To hate the use of the word cunt on mns

I have kind of get used to it over the months I have been on here. But I still really don't like the use of this word. It is a swear word for female genitals and I guess I think it is a fairly misogynistic insult to use. And it does surprise me that posters who in other ways seem very liberal use language that I see as misogynistic and disrespectful towards women.
So AIBU to think this?

It's the intent. If it spat out by some aggressive, pissed up nobber who is using it as a term of abuse, then it is ugly. But then all language can sound ugly if it's used aggressively.

Try saying it in a gentle way Grin. Or an affectionate way.

See, I said nobber? Is that less bad?

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 09:28

STFU Pag

If you were true gangstar, you'd have just hit me witrh ya basket.

Tsk, tsk.

Pagwatch · 08/03/2012 09:30

But I must be! I use cunt. What other explanation could there possibly be. It's so muthafucking confusing. Yo.

BarmyBiscuit · 08/03/2012 09:30

I don't mind it. I also grew up with twat having a completely different meaning to the one it supposedly has now.
Twitter also loves the word Cunt

TheRhubarb · 08/03/2012 09:31

You said it in your thread title though, so now we have to look at a cunt in active convos all the time.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 09:32

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 09:34

Yo! Cuffing u iz a hustler innit?

cocolepew · 08/03/2012 09:35

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 09:37

Yeah, yeah Pag likes weeding and?

I iz much 'arder than that, i sometimes shop in Asda.....

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 09:38

scarlett - I think it is misogynistic to use a word for female genitals as an insult. I don't have a problem with it being used as a descriptive word, but generally it is used on here as an insult.

OP posts:
AlbertoFrog · 08/03/2012 09:38

I was about to say much the same TheRhubarb

If you dislike it so much, ignore it. Don't use it. And certainly don't type it in a thread title.

At the end of the day though it's just a word. It's how words are used that can be offensive.

CuffingChunt · 08/03/2012 09:38

I chuffing iz a gangsta!

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 09:40

Sorry Alberto, it is how it si used. I wasn't clear in that.

Although I did laugh at your phrasing Rhubarb

Surely you can see the double standard though!

Why is any derogatory term for a man's genitalia absolutely fine and OK to use, but those for women are considered awful? True equality would be either hating all terms, or minding neither. I hate all this "oh it's such an awful word" business. Really? Why is it such an awful word? Maybe because so much misogynistic double standard has been applied to it, and perpetuated by you.

In general I swear a lot, but I'm not a huge fan of it. But just for the purposes of equality: dick, dick, dick, cunt, cunt, cunt. Neither really seems worse than the other - they just are, but I'd like to just stop swearing generally, I think Grin

My mum's blind side about this always makes me laugh - she uses twat a lot, mainly in Northern jokes. Yet she abhors cunt, seemingly not getting they mean the same thing!

Flisspaps · 08/03/2012 09:40

lesley33 but surely it's no different to using male genitalia words as insults -cock, dick, prick?

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 09:41

My wicker basket got more organic products in it than yours Cuffing.

MissTapestry · 08/03/2012 09:41

Pag, you int a gangsta if yo pants ain't on sho' fo sho. yo trackie bottoms should be 'angin rahnd yo kneez. Innit.

Just read that back and I don't actually understand my own post Grin

BlueNails · 08/03/2012 09:41

I use it sometimes and quite like using, I don't think I say it as a mean word.

The first time I hear my mum use it I spat my mouthful of tea at her I can't say cunt without chuckling to myself and picturing my mum sopping wet with my tea in her hair Grin

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 09:42

BlueNails LOL iz all.

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 09:44

Is it the same though as using male genetalia as an insult word given that in our culture male genitals tend to be seen in a positive way and female ones in a negative way? Not sure...just thinking this through. Perhaps I should post this in feminism

OP posts:
TheRhubarb · 08/03/2012 09:45

Least you didn't type it in caps cause then active convos would have had a big cunt in it. I can kinda cope with little cunts but not big ones.

scarletforya · 08/03/2012 09:45

Hmm, but what about using words for male genetalia as an insult? Is that misandric? I don't feel it is.

I just think the use of swear words is cathartic. We call someone a vagina or a penis to diffuse their importance, to make them seem proposterous and less threatening to us.

Swearing activates the same part of the brain as primitive warning vocalisations in animals. Uttering a taboo word is a release of tension. It serves a function! It's even been shown to decrease pain (but only when used occasionally, weirdly habitual swearers don't get the same relief or release....so screw you white van man! Grin)

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 08/03/2012 09:46

I've read this debate before in Feminism, but I'm sure it will be welcomed and a good fiery debate. If you choose to re-post :)
