I. just. can't. take. any. more.

I am not usually an anal uptight spelling Nazi but I cannot handle another facebook status or MN comment that confuses YOUR and YOU'RE.

WIBU to type: IDIOT.

every time I see a transgression?? Or would that get you're goat? Your right, it's rude.

Do it. They will thank you.

Which reminds me: time for a will/shall thread, methinks.

Hebiegebies · 26/02/2012 22:44

I'm sure others will have posted the same as me, but I'm too angry to read
I have struggled with spelling all my life, not diagnosed with anything as the county I grew up in didn't believe in labels in the 70s
My parents had to give me extra help and in the end sent me to boarding school so that my English did not hold me back. I now have 13 o levels, an a level, a diploma and a 2:1 BA
I still struggle to spell and hate having my problems pointed out to me
I KNOW that without spell check I'm useless, please don't rub it in

I have other gifts and talents, please don't bully me about my problem and I'll try not to bully those who can't add up or understand science

Rant over

I am sorry for being a humourless old cow Jericho - it's just that I see assumptions being made about poor spelling all the time and I worry for dd's future....(and so get a bit red mist and unreasonable about this)

NorthRonaldsay · 26/02/2012 22:45

HMC, the argument that because some people are dyslexic, none of us should worry about spelling and grammar is like saying that because some people have ASD, no-one should use non-verbal communication, or because some people (me) have joint problems, no-one should care about sport. Spelling and grammar matter because they're what make language work, and those who can't use them are impaired as writers. Some impaired writers are dyslexic and some are badly educated, or stupid. Some are two or three of these things.

hmc · 26/02/2012 22:48

I don't believe I suggested that correct spelling is unimportant???? I simply pointed out that is wrong to label someone as an 'idiot' for spelling / grammatical errors

JerichoStarQuilt · 26/02/2012 22:48

No, you weren't being humourless hmc.

It is upsetting when it gets you down, I know. I can get that red mist too (especially when it's my little brother who's being criticized for his spelling).

Hebiegebies · 26/02/2012 22:49

North, it's like saying that, even though you have joint problems you should be perfect at every sport, that however hard you try, it wont be trying hard enough, that even thugh you have joint problems you should still win ever race and that because you have joint problems you are thick and will never amount to anything

JerichoStarQuilt · 26/02/2012 22:51

Increasingly few writers are really seriously held back by poor SPAG, though.

It is mostly just snobbery to insist on correct spelling and grammar IMO, unless you are in a job (like copy editing) where it is crucial. If you're a writer - journalist, novelist, etc. etc. - you could have shite SPAG and still be successful.

hmc · 26/02/2012 22:51

Jericho - thank you Smile

JerichoStarQuilt · 26/02/2012 22:53

Thank you for not getting furious and for explaining with such eloquence, hmc. Put me to shame.

inatrance · 26/02/2012 23:27

I think YABU. Some people (ok a lot of people) just can't spell, including a family member of mine who was called 'stupid' and 'an idiot' at school, and she still bears the emotional scars. If you posted that on her status, I would likely have to kill you.

So, don't be mean, just because you find it easy, it doesn't mean everyone does.

McHappyPants2012 · 26/02/2012 23:46

yabu.

Some people find spelling and grammer difficult, they should be able to come onto MN without being called names because of one thing they can not do well.

OP would it be right if someone called you an idiot or stupid because you could not fit a spare wheel on a car, or unable to put up a shed or even fit a carpet.

people have there strengths and weakness, it don't mean because someone can not spell or use a comma in the right place stupid, thick or an idiot

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 26/02/2012 23:50

Well, frankly, someone who can't put something in the correct topic is an idiot.
