she wouldnt give me a MAP, because I'd already had one this month. now I'd done some research before hand, and know that although its not reccomended to take it twice ing the same month, threres nothing stopping me from doing so.

she was funny about the fact that I had had bleeding today, she told me very patronisingly that If i was having my period then I couldnt be pregnant, never mind the fact that my so called 'period' is early and a lot lighter than usual...

she told me to 'wait and see'

AIBU to think that I could have just had the friggin MAP and then 'waited to see...?'

Go to a different pharmacist.

But more importantly, stop having unprotected sex and sort yourself out.

ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 26/02/2012 05:03

I'm working on it, im taking the pill again, but cant eremember if that covers you from the first day of your period (the day I started taking it) or do your still have to wait 7 days.l...

so I might be covered anyway, but thought I could get the MAP just in case... am I wrong?

You can have the MAP in the same cycle, so you are not BU.

To be fair on the "offending" pharmacist, it depends on the circumstances you were gonna be supplied it (bought by you or free under an NHS scheme) There are certain circumstances where we aren't allowed to supply it but this varies depending on which Primary Care Trust we operate under, I'm a pharmacist by the way....

"Friggin" MAPs are Emergency Contraception and are not 100% effective (as you will know from your research).

I would agree with TG... and/or stick to friggin....or as JK says, Put Something On The End Of It.

troisgarcons · 26/02/2012 05:10

I hope you're with someone you know well because otherwise you are opening yourself up (no pun) to STDs etc. Even if you are on the pill you should still use a condom.

saladcreamwitheverything · 26/02/2012 05:11

X-post.. If you start your pill on the same day as your bleed then you are
"covered"....although this is still not 100%...nothing is, unless you are abstinent!!!

troisgarcons · 26/02/2012 05:14

A wild suggestion - read the leaflet!

saladcreamwitheverything · 26/02/2012 05:14

If your period is lighter then you need to be POAS anyway....

ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 26/02/2012 05:17

troisgarcons, I know him well enough to trust him not to have anything, but will get a check just to be 100% sure

salad, thank you for your comment, it was more how she spoke to me than her advice tbh, as if I was stupid (which I know I probably was to need it in the first place...) but surely its not her job to judge? when she first came over to me she opened with 'so someone was unlucky then...?' which I thought was a bit off from the start.

OP posts:
ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 26/02/2012 05:19

my period was meant to be due on 1st or round about, so Im going to test then just to make sure.

OP posts:
saladcreamwitheverything · 26/02/2012 05:25

Tbf that does sound off if she said that, you're right it's not her place to judge, especially with that comment. I only say that if they walk towards me like John Wayne [joke disclaimer] Grin

So, seriously, have you POAS to make sure you're not already preggers? (she should have asked this)

flyingspaghettimonster · 26/02/2012 05:31

Morning after pill failed for me... leading to a very much unwanted abortion that has affected me emotionally ever since. Please do not use it as your main protection. We had a condom burst and felt sure the MAP would guarantee safety. It was a huge shock....

ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 26/02/2012 05:38

salad is it not a bit early to POAS? I thought it was so was going to wait a week, but would it show by now? had the first lot of unprotected sex on the 16th, which I afterward worked out would have been the day or round about teh day that I ovulated....

OP posts:
ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 26/02/2012 05:40

tbh I felt like she just wanted to get home, because it was a pharmacy that is across the road from where I live, so I saw that within 5 minutes the place was closed... I dont think she wanted the hassle tbh.

so do you think I should go into a bigger pharmacy like a boots or something where its more routine, and get it? or will I either be covered by the bleeding or already pregnant?

Back in "the olden days" (my day in other words) a person was advised to use another form of BC for an entire month the first month after starting the BC pill. Doesn't anyone use condoms and contraceptive foam any more?

saladcreamwitheverything · 26/02/2012 06:01

As a rule if your last period is lighter than normal for you then do a test, this is to discount any unprotected sex or "accidents" hasn't resulted in pregnancy from a previous cycle. If you mean you DTD on 16th feb then yes it would probably be too early to tell. If you've had MAP already this cycle though that in itself can cause an early period...this is why it's not recommended as a regular contraceptive as it can make your cycle irregular...

iscream · 26/02/2012 06:04

I am not sure OP,but I know I'd try and get it somewhere if you are within the 72 hours still. If it is no danger to your health to do so?

ThatsEnough · 26/02/2012 06:42

I do agree that the Pharmacist you spoke sounds quite rude and should at the very least have signposted you to someone that could help you - and not suggest you wait and see!

However, it is not reconnened that you take the MAP more than once per cycle and technically the pharmacist was right not to sell it - info below from the Levonelle website -

How often can I take Levonelle® One Step?
There is no medical reason to limit the number of times you use Levonelle® One Step, but you should not take it more than once within one menstrual cycle. Although there is no evidence of long-term ill effects on your health from taking Levonelle® One Step more than once, it is not recommended as a regular method of contraception.
Levonelle® One Step is designed for emergency use and is not as effective as long-term contraception. Levonelle® One Step does not prevent pregnancy in every woman. Levonelle® One Step may disrupt the regularity of your period that month. Your period may come earlier than usual or come later. As your period is your main way of knowing whether you are pregnant or not, you would increase your level of uncertainty if you used Levonelle® One Step regularly.
If you are sexually active (even very infrequently) then the best way to take care of your emotional wellbeing and your reproductive system, is to see your healthcare professional or family planning clinic to find a method of contraception that suits you.

If you were accessing a free service then it depends how the PGD has been written.

Like I said, she has offered a poor service by not signposting you - it might be worth giving the out of hours doctors a ring or going to you local walk in centre (if you have one).

Floggingmolly · 26/02/2012 10:35

Why are you using the MAP as contraception?

SquidgyBiscuits · 26/02/2012 10:40

If she spoke to you as if you were stupid, then frankly it was well founded.

MAP twice in a month does make you stupid.

edam · 26/02/2012 10:45

'Wait and see' is shocking advice from a pharmacist. Go somewhere else, today. You have been a bit daft but it is not her job to judge or to leave you without proper healthcare.

SardineQueen · 26/02/2012 10:50

WTF is contraceptive foam? Sounds like fun!

OP go to another chemist.

Wait and see is a ludicrous thing to tell someone who clearly does not want to be pregnant. How would that conversation go. I waited and saw, and I'm pregnant. Now what, pharmacist?

MsWeatherwax · 26/02/2012 10:55

Wow, lot of judgement in this thread, I'm sure the OP is already aware the situation's not ideal for her and doesn't enjoy having to keep going to pharmacists especially when they are so rude!

OP, the combined pill is effective from day 1 of your period if you start taking it then or after 7 days if it's not the first day of your period. The MAP can mess with your bleeding and make you uncertain when your period is so the pharmacist should have known that bleeding after taking it once might not be your period at all. You can test for pregnancy from about 2 weeks after the incident of unprotected sex, but since you are on the pill it sounds to me like you are having protected sex in any case. You may find your bleeding is irregular and that you have more side effects because of the extra hormones that you've taken, so don't worry if you don't have the withdrawal bleed on the pill.

MsWeatherwax · 26/02/2012 10:56

Oh, just seen your second post. If you have been taking the pill for more than 7 days/since day one of your last period (not this current round of bleeding as it may not be your period) then you are protected and don't need to put yourself through the MAP again.

M0naLisa · 26/02/2012 11:10

Well when i started the pill last august i was told for 14 days just to be sure and safe use a condom aswell.

You are very very very stupid for needing the MAP twice in ONE MONTH

i felt ashamed going to the Drs twice in ONE YEAR asking for it.

Ephiny · 26/02/2012 11:26

I would see another pharmacist (or GP), if nothing else you'll at least get a second opinion on whether you need/should have the MAP.

They will be able to give you advice about contraception as well to help you avoid this situation in the future (though how to take the normal contraceptive pill should be explained in the leaflet -and the person who prescribed it for you should have explained as well).

Generally though, if you're in doubt about whether you're protected or not, it's best to use a condom just in case! Better than relying on the MAP, which isn't really meant to be used routinely like that.
