To use a subbed...

I have a special event coming up. I'm pasty white and look like death warmed up!

Would IBU to have a few sessions on the sunbed to make myself feel better and get a bit of a glow?

Or AIBU and putting myself at risk and thus selfish and not thinking of DC's?.

I just can't decide?

Spray tan and spell checker?

rubyslippers · 28/02/2012 19:20

Have a spray tan

Much better for you and cheaper than a series of sun bed sessions I would have thought

BrownBoobBear · 28/02/2012 19:20

I know! Bleeding predictive text on iPad!

YWBU. THey are dangerous and unnecessary in my opinion. If you don't want to be so white, have a spray tan or use a home tan (permanent or wash off).

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 28/02/2012 19:25

Depends on the type of skin you have. Do you burn easily in the natural sun?

I ocassionally use sunbeds, but I can't get so much as a hint of colour in England, no matter how sunny it is. My skin rarely burns even on holiday. But if you are the type to get red shoulders because of a single sunny afternoon in July, then stay away.

BrownBoobBear · 28/02/2012 19:30

I tan easily in the sun, but can burn if I stay too long. I think I'll go with the spray tan, much safer, but I do find it a bit messy. I also had a bad 'tangoed' experience, I'm happy not to repeat!!

Can't you dress to suit your skin tone?
Nothing wrong with 'white and pasty'. Its the english rose look.

It can be much more attractive than the orange look. Novel idea I know.

BrownBoobBear · 28/02/2012 19:35

Oh I know I can and I normally do dress to suit. Just feeling down in the dumps, tired, worn out etc... Thought a small glow might help. Never used a sunbed before. I have friends that don't think twice about a few sessions..

I think its a 75% increase in the risk of melanoma, from even a single exposure before the age of 25.

Up to you if you like those kinds of odds Hmm

AprilSkies · 28/02/2012 19:44

Spray tan is better. I used to use them over 15 years ago I went on one in the summer and it gave me discolouration on my face which is only fading now. They can be lethal things...

AprilSkies · 28/02/2012 19:46

If you've never used one before, they won't let you use it for very long and it will take more than one to get a colour. Wouldn't bother, spray tans are brilliant nowadays.

AprilSkies · 28/02/2012 19:46

Best to get the salon to exfoliate you though to get the best result.

t0lk13n · 28/02/2012 19:47

Make sure you have a skin test with a spraytan...I wasn`t offered one and had a nasty allergic reaction a fortnight ago!

BettyPerske · 28/02/2012 19:50

If you knew someone who had died of melanoma you wouldn't.

It's vicious.

I think how it's dangerous is that is magnifies the amount of radiation you get ofthe sort that doesn't burn you, but does increase your risk of mutation in the cells it affects. It's not the burning type of UV that causes melanoma, I don't think - it's the one that makes you tan. Or something like that...anyone good on this?

anyway it's a stupid thing to do and they ought to be banned.

MrsEricBana · 28/02/2012 19:52

No way, definitely don't. Spray tan or no tan!

What Betty said.

Trust me. You don't want to take your chances with melanoma.

BrownBoobBear · 28/02/2012 19:54

Thanks for all the comments. I will get a professional spray tan. Though hate the thought of getting my bits out to be sprayed :-) you are all right, they're dangerous. I suppose I just needed reminding. Thanks!

I'm glad you took that decision. :)

PoultryInMotion · 28/02/2012 20:07

Make sure you have the spray tan a couple of days before the event!

< unfortunate orange experience that turned beautiful brown once back at work >

Aribura · 28/02/2012 20:48

Or just look beautiful how you naturally are.

Imagine if someone wanted to lighten their skin on here - oh no hun, you are gorgeous! No, dark is beautiful! Pale, though? Yeah, death warmed up, need to change it.

Tiresome.

DinahMoHum · 28/02/2012 20:50

its neither reasonable or unreasonable. its just a sunbed. Go on one if you want. Dont if you dont want

BettyPerske · 28/02/2012 20:54

I haven't worried about looking tanned since I was about 13. I wish I hadn't sunbathed then tbh.

I mean all the hassle just to fake something you don't naturally have...I dunno. I guess I wear a bit of powder blusher most days so I don't look half dead. That's faking it too. But you can have a pale body and still look beautiful.

Bingdweller · 28/02/2012 21:14

Please, please don't use a sunbed. Get your spray tan as planned..... I was treated for a stage 2 malignant melanoma in Dec/Jan and I can assure you it was not pleasant. Have never used a sunbed ever and have always been careful in the sun- just unlucky!

I will be seen every 3 months for 5 years and have a 4" scar and massive tissue loss on my upper arm. I'm 34 with 2 DC under 4. Please don't risk your health for a tan. X

BettyPerske · 28/02/2012 21:56

Good luck Bing xxx hope that's the last you ever see of it.
