...think their views and beliefs should take precedence over anyone else's?

LeeCoakley Exactly that is unreasonable its unfair that schools do that I would not allow my child to participate in any religious activities in school apart from RE as long as the education is about ALL religions

suzikettles · 07/03/2012 16:10

I know some Christians who think their views and beliefs should take precedence over anyone elses' (including other Christians, in fact mainly other Christians.).

I know some Christians that are very interested in other people's views and beliefs.

I know some Christians that are extremely preoccupied in making sure their views and beliefs don't upset or inconvienience people who disagree with them.

Mostly though they just bumble along like everyone else.

MrsBethel · 07/03/2012 16:11

Both of these things are true:

  1. Most Christians I know are perfectly reasonable.
  2. Some of the archbishops are lunatics.

Reading the religious arguments against gay marriage has been entertaining, though. Idiots grasping at straws.

HalfPastWine · 07/03/2012 16:11

Where's the OP gone?

seeker · 07/03/2012 16:38

I said Christians not "some Christians" advisedly because I wasn't talking about individuals. Of course most individual Christians are lovely people- just as most people are lovely. It's once Christianity becomes involved in public life that this need to take precedence over others manifests itself.

I was thinking about starting a poll thread. Something like: Do you think the word 'grotesque' best applies applies to:

A) two adults wishing their loving union to be on exactly the same footing as any other couple or
B) leaders of an organisation with an appalling record on sexual crimes(which we don't need to rehash) railing against such people.

OK. Seeker, you dolt, you should have said 'the Christian Church' not 'Christians' Grin

Grimma Grin at poll question.

YABU

This is not going to be a reasonable debate, this is going to cause friction and bad feeling. Why do you want to start a punch up?

Debsbear · 07/03/2012 16:50

All kids are taught evolution rather than creation in school, so of course they are taught atheism. And not all schools have prayers either.

seeker · 07/03/2012 16:51

See? Challenge the Christian view that their beliefs should take precedence and you're accused of wanting to start a punch up.

HalfPastWine · 07/03/2012 16:51

OhChristFENTON The OP is legendary for starting up this kind of thread. Hence why it hasn't turned nasty already, the regular MNers are onto it !

MamaMary · 07/03/2012 16:51

You didn't really want to know if you were being unreasonable, did you? Hmm

hiddenhome · 07/03/2012 16:52

I hope that all the atheists are aware that criticising Christians just increases our superpowers Grin

LeeCoakley · 07/03/2012 16:52

They are taught Christianity as well but they also have to practise it. It is a requirement of schools in this country to partake in daily worship 'of a broadly christian nature'.

MamaMary · 07/03/2012 16:52

HalfPastWine, never heard of the OP before, but glad others have plenty of cop-on!

LeeCoakley · 07/03/2012 16:54

I've never thought of seeker as a shit-stirrer. Perhaps I'm not on the exciting threads...

GrimmaTheNome · 07/03/2012 16:54

don't be silly. They are being taught 'science'. Not the same thing. You can be a christian and a scientist - most christians in the UK accept evolution is the mechanism by which we got here. HTH.

hiddenhome · 07/03/2012 16:54

Most schools ignore that direction LeeCoakley. ds1's primary school dramatically reduced their religious worship in the years that he was there. It was unnoticeable by the time ds2 started.

Pandemoniaa · 07/03/2012 16:56

Well there's Christians and, er, Christians.

I've absolutely no time for the happy clappy, literal interpreters of the Bible who cannot accept that there's an alternative to their version of salvation. In this category I put the Manic Street Preachers in a nearby seaside town who assured shoppers (and our audience) that our performing group was a coven of "Devil Worshippers" on the grounds that some of us appeared to be wearing Satanic regalia. Not that either they or I would recognise Satanic Regalia even if Old Nick himself came over and adorned me with it.

When approached and questioned (in a friendly manner) about the acceptance of other faiths, their leader confidently announced that "I don't follow a tolerant God. So we're telling everyone you will burn in Hell".

LeeCoakley · 07/03/2012 16:58

Most? How do you know? All the schools I know still insist on putting hands together for a prayer at assembly and chant 'Dear God' and end with 'Amen'. And it is still a requirement AFAIK.

OhChristFENTON · 07/03/2012 16:58

"AIBU to think that ...etc"

See?

You're after a fight debate, to start one about religion is a shitty thing to do IMO.

nickelhasababy · 07/03/2012 17:03

I think atheists re guilty of that.
they've decided there's no god, so they need to convert everyone else to their way of thinking.
