I'm sort of glad that my two have grown out of having stories read to them, for just this reason. So many required iron force of will to get to the end!
And yes, Puff the Magic Dragon still gets me every time, even just thinking about it Sad

Bambi. Just can't go there. Will not watch it with or without DCs.

When Charlotte the spider dies .

Apparently, when the author EB White made a recording of the story for radio, he had to do many, many takes before he could read the part about Charlotte's death without breaking down.

Also, Kensuke's Kingdom. Had me and DS weeping when the boy and the old man part at the end of the book.

The Little Matchgirl ( is that the right name?). I rem reading it when I was small, and crying. Some things don't change, still cry at it.

lurkingaround · 27/02/2012 22:22

Charlotte's web!! Another I can't read. Except alone.

lurkingaround · 27/02/2012 22:28

Here's The Happy Prince, just to, y'know, share the love, and remind everyone why it makes me cry. Some light bedtime reading for you.

Wheels

The young boy knows his single-parent mum can't afford to buy him the new bike he desperately wants for his birthday, so he puts on a brave face and is grateful for the toys she's managed to buy. Then his big brother produces a go-cart he's made for him in the shed, and he's over the moon. "never in his wildest dreams did he think he'd get a go-cart". I'm crying just typing it!

I bought my DH 'My Dad' by Anthony Browne from DD when she was a baby on Father's day. He's recently read it at his own dad's funeral. 'My dad isn't scared of anything, not even the big bad wolf'. It's about everyone's dad isn't it? My DH, my own late dad and my lovely FIL.
