UPDATE on to be pissed off I have been offered a council FLAT instead of a house?

Thought I would update on my previous thread as you were all so sympathetic and concerned for me Grin.

We have taken the flat and will move in tomorrow. We have no choice and will be unable to be put on the transfer list for a year and will then probably have to wait a further 2/3 years for a house to come up.

The flat is on the (top) 2nd floor of a small block. We are 'lucky' in that the block is being upgraded and they have put in new windows/balcony doors/front doors and replaced all the railings around the two balconies. There is one off the kitchen and one off the lounge. The flat is very light and airy (although was stinky) and DH has painted/bleached it to within an inch of it's life and it is now presentable. There was decent laminate floor down already and it has a recently fitted kitchen, new toilet!! and almost new radiators. We did not found any mould/damp at all which we were very impressed by! The DCs rooms are big enough and mine and DH's is much bigger than our current one.

There are 18 flats in the block in all and every 3 flats (Grd/1st/2nd floor) gets to share a reasonable sized gated garden that each overlooks. We all have large sheds as well so the trampoline and bikes can all get stored in there.

The block seems quite quiet. I am a bit meh about it now. I am hoping there will be other DCs in there that mine can play with and I will be quite happy. We have a very large town park/farm/paddling pool area within 10 mins walk. DD's sec school is walking distance and her mates live around the corner.

We have worked out that after paying rent on this, we will have over £2100 a month to live on! That is with just DH working. I can decide if I want to go back to work or not probably after the summer when DC4 is 2.

I have probably been worried for nothing and am looking forward to getting back on track and saving for a new house of our own.

Thanks to the council and all those who sent their good wishes Thanks.

Thank the Lord the trampoline is safe!

Now I can sleep at night

It's just someone come back to update a normal ( non troll ) thread from a few weeks ago!! Why the trolling? Take a look at the guidelines if you think that's what it is, and act accordingly!

Op went through the finances when she got a flaming on the first thread! It was above board.

starsintheireyes · 07/03/2012 19:17

Sounds like things are looking up for you, although you will be reassesed in 2 yrs and probably asked to move out given your income. (thats what happens to all new social housing tenants from now on, doesnt apply to those who were already in social housing)

Still, thats two years to save for a deposit, which with £2100 disposable income, should be a breeze!

bronze · 07/03/2012 20:10

Storm do you have children?

Our income is slightly higher than yours and we receive tax credits we do have have four children though.

HeroFactory · 07/03/2012 20:13

Stars..... No.... Her DH has been working/earning that all along. They were in council temp accomadation and will move to this flat. The Dah has worked all along and council already know the details...... So no, they won't need to move in 2 years....

hatesponge · 07/03/2012 20:29

I suspect this is BS.

However just to play the game, I have what most people consider to be a very good job.

After I've paid my mortgage and childcare, I'm left with less than half the amount the OP has!

There is no way anyone would struggle on £2100 a month after rent...far from it.

Floggingmolly · 07/03/2012 20:45

£2100 net a month? And all the angst about the council failing to find you a house to your exact specifications? You entitled gobshite, you're either a complete fantasist or completely stupid. Or possibly both.

usualsuspect · 07/03/2012 20:47

'entitled gobshite' nice

HeroFactory · 07/03/2012 20:49

flogging what a credit you ate to your family!Hmm

HeroFactory · 07/03/2012 20:49

*are

crazynanna · 07/03/2012 20:52

as opposed to 'unentitled gobshite'

usualsuspect · 07/03/2012 20:54

as opposed to just being a twat

MyLittleMiracle · 07/03/2012 20:56

You should think yourself lucky, the council wouldnt help e despite leaving a abusive relationship, so i found myself somewhere, and i am currently but not for long only on benefits and have absolutely no savings! Its hard when you ave no savings and a lot of people moaned at me about wanting a council place, despite my circumstances.

Cawze · 07/03/2012 21:00

Good for you OP.

So pleased you are entitled to social housing, and will have £2100 left over, plus more if you go back to work.

Can I tell you my story?

We're never going to get on the list as I have a 'decent' paying job Hmm. After paying ct, water, elec and gas, food and the top up on the rent (we are in receipt of housing benefit shock horror)

I have the grand total of zero 2 weeks before pay day.

I literally cannot afford to feed my DD.

I am patching clothes up so I can go to work in one of the most well known employers in this country.

I am stuck in a private rental trap which means we will never get out of it.

I am exhausted mentally by counting each and every penny.

I am so pleased that your shithole turned out to be a palace. Please don't gleefully shout from the hills that you will have over 2 grand after rent. I don't care if you have 4 children, after rent that is a massive amount to live off, especially if you have a low rent.

I wish you well. And I will sit and seethe that I can't do the fucking same.

MyLittleMiracle · 07/03/2012 21:06

I think what bugs me about the OP is that she seems to think a flat is beneath her and seems almost to be moaning. I would have given anything a few weeks ago just to be on the HOUSING LIST But now i have signed a tenancy and i am moving too.

MyLittleMiracle · 07/03/2012 21:09

I do however wish you well, as i know its hard having no where to live. x

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 07/03/2012 21:18

I really don't understand how people who can afford to live in private rental qualify for 'affordable housing' - there are families living in B&B's etc waiting for places?!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 07/03/2012 21:20

MyLittle - Oh there was no 'almost' moaning - it was full on stropping!! I'm glad you have a place sorted now.

MyLittleMiracle · 07/03/2012 21:33

Thank you chippinginneedscoffee, it tooka while, but i got there! Some peope just cant be happy. There are so many homeless famillies out there desperate for somewhere to live, or women getting out of abusive relationships. I was one of them!

Lueji · 07/03/2012 21:54

Northern, LOL.
Literally.
Even the cat looked up.

:o

HeroFactory · 07/03/2012 22:05

Op WAS homeless!!! They are ( currently) in council temporary accommodation.... THAT accommodation is a house the council rent from a company..... The 'company' want it back... Now.... So council had to place them in first available place.... This flat!

The flat came available when previously it had been nicer houses available, which op missed out on by a whisker ( hence her original thread)

storminabuttercup · 07/03/2012 22:09

bronze yes just the one. Luckily I work for a family friendly company (on paper) so do childcare vouchers, we barely afford to live though, I didnt have my ds to claim benefits, I'm just shocked that someone who earns more than us gets cheaper housing when there are so many families out there living in poverty. I don't begrudge anyone what they get, and wish the op best of luck. But I feel sad for others.

We manage, we are warm, we have food too eat and we have each other.

I count my blessings daily.

storminabuttercup · 07/03/2012 22:10

To eat not too! Doh

MyLittleMiracle · 07/03/2012 22:16

I was also homeless, mum said i couldnt stay here and teh council told me it was reasonable for me to return to where i was before and my exH, who was extremely abusive. Yet someone who has got housed is sitting here moaning, surely if you are homeless, then you should be grateful of anything you get?

MamaMaiasaura · 07/03/2012 22:22

Fucking hell! 2100. That's more than we have after paying mortgage and dh is a higher rate tax payer. Then we have council tax etc.

I am walking away from this. No fucking words as we can't afford to consider more dc as can't afford to move etc.
