OK, Herta frankfurters, not the best food to give kids but mine love them. £1.79 usually, on offer for a few weeks at £1.60, this week .....£2.88????
Is there a world trotter shortage?

Aldi, Lidl, Home Bargains and Farm Foods.

I don't care that every time I go in there I feel like a slice of bacon at a Bar Mitzvah*, they are absolutely brilliant value for money and quality.

At one point H.B had Reeses Nutrageous Bars out at 29p per bar. I bought two whole boxes and gave one to my mother for Christmas. She's never been happier!

*I'm always glared at and met with mutterings. I've never met most of the people there so I have no idea why I'm stared down!

MrsChemist · 03/03/2012 19:21

I've completely sodded off Tesco now. I've got a big Tesco, Asda and Morrison's and an Aldi within a two mile radius of my house, so I can be choosy.
They'll need to seriously up their game if they want my custom.

Although " not being a bunch of shits" would be hard for them to change.

alldaysleeper · 03/03/2012 19:45

To be honest they all do it to some extent, be it Tesco or even the sainted Waitrose. Though for anyone doing big shops for families Asda or Morrisons are best value though always worth bulk buying anywhere if you need it and the price is good enough. On the subject of fruit & veg having worked in the trade most of the quality issues are caused by the conditions and handling "back of house" by badly trained or simply non caring staff. Much of the stock is kept in warehouse chillers for long periods where the temps are simply too low for them. Waitrose best on fresh produce purely because they actually care about getting it right. End of the day food prices are rocketing & we just have to be a bit more canny. If you're lucky enough shop at your high street butcher or greengrocer instead of putting them out of business, you might be surprised by their prices if you're prepared to shop with the seasons.

bochead · 03/03/2012 20:08

Sainsburys online once every 8 weeks for the store cupboard basics range & cos they do the best dairy free range.

Asda cos I like their fish range once every 8 weeks to alternate with sainsburys. They also do good school uniform and household bits and bobs.

Lidls once a week for top ups, and fresh stuff cos it's closer than Aldi's & I like their mozzarella, greek youghurt, cheap fruit & veg, washing up liquid and laundry detergent cat food, frozen veg and gammon.

Aldis every so often when I visit my Mum to ring the changes.

Every 2 months Holland and Barratt for nuts & the like as they have a special offer roughly that often.

Tescos? never. The quality of their own brand stuff is awful & I loathe every aspect of their business practices and the fact that nothing is ever in the same location twice or correctly priced.

tinkertitonk · 03/03/2012 20:50

Tesco is wonderful. I am a major shareholder and would recommend them to anyone wanting to make serious money.

NanBullen · 03/03/2012 21:15

I just shopped in aldi for the first time today. i was getting so annoyed with tescos, such a lot of money for not very much food.

i spent £90 and got loads, including a lot of "picky" stuff like crisps and sweets. i sat down with the aldi receipt when i got home and put everything i had bought into the tesco website sad bastard on a like for like basis. I saved £40! i'm definitely going to keep shopping at aldi. except for nappies, wasn't brave enough to try those!

we haven't tried the chicken i bought yet, will be having it tomorrow so hopefully won't be disappointed. oh and aldi's version of pringles are 85p Grin

StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2012 21:21

Well that says it all!

MrsChemist · 03/03/2012 22:01

Nan, the nappies are ace.

NanBullen · 03/03/2012 22:18

I think i'll try the nappies next time i'm shopping MrsChemist. couldn't find any wipes, although the telco value ones are cheap and do the job Smile

Passing Sainsbury on the way to my brothers tonight and I sent Ds in to get a bottle of value tomato sauce. Two weeks ago, it was 21p and a penny cheaper than Tesco. Ds went in with 40p and came out empty handed; it has gone up to 49p ~ in two weeks!

Solo · 04/03/2012 01:57

Haven't bought them for a long time, but I found Aldi wipes over perfumed, but that was my only critism. I prefer Tesco/Sainsbo/Asda own brand. Poundland are doing branded wipes too.

valiumredhead · 04/03/2012 11:18

When I went on Friday, Just Right cereal was £1.54 instead of £3.14 - HOW can the price change so dramatically? If they can sell it for half the price they should keep it at half the price - it's ridiculous! < I stocked up! Wink>

^Every little costs more: Tesco's price rises exceeded cuts in last six weeks, magazine claims

A report by trade magazine The Grocer claims that for every two items that have come down in price, three have gone up in the last six weeks^

I also hate tesco. At my local one I am sure they deliberately put the wrong products behind the wrong labels so you think you've got a multibuy when it fact you'll end up paying full price for all the items. I have noticed this several times, and each time I point it out to an assistant the act al surprised but never change it. Angry

TrollopDollop · 04/03/2012 14:50

Whispers - surely waitrose doesn't do this?- runs away screaming

ILoveDinosaurs · 04/03/2012 14:57

Got to ask how much of this is a cultural thing now though.

We went general shopping yesterday and nothing was on sale. So we didn't even bother looking. It got me thinking about how we'd got so much into the habit of needing to find a bargin and thinking that anything that is full priced is over priced in the first place.

I honestly can't remember the last time I bought full price clothing. Its become part of the thrill as much as the purchase. With that mentality, its inevitable that supermarkets are going to tap into the bargin thing.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 04/03/2012 15:00

Just read whole thread and realised the labelling thing has already been mentioned Blush. But shocking that they are doing it everywhere...

pumpkinsweetie · 04/03/2012 15:01

They have even put the value wrapping foil from
48p to 90p so how they can claim the prices have gone DOWN is beyond me !!
And the whole chickens cost more per weight than they did end of last year! The only reason i shop there is because its situated close to me and i have no car

RuleBritannia · 04/03/2012 15:10

realhousewifeofdevoncounty If you query the lack of multibuy facility at the checkout, why don't you refuse to buy the item or just have one of the items? If we all did that, the checkouts would be so piled up with not-taken goods that they might revise their pracices!

MollieO · 04/03/2012 15:12

I use Ocado. If the sub part of a multibuy I reject the sub and the original product. Gets a bit tedious when it is things like yoghurts and the poor delivery man has to wait whilst I sort them out and hand them back but I wouldn't have bought them at all if they weren't on offer.

I find online shopping good for budgeting. If I go to a supermarket I always wander out with a load of stuff I don't need.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 04/03/2012 15:39

Rule Britannia - yes I agree entirely. I think they just bank on people who are doing a big shop in a rush won't notice. I personally would never do a big shop in tesco because of the price, only ever get odd bits there as it is on way home - and am extra vigilant of checking labels as they are such rip-off merchants.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 04/03/2012 15:41

Oh and I have always queried it in the aisles before getting to check out. The member of staff still has never attempted to move items/labels that are in the wrong place.
