For thinking it's NOT OK for a 9 month old baby to have alcohol. Even if it is licking wine off someone's finger.
Ok, so I'm not talking about a bottle of beer but I don't think I'm being PFB either.

Agree 100% OP. Why would it even occur to people to give a baby alcohol? I would consider that someone who did that had a serious problem with alcohol.

I had my "dummy" dipped in champagne by my grandad at my christening - it has long been a tradition... and, no, I don't drink as an adult, I no longer attend church or believe in God either....

We follow the DON'T-GIVE-ANYTHING-TO-ANY-CHILD-WITHOUT-THE-PARENTS-SAYSO rule.....

Gosh I was considering getting ds christened but by reading this christenings seem to be the breeding ground of baby alcohol pushers!

As vic reeves says "you can't give booze t'baby!"

My FIL once gave my sone (then three) a sip of his pint (DS asked what the drink tasted like). TBH I didn't really think anything of it at the time, it was one sip on one occasion, was almost immediately spat out in disgust and to my knowlege never happened again. Until DS was about 17!

LetsKateWin · 11/03/2012 19:37

Why would anyone do it? I just don't see the point. YANBU OP.

DarrowbyEightFive · 11/03/2012 19:53

My (now deceased) Irish FIL was insistent that he got all three of his sons off to sleep with brandy when they were babies. We thought he was joking until he offered to do the same for our DD. He genuinely could not see the harm in feeding babies spirits. Why the hell would you want to poison your own children? It's so easy to keep them away from alcohol (until a certain age, of course), you don't have to go out of your way to do so.

And we live on the 'continent', but admittedly not France, and I don't know of a single parent in DD's class (13 and 14 yo) who lets their DC have watered-down wine at meals. They might do so in private, but it's not socially acceptable as 'responsible' parenting. It's only in the UK I've ever encountered the view that giving small quantities to pre-pubescents is anything other than child neglect.

DarrowbyEightFive · 11/03/2012 19:53

Sorry, only in the UK AND Ireland...

ReallyTired · 11/03/2012 21:25

My ten year old has never tasted alcohol as far as I know. I would go ballastic if he was given an alcoholic drink.

I think giving babies booze is wrong and breaking a position of trust. They have no clue what they are drinking and the affect it will have.

troisgarcons I think who said this - And it's perfectly legal in the UK to serve a 5yo wine with a meal in a restaurant.
That's absolute rubbish, sorry. NOT true. NOWHERE in the UK is it legal to give a 5 year old a glass of wine in a restaurant.
What kind of idiot would want to try that in the first place is anyone's guess...
