WrigglyWorm · 26/02/2012 21:58

I. just. can't. take. any. more.

I am not usually an anal uptight spelling Nazi but I cannot handle another facebook status or MN comment that confuses YOUR and YOU'RE.

WIBU to type: IDIOT.

every time I see a transgression?? Or would that get you're goat? Your right, it's rude.

That's not spelling though. That's grammar.

The difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit.

we were talking about this at work the other day and everyone thought I was potty and it's not worth getting wound up about

but it is!!!!!

so no YANBU
but you might not have many friends left, is that a chance you're willing to take?

LaBoccaDellaVerita · 26/02/2012 22:02

Can't stand it either. It's a real offence to mine eyes. Apparently it's not good form to point these things out but sometimes I just can't help it!

MajorBumsore · 26/02/2012 22:02

Took a photo in Tesco the other week of a sign apologising for any 'inconvenients'. FFS!! I am still debating whether to post it to head office.

AgentZigzag · 26/02/2012 22:04

Your being unreasonable.

WrigglyWorm · 26/02/2012 22:04

I know I am being an arse, but it does annoy me. Don't get me started on apostrophes...

Marshy · 26/02/2012 22:05

Excessive use of full stops.......just saying Wink

Just leave Facebook, problem solved, sanity restored.

Sidge · 26/02/2012 22:14

I have a friend on FB who labels pics of her son 'Are little man'.

She's lovely and her son is gorgeous but that makes me clench.

WorraLiberty · 26/02/2012 22:15

I wouldn't call anyone an idiot over not being able to spell or recognise the difference between certain words.

It takes more than dodgy spelling to make someone an idiot imo.

However, I do know what you mean.

It annoys me when I keep seeing people mix 'advise' and 'advice' up...and 'loose' with 'lose'.

But really it's not a big deal.

neveradullmomentinparadise · 26/02/2012 22:16

...And I thought it was just me. I just can't bare it ;)

JerichoStarQuilt · 26/02/2012 22:18

There's a good facebook picture going round at the moment:

Grammar: the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit.

Find it and link to it.

But yes, first, do learn the difference between spelling and grammar.

Whatmeworry · 26/02/2012 22:20

It's an Internet Law that anyone complaining of others' spelling or grammar will make a spelling or grammatical error next.

WrigglyWorm · 26/02/2012 22:23

Oh I have a friend on Facebook who does that too Sidge 'are son asleep' etc CRINGE.

You know EndoplasmicReticulum I was going to call this thread WIBU to just point out bad spelling AND GRAMMAR but then realised my grammar would have to be perfect... and it most certainly is not. So I am a hypocrite. An angry grammar hypocrite. Hey ho! Grin

Your right (joke) leaving Facebook and MN would solve this issue - but I love both so I am just going to have to suck it up.

Maybe IDIOT is too strong - was trying to be funny. How about a link to a helpful Wikipedia entry that explains the difference instead?? NO. Still rude.

Your not beaing unreesunaubble op

you're writing is reely gud xx

Marshy · 26/02/2012 22:24

Trouble is, it will go floating over the heads of those who don't know the difference, and possibly make you look a bit of a know-all. I blame the teachers (runs for hard hat :o)

JasperJohns · 26/02/2012 22:26

Several of my FB friends are serial offenders.

In RL, they don't look or speak like the basics of grammar have them flummoxed, but blimey, they really have.

I wince and twitch over every of that should be have and your that should be you're etc etc.

I judge them, I do.

startail · 26/02/2012 22:27

Oh please I'm dyslexic and using an iPod.
I can't spell to save my life.
I do know most of the less pedantic grammar rules, but errors do slip through.
Especially to and too, seems very easy to bugger up on a touch screenBlush

EndoplasmicReticulum · 26/02/2012 22:31

Don't blame the teachers Marshy, I am one.

It doesn't bother me on Facebook really, not as much as the Daily Mail Statuses or people falling for ridiculous hoax chain posts that they can't be bothered to check out before sending on.

It does annoy me when I see mistakes from people who should know better - like letters home from school. Boy 1 had a mistake in one of his spellings to learn this week.

I'm not perfect though. Practise practice is my weak spot.

hmc · 26/02/2012 22:34

I find it very hard to contain my temper when I read posts like yours - they make me feel fucking murderous actually. My dd is dyslexic, her general cognitive ability is on the 91st centile (so chances are she is brighter then you) but her spelling in on the 18th. Her spelling is awful - and although she might develop strategies and make improvements over time it will never be top notch and I can well imagine her making errors like this in future. However she is not the stupid one

Bossybritches22 · 26/02/2012 22:37

Majorbumsore Please write a letter to Head Office, you know you want to!

'Tis your civic duty

Grin
Flisspaps · 26/02/2012 22:39

The use of 'Nazi' in relation to subjects such as this gets on my tits nearly as much as incorrect spelling.

JerichoStarQuilt · 26/02/2012 22:40

hmc - please don't feel bad - and I'm sorry if my silly post on this thread offended you too. I'm another dyslexic, and I would much rather be dyslexic than not - thinking outside the box, all the useful skills you build up because you see the world a bit differently - it's good in the end.

Your DD is not stupid, you are right, and I'm sorry to have joked about a serious subject.*

  • I have to admit I am also a little bit pleased I am finally someone who gets the your/you're joke because trust me, ti took years, so maybe I get a little bit of allowance on the grounds of gallows humour.
