To not wash dds swimming stuff every week?

It's on for no longer then an hour and always comes home smelling of her shampoo so as far as I'm concerned it's had a good rinse in the shower....

Yet part of me feels it's a little wrong. Am I BU or a lazy cah?

I would wash it properly
It won't last as long if not as the chlorine will rot the fabric. Also never dry them in the sun

I'm really no clean freak but even I think this is ewww

petitema · 06/03/2012 17:43

Thats disguisting.

AnonymousBird · 06/03/2012 17:44

I tend to, but only because the cozzies and towels get pulled off and trodden on into what can be quite a dirty floor some days, so mostly they go in the wash.

However, if we have avoided trampling on them, then I see no reason why they should be washed every time as long as they have a chance to dry properly.

hellhasnofury · 06/03/2012 17:44

DD swims competitively so trains 6 days a week, I've found that both chlorine and washing powder/soap ruin swimsuits so hers are always just rinsed in clean water then hung over the bath to dry.

GrownUpNinjaWarrior · 06/03/2012 17:46

Stick it in a rinse and spin, be good enough for me.

ilovesprouts · 06/03/2012 17:50

my ds2 goes swimming every thurs stuff go in wash every week cant stand the clorine smell.

lemniscate · 06/03/2012 18:05

Gummy - its usually dry and back in the swim bag before another load of washing has gone in, hence why I don't launder it every week.

Glittertwins · 06/03/2012 18:06

The detergents in shampoo and washing liquid will destroy a cossie. They should only ever be rinsed out in cold water. I must have hundreds over the years and have never had health issues from this. Granted they don't last long when used 5 or so times a week.

AllShiney · 06/03/2012 18:10

Thanks for your replies.

It never smells of chlorine so that's why I've been ok about simply hanging it up to dry I guess.

According to DDs teacher they spend forever in the showers so it gets a good rinse :o

AllShiney · 06/03/2012 18:12

Oh and I don't think it will last long enough for the detergent etc to ruin it given the rate at which she's growing!

bigbadbarry · 06/03/2012 18:14

I bung mine in on the rinse cycle so they probably never get actually properly washed

TheresASpareChairOverThere · 06/03/2012 18:15

Health issues from a costume that has been immersed in chlorinated water? Really? Surely the vast amounts of other people's pubes/wee/poo/verrucas/whatever floating in the water and therefore into your mouth and nose is more of a concern than a bit getting dried onto your cossie?

But I now feel I might have to wash it every week anyway sigh

annalovesmrbates · 06/03/2012 18:16

So if you don't wash costumes after each swim, what about towels? I am a washing/cleaning slattern, but the chlorine smell in the used towel is blergh and it goes straight in the wash.

No don't start washing it every week or I'll have to as well!

Stay over here on the dark side. I have cookies!

MaureenMLove · 06/03/2012 18:19

Nope. Don't do the towel either. The smell doesn't bother me, because I don't have to use it! It's his swimming only towel. Used, dried and put straight back in his swim bag.

Just been and checked, as I have towel and shorts on the airer now and neither smell particularly of chlorine. DH on the other hand.... Grin

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 06/03/2012 18:22

YANBU so long as you give it a good rinse before you hang it up. Swimming costumes shouldn't be washed in the washing as it ruins them. They also shouldn't be washed in detergent; just rinsed in plenty of warm water and hung to dry. I used to swim a lot and saw the effect of too much machine washing on lycra...

annalovesmrbates · 06/03/2012 18:23

Hmmmm, a special swim towel that doesn't get washed sounds appealing!

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 06/03/2012 18:23

The towel I would say probably does need washing although I generally take one that's been used a couple of times already in the bathroom so would be wanting a wash soon anyway. They get a lot dirtier in swimming pools than at home.

MaureenMLove · 06/03/2012 18:25

It's the way forward! Grin

There are many, many more household tips I can't share, because I am environmentally savvy a lazy biatch ! Grin

NoMoreRoom · 06/03/2012 18:26

Most swimwear garments come with instructions to rinse in cold water only as the washing powder can wear them out and ruin them.

I do this with both mine and DS' swimwear.

Towels get washed weekly anyway so they just go in with normal towel wash.

MaureenMLove · 06/03/2012 18:27

To be fair, if I had a small child swimming, I'd probably wash the towel, but I can trust DH to use it sensibly and not drag it through the dirty, mucky, hairy water .

It's only ever damp, like it would be when you get out of the bath.

muddymooncups · 06/03/2012 18:30

I wash the DCs swim wear after each time they go swimming.

(I wash in non-bio liquid and hang to dry)

I don't know if it's just DD , as her towel stinks after swimming.Grin

backwardpossom · 06/03/2012 19:05

Just rinse in cold water and hang out to dry. That's what the instructions on the label told me to do. Washing powder causes the material to deteriorate.
