15 year old DS has recently gotten very, very heavily into music (as they do). A while ago I told him he could borrow anything he liked from my CD collection, which was met with a rather pitying "yeah, right" kind of look.

Today, he comes home with a list of 10 albums his rock dude mate at school has recommended. I ask what they are and am told "nothing you've ever heard of".

I pick up the list, have a read, walk straight to my CD rack and pick up six of the albums. (Well, one was different album, same group).

HA !!!!!!! Grin

So, AIBU for walking around with a knowing smirk on my face?

(Disclaimer: I do realise that anyone who describes themselves as "cool", "hip" and "with-it" is generally nothing of the kind, and needs to get themselves back to the 80s).

msbossy

just had a look at Hold On on You Tube. Still makes me go goose-pimply. That record got me through home sickness at University

CrockoDuck · 05/03/2012 18:42

UPDATE:

Himself has just gone through my CDs and helped himself to Snow Patrol, Prodigy, Blur, Razor Light, Chemical Brothers, Oasis, The Verve etc. etc.

Now there's big gaps in my CD rack - told him he needs to get me some Barry Manilow & Cliff Richard for mother's day Grin

DD (16) and DS (15) voluntarily came to a gig with me and had a great time AND told all their friends on FB.

StateofConfusion · 05/03/2012 18:44

I am so cool then as we have the entire set of red hot chili peppers albums, most of nirvana, and atleast one of the others, oh 3 or 4 green day.

But then my dcs are under 5 and say I'm cool, so I must be.

I did get an nod of aproval from a 13yo at my cousins party because ds was wearing an acdc tshirt and dd sang along to them when they came on tv.

HandMadeTail · 05/03/2012 18:52

I am Australian and "we" never say gotten.

Moveslikejagger · 05/03/2012 18:56

Yeah well I requested James Galway's album 'Sounds of Gold' (or something) for my birthday when I was about 10. How d'ya like them apples then eh?!

ReindeerBollocks · 05/03/2012 19:06

I have all of those (including the Linkin Park CD) however I'm currently getting my kids into Fleetwood Mac which lets the side down apparently.

DH also thinks my musical tastes are childish because it contains stuff like alien ant farm. Compared to his Phil Collins I don't think I'm doing too badly

Ilovedaintynuts · 05/03/2012 19:14

I have a 15 year old DS and I am always shocking him with my music knowledge. Last year he was listening to his iPod and I asked him what he was listening to. Eminem he says smirking. "you wouldn't like it" " lots of swearing" cue more smirking.
I then proceeded to sing/rap all the words to 'without me'.
Cue open mouth.
I've probably ruined Eminem forever now Grin

RuleBritannia · 05/03/2012 19:23

Oh dear. My records are by people like Lonnie Donegan, The Shadows, Kenny Ball, Acker Bilk, Temperance Seven, Bert Weedon. I even have a Jonny Dankworth and the Blue Grass Boys. Oh and the Dallas Boys. Oh and Adam Faith and Billy Fury. You can't beat them. My school friend's favourite was Lance Fortune. He had one record reach number 2.

I love Teen Beat by Sandy Nelson. Google it and listen. You can't stop moving.

Boomerwang · 05/03/2012 19:28

RuleBritannia of all those you listed, I've only vaguely heard of Billy Fury and none of the others at all!!

RuleBritannia · 05/03/2012 20:02

Boomerwang I didn't think anyone would. But you must have heard of The Shadows and John Dankworth.

StellaAndFries · 05/03/2012 20:07

RuleBritannia, my dp loves a bit of Lonnie Grin I'm rather partial to a bit of Billy Fury and The Shadows too. I love music that makes me involuntarily foot tap :)

CrockoDuck · 05/03/2012 20:10

@RuleBritannia - Stranger on the Shore is one of my fave tunes EVER. Listen to it on YouTube all the time.

Oh and in case anyone's interested - stuff I didn't have: Paramore (sp?), Muse, Cage The Elephant (wtf?), Metallica, Foo Fighters & Rise Against (?) Only some of these I've actually heard of.

Where's me jumper?

I'm sure I had it on, when I had my tea...

bejeezus · 05/03/2012 20:50

Genius!

HappyHippyChick · 05/03/2012 20:54

Ooh I also have Metallica and muse and Foo Fighters. Took my ds's to see Green Day in 2010 (aged 6 & 7) and to Hard Rock Calling last year to see The Killers and Kaisers [cool mum emoticon].

Do I lose cool points for having been to see Fleetwood Mac twice?

Jellykat · 05/03/2012 20:57

Oooo I have 4 from your previous list, plus Muse, and nearly all of the Foos albums. No Metallica here but will Led Zepp suffice?
Cage the elephant aren't bad.. and i presume the last one is Rage against the machine?
Can i recommend The Black keys, and Black rebel motorcycle club to your DS if he is into the above?

HappyHippy Fleetwood Mac are cool too, they're classic! Grin

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 05/03/2012 20:58

I can name nearly all the Marvel characters, make brilliant train tracks, sing the spiderman song, allow him to wear any costume he likes any time we go out, and change a Transformer in less than a minute! Wink

My 5yo thinks I'm very cool!! Grin

exexpat · 05/03/2012 21:02

My would-be music journalist nephew (17, blogs and reviews gigs for music websites) recently came back from fossicking around in a second-hand music shop with a clutch of CDs and I think was rather startled when I said, Oh yes, I remember that one, it was one of the big hits when I was DJing occasionally in 1989. I don't think elderly (40-something) aunts are meant to say that kind of thing.

DS (13) has also been surprised at the anount of 'cool' stuff he has found on our iTunes library. I do sometimes worry that DS is going to feel the need to find some other way of rebelling because at the moment we have very similar tastes in music and he is very happy to go to gigs and festivals with me. Should I start collecting Take That albums just to give him a more normal childhood?

RuleBritannia · 05/03/2012 21:07

exexpat No. Get him something by Matt Munro or Il Divo or Val Doonican or Rolf Harris or Andy Williams (or Engelbert Humperdinck) - proper singers who don't have to strain to get their notes out.

Jellykat · 05/03/2012 21:16

exexpat I reckon suggesting he watches Englebert doing Eurovision with you should rebalance the situation Smile

DamnBamboo · 05/03/2012 21:20

My husband is so uncool but has a massively cool CD collection. I expect my sons will want to borrow them, I hope so, I can't wait!

bringbacksideburns · 05/03/2012 21:22

I wonder if my kids will think i'm cool in a few years?

Somehow i doubt it, they already say "Will you turn that weird music down?!" Granted it is Janis Joplin or Jethro Tull, which isn't down with the kids of 11.

I remember my parents had the James Last Orchestra Hmm which was chronic. I babysitted for a neighbour when i was 14 and she had White light white heat by the Velvet Underground. I'd never heard of them, i thought she was seriously cool.

Tryharder · 05/03/2012 21:50

Well I am so cool and down with the kids that I am taking DS1 (7) to see JLS next month. Hang on....
