to think the checkout operator shouldn't call me lazy for buying prepared veg?

I have a large family, so had a big pile of veg for the next 3 or 4 days. peeled, prepared, ready to bung in the oven roasting tatties, prepared fresh wedged tatties, carrots and other "hard" veg ready cubed.

She's raised an eyebrow before, but today she said "Is mummy having a lazy day today then? That must cost you a lot extra" (aimed in the direction of my 16mo in the trolley seat). I replied that it does indeed cost extra, but worth it to me as I have arthritis in my fingers, which shut her up somewhat.

Actually I don't have Arthritis, but I have hypermobile finger joints and peeling/chopping and even writing causes pain for hours if I'm not careful, and I am at high risk of Arthritis when older because of it - so I try limit peeling/chopping.

AIBU to think the checkout operator should not to calling customers lazy or otherwise making comments about a customers shopping................ they are there to sell us stuff, not police what we are buying!

Even if I was just "being lazy", then so what? My money, my business, surely? Fuming slightly about this (and a few other insensitive remarks I've had lately from people who should be paying a bit more attention to customer service).

Shouldn´t it be up to the customer to chat if they want to?

I don´t want to & would appreciate it if the hint was taken tbh.

IsSamNormansDad · 06/03/2012 13:43

SardineQueen, that's exactly what I do, but the checkout operator in the OP commented on having a 'lazy day' - not especially offensive IMO.

HowAboutAHotCupOfShutTheHellUp · 06/03/2012 13:45

You need to take a chill pill. Give people a break and stop being so professionally outraged. YABU.

diddl · 06/03/2012 13:45

Not offensive to be called lazy/ criticised by a stranger?

I would have been very tempted to just walk away.

bejeezus · 06/03/2012 13:49

you do all know that checkout operators are human, do you?

SunRaysthruClouds · 06/03/2012 13:53

bejeezus Quite.

No, really they are just there to 'sell us stuff' while looking at the floor. Eye contact or talk is strictly forbidden.

I worked in Tesco for a few months and, yes, we were encouraged to chat to customers. However, I didn't much because I am also a customer but not at Tesco and know what it's like to be chatted to while I am trying to concentrate on packing and checking the prices on the customer's display screen. I always wish the checkout operator would shut up. I was so fed up once that I did 'suggest' that she should concentrate on what she was edoing. How can they concentrate on what they are doing (scanning, pressing correct buttons when necessary) if they are looking away and talking all the time?

I think that the most I said was 'would you like help with packing?'

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2012 13:55

But if you do have a chat the queue behind gets all tutty and huffy, like you are time wasting. It's then that they ram your bum with their trolley. Sad

bigbluebus · 06/03/2012 13:56

I honestly prefer the chit-chat of a human check-out operator than those bloody self scanning machines telling me to "put the item in the bag" or "unidentified item in the bagging area". That really does drive me to distraction and I avoid them like the plague. (Guess who still uses a road atlas rather than SatNav?).

Agincourt · 06/03/2012 13:58

I don't think this is a big deal at all

you are feeding your child veg, whether it's peeled all not. Loads of people live off frozen and tinned veg, it's the same isnt it?

I work in a supermarket mind you. I tend upset lots of people for you know, just breathing

BupcakesandCunting · 06/03/2012 13:59

" I was so fed up once that I did 'suggest' that she should concentrate on what she was edoing. How can they concentrate on what they are doing"

Really? That's nice.

RuleBritannia · 06/03/2012 14:02

BupcakesandCunting I am. Really!

how did he/she reply britannia???

oldmum42 · 06/03/2012 14:04

BUTTONMOON, no scoliosis on my spine, but the widows hump, yes! The spine tends to be more S shaped than normal if it is affected by the hypermobility, so difficult to stand straight..... you are right to be careful with the pilates/exercise as easy to cause damage.Things like bikes, rowing machines, cross trainers are great as they control how far the joint bends (this protects the joint), where as dumbells, running, etc can cause more damage!

Also had SPD when preg, did get better very quickly afterwards though.

I think careful care and exercise means it might not get too much worse as we get older (fingers crossed!).

Agincourt · 06/03/2012 14:04

she most probably went a cried in the toilets afterwards

PrincessTamTam · 06/03/2012 14:05

She may have been saying "lazy day" but she was also clearly making a judgement on it, as well as the cost. Really not acceptable, and not her place. Of course it's hard to sit there making polite conversation all day, but if that's your job then you should be aware of when you're likely to offend. The OP was right to call her on it.

I had the same check out girl ask me THREE times if I was pregnant in about 6 weeks - I am what you might call an apple shape! - the third time I told her to be careful as it was easy to offend (the first two times I was so mortified I mumbled that I was just fat!). Nice. Blush

Agincourt · 06/03/2012 14:06

My daughter has hyper mobility and scoliosis too, as an aside, and I think i have it too but it has never been diagnosed. I find peeling painful as well and my knees and ankles will just rotate without any reason to half the time so i have to be pretty careful about stuff.

oldmum42 · 06/03/2012 14:07

HOWABOUTAHOTCUP Grin, I've never been accused of being professionally outraged before!

OP posts:
nickelhasababy · 06/03/2012 14:08

i agree actually - if they're talking, chatting, they can't be concentrating on making sure the prices are correct, and it's also taking my eyes off that.
esp with reduced stuff. i always have to point out if they've not got the correct reduction on.
i don't like chatting with the person on the till usually - i hated it esp when i was increasingly overdue with dd, grumpy and tired, and just wanted to get my stuff and go.
but i hate the self-service more because it's taking away jobs.
and the voice is irritating.

Agincourt - sounds like you may be hypermobile too, with those symptoms - amazing how common it is, when you start talking to people about it!

nickelhasababy · 06/03/2012 14:11

bags of frozen veg are brilliant.
it means you can have veg out of season and still have british, and it's frozen immediately which means it's got more nutrients in it.
you should have judged them
