AIBU to be downright p*ssed off at unhealthy parents?

I sent my six year old DD off to school this morning with a packed lunch filled with two ham sandwiches, an apple, yoghurtised fruit pieces and a bottle of orange juice. She came home with the remnants of the apple, an empty packet of space invaders and the wrapper of a chocolate bar. I've spoken to DD about and she says another friend 'gave it to her'. I'm partly annoyed at the dinner ladies for not stopping kids from swapping food at lunch (for allergy reasons, if anything) but also at this kid's parents; if I send my child into school with a healthy lunch, I do not expect her to come home with an unhealthy one. It's not the first time this has happened, I've been through the same thing with my older children and although I've ranted to a couple of people about it, I've come to mumsnet to vent my anger a little further. AIBU or just missing something? Hmm

...and for those comparing a piece of fruit and juice to a chocolate bar wrt sugar - get a grip. They aren't the same at all. Look at the sat fat for a start.

UniS · 05/03/2012 19:50

be pleased the dinner ladies enforce the "take your rubbish home" rule, otherwise you would have no idea what she had eaten or swapped.

Darleneconnor · 05/03/2012 19:51

You are right to be pissed off OP. my DC has had to get a filling because of the bad habits he has got into under the influence of school pals ( before he went to school he'd never heard of coke and thought prunes were sweeties).
Schools should be MUCH stricter about all this IMO.

GrownUpNinjaWarrior · 05/03/2012 19:52

Of course I don't need to balance their diets with crisps (I have a ban on chocolate in packed lunches, including chocolate biscuits) and sweet cakes/muesli bars, but they like them and I let them have them once a day.

Neither of them is overweight and both are relatively healthy for their age. They even eat hummous and veggie sticks, they just also happen to like jammie dodgers and space raiders.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 05/03/2012 19:53

Maybe your daughter was still hungry? On a busy day my 5 year old ds would eat what you gave her plus a couple of bits of cheese/babybel/breadsticks as well. Maybe she needs a bit more protein/carb to fill her up longer and balance all the quick sugar hit from the heavy on the fruit version of her lunchbox.

But no yanbu I would also find it frustrating if you can't keep track of what she is actually eating. Occasional crisps choc won't harm, but I like to know how many treats ds is having so I can judge if he gets more at home or not!

PeanutButterCupCake · 05/03/2012 19:54

YABU nothing to do with you what other patents feed their children.
If your unhappy speak to your child about not swapping food.
Hardly the end of the world tho.

I like lentils. With pita bread. And loads of chilli.

Fleurdebleurgh · 05/03/2012 19:59

Took my Cub Scouts to an event this weekend where they were required to have a packed lunch.

2 of the 10 turned up with 4 chocolate bars and a can of coke/fanta.

Thanks for that parentals!

babyhammock · 05/03/2012 20:01

Did you know that ham (along with other VERY processed meat) is pretty bad for you) ....just sayin Wink

hannahopes · 05/03/2012 20:02

When you put it like that I do sound a little raged, but I try to keep sweets, choc etc for special occasions farther than every day, I'm also worried it might put her off eating her own food, and she'll end up eating a load of junk or whatever.
Also, it may not be my problem what other people are putting in their kids packed lunches- but as BluddyMoFo says, it's surprising any other kids would want to swap chocolate and crisps for fruit and veg, either they are tired of having such choc filled lunches or they really like fruit.
Would quite like to point out DD seems quite happy munching on fruit, and only recently and in school has she been swapping for less healthy things.
RANT OVER, sorry if it's a bore!

I'd find it hard to raise a 'meh' about it myself. YAB distinctly OTT.

Ample · 05/03/2012 20:02

If this was an every day occurance then I would say, yanbu
But once or twice, then yabu

What is your schools policy on packed lunches? How about popping a note in the suggestion box?

At dd's primary, parents are notified and warned if sugary foods are spotted in lunchboxes and you would have been on the list for sending 'orange juice' which is frowned upon here.
Also midday supervisors aka dinnerladies aren't just there to hover and inspect the contents of each and every lunch box.

Lunch is a pretty busy time in the dinner hall, there's a whole lot of other things going on besides eating. Especially for 6 year olds Smile

signet · 05/03/2012 20:03

No chance the dinner ladies are going to notice children swapping food. If you don't want her to swap then it's up to you to tell her, you can't expect the dinner ladies to monitor what every child is doing when there are so few of them and so many children.

GrownUpNinjaWarrior · 05/03/2012 20:03

Would I be better with salami? What's wrong with haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam? Shock

faeriemoo · 05/03/2012 20:04

" I'm also worried it might put her off eating her own food, and she'll end up eating a load of junk or whatever."

Your lunches are putting her off eating her own food - she's swapping them for a load of junk or whatever!

blushingcrow · 05/03/2012 20:05

Mn is so boring ATM

Pornyissue · 05/03/2012 20:05

Perhaps your dc is hinting its time to spice, or should I say, chocolate the lunch box thing up a bit op?

laptopdancer · 05/03/2012 20:06

Yoghurtised fruit pieces may as well be sweets, lets face it

Is it wrong that all I can think after reading the OP is "mmmm space invaders" ?? Are they still 10p?

babyhammock · 05/03/2012 20:10

What's wrong with haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam? because its so processed. Highly processed meats are one of the most unhealthiest things things you can eat...

Pornyissue · 05/03/2012 20:10

Actually I'm also shocked some kid offered to swap chocolate and space invaders

Be proud of your dc negotiating skills! That's some kid.

DilysPrice · 05/03/2012 20:10

Let she who isn't putting known carcinogens in her DC's sandwiches cast the first stone Grin
