'd hate to upset her in anyway. I just needed to vent really I guess.

Although I'm fairly surprised people think this is an ok thing to do though!

YABU

That is all.

OriginalJamie · 10/03/2012 22:24

I think this is fairly low risk

Are her teeth strong enough to bite a bit off?
Could she fit it over her head?
Could she fit the whole thing in her mouth?

AgentZigzag · 10/03/2012 22:24

Awww do Great GMs have to get permission to have a cuddle with their much loved GC?

They should get special dispensation if they do.

Are you sure she wasn't just trying to soothe and help you and your baby rather than pulling her out of your arms?

TheSkiingGardener · 10/03/2012 22:25

Yabu. It would actually be quite hard to either eat or suffocat yourself with one of those crinkly wrappers. Try it.

Secondly, wtf is grandma doing taking your child out of your arms! I'd get that one sorted before worrying about the rest tbh.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:26

Poor kid? Just because she was bored and upset that the car had stopped? She was ok when we got moving again, she's such a drama queen!

OP posts:
OriginalJamie · 10/03/2012 22:27

Well your GM was attempting to make her feel not bored and upset

Drama queen ????

Birdsgottafly · 10/03/2012 22:29

I don't think that it is an ok thing to do, but most of us do siily things that we realise later could have been a choking risk.

In regards to taking your DD out of your arms, that may be out of order but you will always be mum to your DD, but she will love the closeness of your GM, i have some lovely memories of my great aunties.

DinahMoHum · 10/03/2012 22:30

how lovely and lucky to still have a nana to get cross with over silly little things

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:36

No zigzag of course not. It's the fact that she just takes her off people without asking them if they have finished having a cuddle and whether they mind if she has her. An example, I rarely see my dad and SM, last time I saw them SM had DD on her lap, had her for about a minute then GM walks in the room, spots DD and walks over, gets hold of her and lifts her off SM saying "come to nana!"

And I was trying to settle DD when she was hysterical and GM came over and tried taking her off me, to try and settle her herself, she was pulling her top half and I was trying to keep hold of her. It was an act of kindness on GMs part, just a little thoughtless, seeing as DD was only about 4wo at the time and I was still getting to grips with being a mum.

OP posts:
OriginalJamie · 10/03/2012 22:38

Yes, that is thoughtless, and annoying.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:41

Yes I know, drama queen at 9mo? Trust me, she gets very upset at the slightest thing you do to annoy her, like turning her beaker the right way up so she can actually get a drink out of it, or not allowing her to chew mobiles and tv remotes. Anything like that really, she's so impatient about everything, even getting in the bath too slowly annoys her!

Floggingmolly · 10/03/2012 22:42

It's not soft plastic, it's cellophane. There's a big difference.

rhondajean · 10/03/2012 22:43

I really don't think YAbu. There is a reason these things are marked not for small children, she doesn't need to bite it, if she sucked it it could easily go down her throat and choke her.

Tbh I am surprised so many people have no problem with this. Plastic does not allow air through. Babies chew and suck on things. Mix the two and its a disaster waiting to happen.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:44

Although, on my limited experience this could be how all babies are so actually she may not be a drama queen, but she is exactly like my neice was when she was a baby, and she is a drama queen, 3 going on 13 :o

galletti · 10/03/2012 22:44

She's YOUR Grandma? So she's your little one's Great Grandma? I know it is difficult sometimes, but you know what - Great Grandma won't be around for ever - and she probably knows that. I think she has earnt the right to be a little thoughtless sometimes, as long as she doesn't endanger anyone, especially your dd, and I honestly think she wasn't today. You sound like a lovely caring mum and grandaughter, but take deep breaths and realise how lucky you are to have your lovely family. PS Have you got some little toys in the car/ggm's car for this type of situation?

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 22:46

That's it! Cellophane! Not polythene! Knew I had it wrong but couldn't think of the right word.

AgentZigzag · 10/03/2012 22:47

Good post, definately agree galletti.
