DD went to a friends for a sleepover last week and ended up with a black eye (accidental, getting over excited and acting daft etc). Anyway saw parent after school today and they lightheartedly said they were sorry about returning DD broken etc. Me being the witty comedian that I am not said 'don't worry about it, we'll get you back next time, hahahaha' then got in the car thinking wtf did I say that for??!!! They probably now think I am some crazed mother on the revenge path for DD, I really should remind myself daily not to try to be funny, it always sounds better in my strange mind

That's funny, I would have laughed.

MateyMooo · 05/03/2012 20:25

i owuld have laughed too... i'm sure the parent did too.

except be very careful if thier DD does have an accident at your house, they'll always be Hmm

WildImaginings · 05/03/2012 20:26

I come out with stuff like this all the time!
Don't worry about it, I'm sure they laughed afterwards! Grin

MrsBeakman · 05/03/2012 20:26

You said hahahaha afterwards, thus signifying it was a joke. I'm sure she took it as the joke it was and found it funny. If you had looked at her with fury in your eyes and hissed those words at her, then yes they would think you were crazed.

shemademedoit · 05/03/2012 20:26
Grin
poorbuthappy · 05/03/2012 20:26

Are you me? I say stuff like that all the time. Grin

ivykaty44 · 05/03/2012 20:27

You where joking, no problem there - unless the other parents hasn't any type of humor they should know it was a joke.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 05/03/2012 20:28

That's fine. The time to panic is when their DD returns from your house with a broken arm! Grin

faeriemoo · 05/03/2012 20:29

PMSL, I would have laughed. Exactly the type of thing I would have said.

oneofthosedays · 05/03/2012 20:36

I have a, erm, weird unique sense of humour and don't really know the parent's sense of humour either, they seem quite easy going though so hopefully I got away with it Grin

McHappyPants2012 · 05/03/2012 20:37

I would of laughed at it

Cherriesarelovely · 05/03/2012 21:43

It was funny OP don't worry. I am just like that, I say the most ridiculous things in jest and then just think "Oh god! Why?"

Proudnscary · 05/03/2012 21:46

That's funny! Don't worry about it!

OlympicEater · 05/03/2012 21:49

Yep I'm another, open mouth, speak, engage brain later thinking "WTF did I say that?"

carabos · 05/03/2012 21:51

DS2 had a very serious accident while at a friend's house a few years back which was caused by another visiting friend, not the host boy. We never heard a word from the parents of the perp, despite having known them for years. In fact never heard from them since that day. Both medics and fully aware of the extent of DS' injuries.

Not funny I'm afraid. Hmm

Poledra · 05/03/2012 21:57

Actually, carabos, not funny in your specific situation. I'm sorry your DS was hurt and that the other parents did not contact you at all following the accident.

But, in this situation, it was a lame joke of the type we all make when we fail to engage our brains before opening our mouths.

OP, you'll be wrapping the other child in cotton wool next time (s)he comes over, won't you? Wink

MaMattoo · 05/03/2012 21:59

I laughed! It's funny Grin worry not.

MrsBeakman · 05/03/2012 23:55

carabos What was the injury? Shock

carabos · 10/03/2012 06:01

mrsbeakman he almost lost an eye. Smashed his cheekbone and eye socket.

Iheartpasties · 10/03/2012 06:38

carabos - did you contact them?

weevilswobble · 10/03/2012 07:17

Always best to even the score at the time. Saves any uneveness.

MsF1t · 10/03/2012 07:34

Glad it's not just me who cringes after making one of my attempted witticisms.

I probably would have said something about 'an eye for an eye' and laughed maniacally, causing the family to flee the country.

carabos: what a terrible story, though clearly not quite the same situation as this one. Is there any way they may not have had the full story? I find it really shocking if they had. My Pa had one eye as the result of a childhood accident, caused by a game going wrong. Actually, I've often wondered that it isn't more common, and I am probably a bit paranoid about my daughter's eyes..!

SilkieChicken · 10/03/2012 13:17

I would have laughed and then not let my child near you ever again.

crashdoll · 10/03/2012 13:22

That's hilarious and clearly a joke. Hopefully the other parent is a sane human being who understands humour.

carabos · 10/03/2012 16:23

iheartpasties no I didn't contact them. Why would I? It would seem a little odd wouldn't it to ring someone up and say please don't worry yourselves, he hasn't actually lost his eye.

They were aware of what happened and as he's a doctor and she's a nurse they will have been fully aware of the potential severity of the injury. I'm not blaming them, it was an accident, but they should have enquired as to the outcome.
