AIBU to think supermarket charity collectors should be banned

I was in tesco yesterday, feeling ill, getting a BIG shop for my family of 4 boys (dh included) and my mind was occupied (lots going on and racing to another kids party deadline ) as I pushed the heavy trolley of groceries from the till through the usually busy part between when you checkout and leave the building. Some magnificent trolley manouvering is usually required.
I spotted an old bloke sitting at the side, holding a charity bucket unenthusiastically. As I passed, he muttered something about whatever charity it was. I passed by with a quick, sorry. I am a card only gal.

Then, he said quite clearly.."yeah, thanks for nothing". I was a bit shocked.
I really dont think people should be accosted by charity collectors, big issue sellers, electric and gas or phone companies or rac at the supermarket.

AIBU in just wanting to be left alone to shop.?

YABU to think they should all be banned on the basis of one rude man.

What should be banned the back packers at the end of the checkouts who hold you to ransom whether they pack your stuff (badly) or not.

IsSamNormansDad · 04/03/2012 09:13

YANBU! Complain to Tesco! Do you have the name of the charity he was collecting for? Complain to them too, charity collectors (I think) are only allowed to ask for a donation once and not harass, intimidate or otherwise comment if you choose not to donate.
The collector was a rude rude man and I'm sure the charity would like to know (even if he is a volunteer, still doesn't give him the right to speak like that). Tesco will take it seriously or at least they should!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 04/03/2012 09:17

YABU to think all charity collectors should be banned, it is a great way to collect money for charities as a lot of people still have loose change in their pockets.
Most are also happy with a "Sorry, not today" type response if you don't want to or can't donate.

However, this man was rude and you should complain to the supermarket or the charity.

fedupofnamechanging · 04/03/2012 09:26

YANBU - people should be able to go about their business without being accosted for money all the time or getting a guilt trip because they choose not to give to charity while trying to shop.

I don't have a problem with someone holding a tin, but I do not think they should be allowed to rattle it under your nose and ask for money - it is so rude and likely to be met with a rude response from me.

hurricanewyn · 04/03/2012 10:35

I don't mind the charity collectors generally -I think you were just unlucky op with the man you came across - as most of them will accept a polite "not today"

I do get the rage however with the people trying to persuade me to change my gas, electric or sign up for the store's own credit card. I pay enough for food in the supermarket without being harassed Angry

IDontDoIroning · 04/03/2012 10:44

I've done bag packing at supermarkets for the dc sports teams etc, ime they have rules that you must be polite to customers and no bucket rattling etc.
I know my self how much of a pain it is if you are in a hurry or dont have change. And i respect anyone who says no, its their choice.
I'm sure if you were to mention it to the supermarket, the organisation he was collecting for would take notice.

Mrsjay · 04/03/2012 10:46

YAbu to think they should be Banned YANBU to be peeved at the rude old man but maybe you sounded a bit snooty didnt you have a pound to stick in his bucket ? charities are just that charities doing good for others not al charities get big lotto grants or whatever so they need to sit at tesco doors ,

randommoment · 04/03/2012 10:46

Back in the days when I still had time to volunteer to help with collections we were taught not to hassle people for money as it was against the terms of our license from the council, and to keep on smiling and be polite. So this git was breaking the rules. But one git isn't enough of a reason to stop it entirely, although if you have the energy you should let the store/charity know, the charity doesn't need its reputation being damaged by gits and the store will feel the same.

It does irritate me that they clog up the entrance when it is already difficult enough with people faffing about with their wonky wheeled trolleys without having to negotiate around people shaking a collection box under your nose, but it is less than ten seconds of your day to get past them... hardly worth complaining about.

Trills · 04/03/2012 10:48

YABU to think they should be banned just because one was rude to you.

I agree with shinyrobot - get it delivered.

TidyDancer · 04/03/2012 11:00

YABU to think they should all be banned based on this alone.

Definitely agree with others, the bag packers at the end of the checkout should be blanket banned. Hate this. I wouldn't mind so much if the checkout operator asked 'would you like your bags packed by x-charity?', but my experience of this is that whoever it is packing just grabs your shopping while asking, like they just expect you to say yes.

They should be barred from doing that and asked to collect only as charity collectors normally would.

McHappyPants2012 · 04/03/2012 11:18

i haven't seen bag packers for a while, but i tell them to leave it as i bring my own bags and don't want to pay 5p per bag because they never pack the shopping right.

Pornyissue · 04/03/2012 11:21

At least your one didn't offer to Impregnate you

LilacWaltz · 04/03/2012 11:23

It's the 'collecting for children with cancer' which confuses me!

Is there one individual charity for this? Or is it actually. 'cancer research' who then lump all the money together?

MrsPotter · 04/03/2012 11:23

Ooh the bag packers on the checkout wind me up, was asked once by young lads doing it as they started picking it up without getting an answer, cue my short response : PUT. IT. DOWN. I put some money in their bucket as I would anyway but I really don't like people packing my bags for me because they do it wrong even DP

ravenAK · 04/03/2012 11:28

Ah well, if it was Tesco they were probably having a whip round to pay for gruel for their workfarers.

I'd complain about the rude bloke.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 04/03/2012 11:31

I should think the poor bloke was absolutely fed-up and disillusioned! They're not allowed to rattle buckets/tins, not supposed to talk to you unless you speak first, etc. etc. How soul destroying to sit in a foyer and watch people with huge trollies of food who will not spare 50p. They need a medal, not complaints!

TheMonster · 04/03/2012 11:33

I hate the bag packers. I don't want a random teenager packing my tampons with my frozen food.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 04/03/2012 11:34

YABU. Rudeness should be banned, not charity collections.

Synyster · 04/03/2012 11:38

yabu
he was rude, but no doubt he had had to put up with rudeness, unlike the charity muggers, he will be doing this for nothing

Pornyissue · 04/03/2012 11:45

I prefer it in waitrose where you just put one of those green plastic coins into a box.

WorraLiberty · 04/03/2012 11:49

I'm struggling to believe the man actually said "yeah, thanks for nothing"

But even if he did, you weren't accosted by him.

So YABU to want them banned just because of this one man.

As a general rule, when they are on supermarket property they're not even supposed to rattle their tins so you would have been better off reporting him to the Manager.

heronsfly · 04/03/2012 11:53

YANBU,
Im fed up with them too, I got caught outside morrisons the other day, i got a pound out to donate, and was informed they cant take cash,i was then hassled all the way to the car about setting up a dd for the charity, and it was a very well known charity !

TheMonster · 04/03/2012 11:57

Herons, chuggers really piss me off.
