I first went to Slimming World in 2002.
I lost ten stone in the end. I lost a stone a month for the first seven months.
I started SW in the February of that year.
In early July i was taken to hospital with a suspected heart attack.
It was gallstones.
I was in and out of hospital for the next nine months with constant attacks.
I was prescribed strong drugs like tramodol which didnt even touch the pain.
In the end whenever i had an attack the doctor had to come out and give me a morphine injection.
On Christmas Eve the doc came out and gave me an injection and the next day i couldnt stand up. My legs kept giving way and i passed out three times. I spent Christmas Day 2002 in hospital. When the doc came out i was in so much pain and begging for morphine because of it that he may have mistook me for a drug addict and slightly overdosed me.
I am back at slimming class again now and am still appalled that there seems to be pressure to lose weight fast. You also see the same byline in loads of magazines.
I did find a website at the weekend where a doctor said that you should lose no more than 3.3lbs a week if you want to avoid developing gallstones due to rapid weight loss.

Apocalypse its like that sometimes. Think you are doing great. But i will admit that ten years ago i got obsessed and went completely sin free. It can be hard to find a balance sometimes.

YABU.

Diet clubs like SW promote a healthy lifestyle change. Your level of weight loss per week would depend on your weight to begin with, and losing a stone per month equates to 3 and a half pounds per week, which isn't an excessive amount.

You've admitted yourself that you didn't follow the programme by going completely syn free, hence your weightless was not the result of a healthy change - syns are there to use because you need some balance.

I'd suggest that if you do easily take issue with what another person is saying that you may want to take it up with them.

ilikecandyandrunning · 06/03/2012 06:14

The other member is an idiot! Just ignore her, even better, laugh at her. Why did you go back to slimming world? Did you put the weight back on?

mrspepperpotty · 06/03/2012 06:56

I think the TV programme The Biggest Loser is partly to blame for this. It really annoys me when someone steps on the scales, has lost 2lb and everyone gasps and looks horrified.

2lb in a week IS A GOOD HEALTHY SUSTAINABLE WEIGHT LOSS FFS!!!!

EdithWeston · 06/03/2012 07:07

Here's a list of known at-risk groups for gallstones - rapid weight loss is quite a way down the list. Staying obese/overweight is somewhat riskier.

women?especially women who are pregnant, use hormone replacement therapy, or take birth control pills
people over age 60
American Indians
Mexican Americans
overweight or obese men and women
people who fast or lose a lot of weight quickly
people with a family history of gallstones
people with diabetes
people who take cholesterol-lowering drugs

AlanMoore · 06/03/2012 07:22

YANBU to be frustrated at the way FAST weight loss for aesthetic reasons seems to be prized above sustainable weight loss for health reasons, but not sure if you're not being a tiny bit U about your gallstones, horrible things though I know they are!

A few years ago I went from 10.7 stone to 8.10 stone in about a month due to illness. I had palpitations and hair loss but people still kept banging on about how great I looked Hmm

I've come across a lot of people who've done VLCDs who've had them, not so many who've gone the slimming club route.

I did SW after the birth of my first baby and it was painfully slow! But I am small with 2 stone to lose and once i get below a certain weight it always comes off really slowly.

Lovecat · 06/03/2012 07:44

I did a vlcd a few years ago, lost 3 stone and felt bloody awful, as soon as I eased back into 'real' food, although i didn't put the weight back on it felt like all my reserves had been used up by the diet, it affected my mental health - went to the Drs as I couldn't stop crying for no real reason, turned out I was dangerously low in folic acid and other minerals/iron and had to take mega supplements to get back on an even keel.

I put all but a stone of it back on again over the next 4 years and am now doing things properly and slowly to lose it again.

I agree that the health risks of a vlcd aren't properly advertised, this side of things was pooh-poohed by the diet counsellor, who didn't like anyone talking about any downside (dismissed as negative thinking) in the group.

However I don't think you can blame Slimming World - the group leader isn't promoting this message, the annoying cow who's a member is - tell her to stfu!

CrunchyFrog · 06/03/2012 08:09

I've lost 6 stone in 13 months. I'm currently yo-yoing around 10.5 stone.

It's all settled now, but I had hair loss, feeling freezing all the time, developed Reynauds, my skin is taking a while to catch up, I had very low blood pressure and fainted a lot. I also had to adjust my alcohol intake downwards, am a literal lightweight now!

CrunchyFrog · 06/03/2012 08:11

Oh, I didn't do a club, but I did do a healthy, balanced diet apart from the beer

And positive effects are wonderful, asthma very good, feeling fit and healthy - I wouldn't change it!

I lost the first stone in a week, BTW, it slowed right down after 4 stone.

Shutupanddrive · 06/03/2012 08:52

I used those slimming shakes a while ago (celebrity slim, similar to slim fast) and lost 2 stone quite quickly. Also went to hospital thinking I was having a heart attack, was gallstones! Have now had my gallbladder removed, but will never use those shakes again

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 06/03/2012 09:23

My friend's doing that lipotrim, the fact that she's been constantly on her period since she started it should tell her they aren't good but she's choosin to ignore in.........and the fact it'll probably pile back on when she starts eating normally again.

Kennyp · 06/03/2012 09:26

When my gall bladder came out i was told i was a prime candidate for it, seeing as i was "fair, fat, fertile and fourty". Those were the doctors words. My freddo frog addiction was untamed, i think thats what triggered it off, not any weight loss (i wish)

I've been going to SW for a long time and most members don't lose more than 2lb a week. At the start yes people have big weight losses, and the bigger you are the bigger your losses (initially) and men loss more than females.

But most of the people that go (women aged between 25 - 60) are bloody delighted to lose one or two pounds a week ( i know I am).

My friend when on an extremely low calorie diet - just soups, shakes and a tiny ready meal in the evening. She ended up with virus after virus, plus a painful tooth abscess. I can only assume her immune system was shot to pieces.

Kewcumber · 06/03/2012 11:13

"fair, fat, fertile and fourty" - but thats mostly bollocks - fat yes older yes female yes. Other than that its genetic.

I was dark, not fat, infertile and thirty when I had gallstones!

Kewcumber · 06/03/2012 11:15

Losing weight very fast is a higher risk factor for gallstones that almost any of that list EdithWestern - I can only think it isn't in order of highest risk first.

In the UK all bariatric surgery patients are given drugs to prevent developing gallstones for the first year (or so) after surgery as its so common. ( know someone who had bariatric surgery and gallstones thereafter)

Kewcumber · 06/03/2012 11:20

Just googled it ". Gallstone formation occurred at 6 months in 32% of the [bariatic surgery] patients -Sugerman HJ, Brewer WH, Shiffman ML, et. al"

I'm pretty sure that 32% of pregnant women and mexicans don't develop gallstone in any 6 month period - or even over their lifetime!

ButternutSquish · 06/03/2012 15:41

I've lost 6stone in 13 months and think I now have a completely new attitude to my weight and weightloss. I think most diets fail because you eat things that when you're not on the diet you wouldn't eat, and when you come off the diet you then eat all the things you couldn't eat.

I've been seeing a hypnotherapist who specialises in weight loss and I eat everyday healthy food and eat out once a week on average. I just eat "enough". Enough is when I feel that I eaten enough and that has to be learnt but I have no worries because I feel I can eat like this forever. And I went on two holidays last year where I lost weight, and I lost weight over Christmas.

ButternutSquish · 06/03/2012 15:42

of course I mean that you do eat things on the diet you wouldn't normally eat!
