A friend told me about a woman she knows who has 3 year old twins and a 2 year old. Her husband works away for long periods of time. She doesn't cook while he's away - the children eat freezer food like fish fingers, chicken nuggets etc and she has ready meals. When he's home he cooks, but when he's away they just eat things from the oven for convenience.

I can't begin to imagine what life is like with 3 under 3 but surely preparing fresh food at least occasionally is important for nutrition and learning about food? I find it really odd and a bit sad.

I really fancy fish fingers now

motherinferior · 04/03/2012 13:08

I do worry about nuggets, because they are usually made from the kind of chicken that has been intensively reared which I personally think is a Bad Thing for many different reasons.

Mind you, I don't read with my children either now they have attained perfectly good literacy and can leave me to finish my own book in peace.

noddyholder · 04/03/2012 13:10

chicken nuggets are revolting. I don't think much about how others feed their children but do think its odd that this woman suddenly cooks when her dh is home,I think I would be the other way round and make sure the dc got teh best food and dh could eat whatever

Hecubasdaughter · 04/03/2012 13:14

lotney most of the flaming in the second half of the thread isn't aimed at you especially as you admitted you were being unreasonable.

JasperJohns · 04/03/2012 13:16

I have a friend whose eldest would only eat potato waffles for the first 10 or so years of his life. He eats a sightly more varied diet now - still entirely crap.

He is now a strapping 13 year old who excels at both sport and academic subjects.

RedHotPokers · 04/03/2012 13:16

I very rarely serve 'freezer' food .
I cook a variation of 'sausages and {random vegetable that DD won't eat but it makes me feel better for serving it}' for more or less every meal.

Oh yeah, and then there's DS, who wont eat cooked meals, and lives on sandwiches.

BUT the sausages are not frozen, and neither are the sandwiches

Deadsouls · 04/03/2012 13:18

Nothing wrong with a fishfinger now and then...my sil said one of her DCs, when they were little would only eat grapes and ham...for a year!! Sorry OP, but IMO you are being a teensy bit judgemental

Mrsjay · 04/03/2012 13:20

you can have real chicken nuggets if you look Mine dont eat them anymore to big , I did see the reconsituted shite on a tv programme once It is vile

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 04/03/2012 13:24

I only shop once a week so we have fresh veg for the first few days then frozen at the end of the week. I do not understand why feeding kids fish fingers is considered a bad thing, it was the only way I could get mine to eat fish!

TheBigJessie · 04/03/2012 13:25

noddyholder when the husband's home, he cooks. Presumably while she's looking after the children.

noddyholder · 04/03/2012 13:28

Sorry misread it! I think eating frozen crap is ok once in a while but you do have to acknowledge it is garbage and balance it with a healthy diet the rest of the time. I would probably judge someone if they fed their kids like this all teh time but I wouldn't lose sleep over it

Witchofthenorth · 04/03/2012 13:33

I feed my kids like that all the time, so I shall put myself out there to be judged :)

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 04/03/2012 13:43

noddyholder (love the name) why do you say frozen food is all crap? Do you not mean convenience food?

noddyholder · 04/03/2012 13:45

I don't I said frozen crap not all of it! I love peas Smile.

noddyholder · 04/03/2012 13:45

I think all the convenience stuff is super expensive too

TheBigJessie · 04/03/2012 13:46

P.S.: No more flaming Lotney. 'Kay? She's gracious and clarifies herself. She's nice.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 04/03/2012 13:47

Sorry Noddy I see what mean now. I also love frozen peas and sprouts!!

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 04/03/2012 13:48

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 04/03/2012 14:14
