to not really get beauty treatments?

Was out with some old uni friends last night, we catch up maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I'm feeling a bit flat today mainly because of the way the conversations went. One of our group has had botox. She's a good looking woman, in her early 40s and tbh I couldn't really see a difference but then I've always thought she looked good for her age. Anyway, as the night went on lots of stuff was talked about in regards to looks, weight, diets, fitness etc and I just found it pretty tedious. We used to discuss loads of interesting stuff but now it seems that all they care about is their looks and clothes. I'm 36 and the group ranges from 35 to 43. At one point I actually felt like I was being mocked because I admitted to not knowing about HD Brows (?) Am I a freak or are women in my age group becoming overly vain? It's really depressing me.
ps what ARE HD Brows so I'm prepared for next time Wink.

I would feel exactly the same op. Luckily my friends aren't like this. I have no idea what HD Brows are.

WorraLiberty · 25/02/2012 17:05

You've simply outgrown them and have nothing in common with them now, that's all.

Google HD brows....I haven't a clue.

troisgarcons · 25/02/2012 17:07

They are big ugly ones

Shallishanti · 25/02/2012 17:08

YANBU
When people start going on like this I treat it as an obscure hobby they have and take an interest, but from the outside. Couldn't do it for a whole evening though

EmmaBemma · 25/02/2012 17:09

"high definition" brows? Maybe they've got more pixels in them than normal brows or something.

I don't do beauty treatments but I do get them - I can see where they fit in our world. Women are judged by appearance, both by other women and men, much more than men are. I can see why women going through their thirties and into their forties, dismayed by inevitable march of time, might try to hold back the tide a little. Not that I will, I'm going Full Wrinkle.

Laquitar · 25/02/2012 17:12

I'm too tight to spend money on salon treatments but i don't find it 'depressing' that others do.
The ones i know who spend money on botox etc they don't talk about it. I wouldn't mind if they did.

What i don't like is going to a Restaurant or dinner party and listening about diets.

HardCheese · 25/02/2012 17:16

OP, I agree with Worra - you've grown out of these people, and it's making you feel a bit sad. Having said that, I entirely see why you've grown out of them, because they sound one-dimensional and dull as ditchwater.

MegIet · 25/02/2012 17:16

Just had to google HD brows. They look like joke eyebrows Confused.

Katie Price and Coleen Rooney have them. Not sure I'd count it as a beauty treatment TBH.

upahill · 25/02/2012 17:17

I think it is fine if you want to be high maintence in grooming terms
I think it is fine if you don't want to be.
I'm somewhere in between.
I have hd brows. It's a combination of waxing, threading and tweezing to get your brows in a certain style. It takes about 40 mins once every 6 weeks.

My grooming routine has slackened but this is it

once every 3 months approx new make up (have a lesson at Bobby Brown in Manchester)

Once every 2 to 3 months eye lash perm - people scoff on Mn for this but it makes my lashes really open out and I get mates rates and a good nattter with my friend.

Every 6 weeks hair and roots done, hd brows, eyelash tint.

About once a month manicure, pedicure, hard skin on feet sorted, waxing, legs, bikini and underarms

once every 3 weeks spray tan

once a fortnight threading on lip and chin.
weekly exfoliate

It sounds a lot if you don't normally do this but I have been doing most of this for nearly 30 years so it is just routine and not a big deal.
I have some come to my house to do most of this so it is at a time to suit me and like I said I'm on mates rates or even swopping favours for each other (I'll drive to Manchester for example instead of giving petrol money I'll get an eye lash tint)

Maybe vain. Frankly I don't care. I have plenty going on in my life (see my thread in chat about what I can do tomorrow) These are some of the things that I do.

emsyj · 25/02/2012 17:17

"What i don't like is going to a Restaurant or dinner party and listening about diets."

Yes I'm with you!!!! I only go out to dinner with greedy people now, as otherwise I end up going home hungry and miserable from trying to conform ("ooooh I couldn't possibly manage a starter, the portions in here are massive" followed by main course arriving and being two tiny potatoes, 3 green beans and a child-size piece of fish etc)

I only know one person who's had botox but I could talk about make-up all night... Blush

whiskyfudge · 25/02/2012 17:18

OK, just googled HD Brows. Nice if you want to look like Frank Sidebottom maybe.
For me it's not about tightness or what they do with their money, it just feels a bit sad that this group of women who were once (to me) really interesting people have now descended into a bunch of overly vain (approaching) middle age female stereotypes.
I think worra is right, maybe just outgrown them but it feels so sad and depressing.

Admittedly some of the HD brows on celebraties look a joke.
I have to say I don't look startled or over exgarrated!!

JasperJohns · 25/02/2012 17:21

HD brows are those slug like features beloved by some celebs.

We had someone doing it at a school pamper night. Those that had (foolishly) booked a session were walking around looking like Groucho Marx and unwittingly giving everyone else a good laugh.

upahill · 25/02/2012 17:21

......and I would be bored riged if people talked about diets and treatments all night!!

That would send me in to a coma.
I do what I like in terms of treatments and I have a friend who just says she looks like Crystal Tips and does bugger all. I have friends that have botox not for me but hey!

Who really cares what other people do? I don't.

HardCheese · 25/02/2012 17:22

Groom or don't groom as is your right, but surely no one could labour under the delusion that this is an interesting enough topic of conversation to dominate an entire evening with old friends who don't see each other very often?

Other people's grooming regimes are as uninteresting as other people's dreams.

upahill · 25/02/2012 17:25

Other people's grooming regimes are as uninteresting as other people's dreams........... and other people's baby photos!!!!

(joke... sort of..)

whiskyfudge · 25/02/2012 17:51

and other people's baby photos!!!!
(joke... sort of..)

I hear you on this, but I think baby photos would have been a welcome distraction for me last night! Sad

'i only go out to dinner with greedy people now'

We should go out together emsy

upahill · 25/02/2012 17:58

ps what ARE HD Brows so I'm prepared for next time

I wouldn't let there be a next time if they are that boring tbh!!

I would say 5 min max talk on beauty when you first me....'Hi, look at you!!, Your hair is gorgeous, I'm well jel..' or something similar. That is more than enough !!

Laquitar · 25/02/2012 18:01

upahill does the perm lash last 3 months? And your spray tan 3 weeks?
I thought you need to do it weekly.

(Sorry for the not interesting question)

emsyj · 25/02/2012 18:13

As long as you can manage a starter, mains, side orders of breads & chips (or fried courgette....), dessert and a whole bottle of wine each I am there Laquitar!

I can do lash perming and lash & brow tinting if anyone on the Wirral wants it! I would say a lash perm lasts about 2 months.

upahill · 25/02/2012 18:19

No the spray tan doesn't last 3 weeks. Usually best part of a week. I don't need to have it done more than that. It's just that I have a few lovely dresses from Coast, Nicole Fahri and Karen Millan in cream and pale colours that are really gorgeous but if I just had plucked chicken legs they look not so great on me.

The spray tan makes a world of difference. If I'm just in Levi's or what ever I don't bother so much.

WRT the eyelash perm with me it has faded by the three months and definatly due to be redone. They don't look so bad because of the tints.

Laquitar · 25/02/2012 18:24

Oh i see. I thought there is a new magic spray tan that lasts 3 weeks and i got excited!

emsy, that's nothing. Grin I can manage it.

upahill · 25/02/2012 18:25

.....Also I tend to have it done every three months because that's seems to be a natural patten of my holidays!!

I'm getting them permed on Saturday (begining of March, then going on holiday that afternoon, getting them done beginning of June , then holiday and so on!!!) Grin
