to think the checkout operator shouldn't call me lazy for buying prepared veg?

oldmum42 · 06/03/2012 12:32

I have a large family, so had a big pile of veg for the next 3 or 4 days. peeled, prepared, ready to bung in the oven roasting tatties, prepared fresh wedged tatties, carrots and other "hard" veg ready cubed.

She's raised an eyebrow before, but today she said "Is mummy having a lazy day today then? That must cost you a lot extra" (aimed in the direction of my 16mo in the trolley seat). I replied that it does indeed cost extra, but worth it to me as I have arthritis in my fingers, which shut her up somewhat.

Actually I don't have Arthritis, but I have hypermobile finger joints and peeling/chopping and even writing causes pain for hours if I'm not careful, and I am at high risk of Arthritis when older because of it - so I try limit peeling/chopping.

AIBU to think the checkout operator should not to calling customers lazy or otherwise making comments about a customers shopping................ they are there to sell us stuff, not police what we are buying!

Even if I was just "being lazy", then so what? My money, my business, surely? Fuming slightly about this (and a few other insensitive remarks I've had lately from people who should be paying a bit more attention to customer service).

So why not tell her that? YANBU but sounds like she was clumsily trying to make conversation.

SydSaid · 06/03/2012 12:35

YANBU, and well done on your comeback - she shouldn't make assumptions on people based on appearances. Many problems are hidden from view, and maybe, just maybe, your response will make her think before calling someone else up on their shopping choices.

valiumredhead · 06/03/2012 12:35

Oh! Just re read your post you already did! Grin

Shrug it off - who cares what she thinks?!

Cherriesarelovely · 06/03/2012 12:35

What a rude woman! Yes she was definitely BU!!!!

buttonmoon78 · 06/03/2012 12:36

I too have hypermobile joints and have never linked it with pain when chopping hard veg and peeling spuds in particular. Doh!

I'm with you on the comments though. Not really had it with shopping but I had a checkout operator discuss my bump in my last pg and bellow around the shop that it was breech and I was going to be torn asunder blah blah. Was furious.

And yes. Of course it costs you more. But that's the trade off you're prepared to make. Occasionally I buy ready meals. Yes, I could make it cheaper but then I'd lose all the time I'd save. And that's my choice, being a grown up and all.

She was probably just a little misguided in her conversation, but YANBU.

WorraLiberty · 06/03/2012 12:38

Oh chill out!

It sounds like she was making polite conversation...albeit in a bit of a ham fisted way.

Really nothing that shouldn't have gone in one ear and straight out the other.

CreepyWeeBrackets · 06/03/2012 12:38

YANBU.

Perhaps she sells a lot of this range and has absorbed the advertising message.

Calamityboo · 06/03/2012 12:39

Shock how rude!! she clearly had her extra wide judgy pants on that day. Shrug it off op, at least you are feeding your kids some veggies!

BreconBeBuggered · 06/03/2012 12:43

I'd be hacked off as well if she'd said that to me. The shop sells it, somebody buys it. No need to justify yourself.
On the other hand, I can't imagine having to make conversation with strangers all day long without putting my foot in it somewhere along the line. Let it go.

PurpleRomanesco · 06/03/2012 12:44

I agree with Worra.

It's just checkout banter.

Ephiny · 06/03/2012 12:45

YANBU - how very rude! I would not have liked the weird 'talking to you through your baby' thing either.

I have had weird comments occasionally from checkout operators, I think sometimes they're told they must make conversation with the customers, but some really don't have the social skills to know what appropriate small talk would be!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/03/2012 12:46

I've had that in the past when mine were babies when I had jars of baby food in the trolley - "Oh. My sister just blends up everything they eat for their baby. He just eats the same as them." Inside, I thought "Bully for them. Now shut up and swipe, you nosey cow." Instead I just fumed silently.

Why do these people think that each customer's life runs EXACTLY the same way as their own?

WorraLiberty · 06/03/2012 12:48

I can't imagine having to make conversation with strangers all day long without putting my foot in it somewhere along the line. Let it go

That's exactly it.

Even if I managed a whole day without inadvertently insulting someone, there's no way I'd manage a whole week Grin

MrsBethel · 06/03/2012 12:48

YABU to let that bother you.

Birdsgottafly · 06/03/2012 12:48

She isn't making conversation, she's having a go.

No-one should be calling you lazy to your child, unless it is awellknown family member having a joke.

The blatent sexism would have been enough to piss me off, i would have replied that it gives my DH a day off, as i don't cook.

She could chat about many subjects, negative language and personalchoices shouldn't be commented on.

I get that because i shop for a few elderly people and my DD has hypo-mobility and LD's, but i like her to be involved in cooking, i give a good "shut them up" answer each time.

PandaWatch · 06/03/2012 12:49

CurlyhairedAssassin you should have told her they were for you and that you were following Jennifer Aniston's (alleged) babyfood diet!

Birdsgottafly · 06/03/2012 12:50

See i am so pissed off on your behalf, i have forgot to use my spacebar Grin

WorraLiberty · 06/03/2012 12:51

She did not call the OP lazy

She asked if she was having a lazy day

That's quite, quite different you know.

Everyone has a lazy day now and then.

Haziedoll · 06/03/2012 12:53

I find it really annoying when a checkout person makes a comment about my shopping, even if it's not in a critical manner. Very unprofessional.

Psammead · 06/03/2012 12:57

I would have found it rude, tbh. There are a myriad of reasons why someone might need to cut corners and none of them are her business. I like a chat at the checkout, but I do not want criticism!

bejeezus · 06/03/2012 12:58

what else are they supposed to comment on hazie?!

give the poor women a break

why do you care what she thought anyhoos?

LapsedPacifist · 06/03/2012 13:03

No, that is truly crap customer service. Not just the "lazy day" comments which are completely out of order, but the observation that the products are expensive. Err, shops exist to make a profit. If the customer agrees and rushes off to exchange pre-prepared veg for the "au natural" version then the store will lose money.

There are scores of folk applying for every supermarket job in our city: school-leavers, the semi-retired, unemployed graduates and redundant professionals as well as very experienced retail staff. So there is no excuse for employing people who don't know how to interact with customers.

oldmum42 · 06/03/2012 13:07

ButtonMoon! What an awful comment regarding your pregnancy! How insensitive.

Re your Hypermobile joints, my mum has them too, and has bad arthritis is thumbs and some finger joints, I was advised that the over flexing of the joints causes bleeding in the joint and eventually causes arthritic change, so worth avoiding things that cause joint pain where possible (my thumbs are worst, you can see the bruise develop when I overwork it!).

OP posts:
Haziedoll · 06/03/2012 13:08

What are they supposed to comment on?

The weather, Coronation Street, the Olympics, anything other than my shopping because that's my business and I don't want it commented on.

I avoid one particular check out lady in Tesco for this specific reason.
