OK, Herta frankfurters, not the best food to give kids but mine love them. £1.79 usually, on offer for a few weeks at £1.60, this week .....£2.88????
Is there a world trotter shortage?

I loathe Tesco

ShatnersBassoon · 01/03/2012 10:47

Prices often go up inexplicably to allow a 'promotion' to be legally classed as a promotion. I bet the trotter sticks will be on offer again shortly, and they can be sold for 'half price' for £1.40 or whatever.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 01/03/2012 10:47

I hate the way tesco do this! I do an online shop with them, so it is very obvious when they suddenly hike prices Angry I refuse to buy things when they go up that much, and shop for those things elsewhere. Do they hinestly thik we are too dumb to notice?

ShowOfHands · 01/03/2012 10:49

I am not Tesco, I am less morally corrupt but I can explain it if you like?

They're a business. Or a bunch of money making bastards if you prefer.

It's a very common tactic. Put things on offer for a while then hoik up the price. They do it with Pringles a lot. I don't buy Pringles. I have no vested interest in them. But I do notice they range in price from about 99p to £2.50 dependent upon what 'offer' or price rise phase they're in.

I need a hobby.

Oh yes, Pringles is an excellent example. They're currently more than £2 a tube in Morrisons, but I know they'll be running a 'half price' promotion before long and I'll bulk buy them then.

woollyideas · 01/03/2012 10:50

I hate Tesco and everything it stands for. They are opportunistic fuckers.

SwivellingDicksTidyWife · 01/03/2012 10:51

I need a hobby too. A few weeks back I came home from Sainsbo's and said to DH - Gu puddings were £3.59 for two - they must be going on offer soon because who would actually pay that, they must think we are stupid.

A week later - Gu puddings now on offer at £2 for two. What.A.Surprise.

WowOoo · 01/03/2012 10:53

Most people don't notice - that's why they get away with it.
All the supermarkets do it.

On a happier note, my local Morrisons made a mistake with their pitta bread labels. Special offer 6p for 8. It was a mistake. They only let me buy 6 packs. I love a bargain!

Scholes34 · 01/03/2012 10:58

I think Tescos, and Sainsbury's et al, don't realise that some of us notice the prices of items that are not on offer, as well as those that are. Sainsbury's packs of five large cookies from the bakery fluctuated between 80p and 88p for some unknown reason and have now settled at £1. £1.79 to £2.88 is a bit of a hike. They're probably wanting you to buy their own brand instead.

Scholes34 · 01/03/2012 10:58

WowOoo - what do you like most, a bargain or pitta bread?

formerdiva · 01/03/2012 11:04

I work with the major grocers, and I'd summarise them as:

Tesco - despicable. Screw their suppliers and the customers, low specification own label products, exist purely for the share holders.
Asda - not great quality spec for their own label as it's all about lowest price. Screw the suppliers but are actually passionate about their customers. Don't tend to do hi-lo pricing, so a good place to shop for brands or if price is more important to you than quality.
Sainsburys - do hi-lo pricing but not as shamelessly as Tesco. Very good quality own label (especially the basics range). Not too bad to their suppliers, either.
Morrisons - my personal fave. A little bit of hi-lo (and getting worse for it) but generally speaking good value for money and good quality products. Very good to their suppliers.
Waitrose - if you don't mind the prices, definitely shop here. Great quality, lovely company, respect both their suppliers and their customers. They charge more, but pay their suppliers more too.

In my humble opinion : )

WowOoo · 01/03/2012 11:28

I think I love the bargain more than the pitta bread Scholes!

FormerDiva - completely agree with your supermarket summary there.
I go to Morrisons but to others to stock up on offers. e.g Sainsbo's for nappies. And I hate Tescos.... And I wish I could afford to do regular big shops at Waitrose..

Eddings · 01/03/2012 11:38

I noticed in Tesco's a couple of weeks ago that they hiked up the price of their coffee by 50p so up to £1.76 (bought it as it is still so much cheaper than the branded product I used to buy) yesterday I went in & there is a big price drop label & it now costs £1.40 but I'm supposed to feel I have got a bargin... lucky ole me Wink

rara67 · 01/03/2012 13:09

Thanks ladies, glad it's not just me! Off to see if the Pringles stash from Christmas is still in the eaves or whether Mistress Mouse has eaten them all. Tried to ring Tesco but very busy, at least 3 mins wait in a queue. Own brand trotter sticks not as nice and also very expensive. It's now cheaper to buy mince at our local butcher. I do have a life but feeding my family is one of my top priorities. Have a sunny afternoon x

LadySybilDeChocolate · 01/03/2012 13:11

They will reduce the price in a few weeks and claim they are on special offer. Hmm

sausagesandmarmelade · 01/03/2012 13:41

I love Herta sausages too....in soups and things!

Ridiculous price hike.
DH and I used to do all our big shops at Tesco...but got frustrated with the car parking, the quality change of the 'finest' orange juice and having to hunt for the most basic things...to find they were out of stock.

So we now go to Sainsbury's. Much better!

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 01/03/2012 13:56

Oh yes I got totally fed up with tesco pricing too. The post Xmas price drop thing finally killed it for me, they put all the prices up for a bit, then launched the "price drop" by putting the prices back down to what they were before! I decided I was sick of being treated like an idiot. Also noticed quality of fresh fruit and veg was getting really poor, going off really quickly, damaged etc.

Now do standard weekly shop online from asda with mid week top ups from the little m&s food store, a little pricey but worth it for nice fresh fruit n veg.

AngryFeet · 01/03/2012 13:58

Yes what is it with bloody pringles? I can rarely find the ready salted ones anywhere and when I do they are £2.50. Madness.

sausagesandmarmelade · 01/03/2012 13:58

and I hated it when you thought you had an offer...such as on Jam...to get to the till and find that it only applied to a certain flavour....or if you spend a certain amount. The details are often in the teensiest writing!

sausagesandmarmelade · 01/03/2012 14:00

Oh yes...don't get me started on the quality of the fruit and veg!

More than a few times we would get home to find that potatoes (in a bag) were bruised and inedible...or that apples were bruised/mouldy or both!

and we wouldn't go back..because it meant a trek in the car and possibly having to queue up etc. Infuriating!

startwig1982 · 01/03/2012 14:02

I hate Tesco Angry

BlackLetterDay · 01/03/2012 14:04

I really noticed this on the last tesco shop I did, I buy quite a few basics items and the price has really rocketed, used to be 12 basics toilet rolls for £1.15, now £1.40 for 4 Hmm.

Might try ASDA again, even though their delivery service is less than great.

startwig1982 · 01/03/2012 14:04

I love Morrisons, which is handy seeing it's the only supermarket in town. We're getting a waitrose though, it's being built for opening the end of March! Grin

sausagesandmarmelade · 01/03/2012 14:08

A waitrose! How posh! (mind you they do lovely food...a great selection too).
