I know this is dull dull dull but hey ho.

My 2 dc have been ill since the week before christmas, tag-teaming with tonsilitis, conjunctivitus, colds etc. I've had a cold for 2 weeks now with a horrible cough that keeps me up most of the night in between seeing to ds who is currently the Ill One. I'm 2 weeks away from an elcs, if I have one with a cough like this, it'll split me open (well, that's how it feels). I've not slept properly for weeks and just want one night. DH is in a right mood but he'd be the one getting up to see to whoever needs it.
I know it says to ask pharmacist's advice if pg but I'm not heading out now to ask them. What do you lot reckon?

Ring a pharmacist

I've always done this and they're normally very helpful on the phone

Just Google one that's likely to be open (probably Lloyds)

dukeofpork · 24/02/2012 18:47

Yabvu. Don't be so selfish. The advice in on the bottle for a reason. Try yoga.

Chulita · 24/02/2012 18:48

Hadn't thought of that tbh Blush though they'll most likely say I shouldn't and I should simply accept that I will die of exhaustion.

Chulita · 24/02/2012 18:49

What's yoga going to do?

Sorry but YABU. Night nurse is not recommended in pregnancy. Paracetamol, Simple Linctus, Olbas oil and warm drinks will be fine.

Unfortunately not even Night Nurse will cure a cold, but with two weeks to go you will hopefully be on the mend before then.

The only thing to consider is if you have a bacterial infection which needs antibiotics (especially as you've now had it for two weeks), it might be worth popping in to the Docs next week if you're not feeling better.

Good luck with the ELCS!

KatAndKit · 24/02/2012 18:49

Dr Google says you shouldn't have it. Due to the decongestant stuff in it. So this is probably what the pharmacist would tell you if you asked.
Take a couple of paracetamol and do the honey and hot water thing.

I doubt it would do any harm if you took the night nurse though. Otherwise it would say definitely do not take it. It's probably the same as other drugs - they can't test it on unborn babies!

jendot · 24/02/2012 18:50

I took night nurse while preg... but of course you should ask advice first!

I went with the if it said DON'T take while preg I didn't. If it said ask first I just took it.

Only you can make that decision though!! The right thing to do is seek medical advice.

WorraLiberty · 24/02/2012 18:50

I don't know what they'll say to be honest

Perhaps they'll ask you some questions about your general health...you know like do you suffer from asthma/aneamia etc..?

Probably standard stuff.

Chulita · 24/02/2012 18:51

I know night nurse won't cure it, but I remember in the dim and distant past pre-dd it helped me sleep better and sleep helps cure all sorts of stuff which was the main thinking behind it. I've been doing paracetamol and honey/lemon/glycerin to with no effect other than nauseating indigestion.

OP posts:
Gigondas · 24/02/2012 18:52

Probably not - the extra stuff that knocks you out in night nurse pretty powerful and I would cautious as I know certain things late on can cause issues with baby lung development.

I would be inclined to take paracetamol and a small drink if it would help you sleep.

dukeofpork · 24/02/2012 18:53

I think it's downward dog (yoga position) that's good to get rid of a cold but a quick google of yoga for colds will tell you more than I can. It might help you sleep too - it really helps me (when I can be arsed to to it that is!). Hope you feel better soon and good luck for the cs and new baby Smile.

This is the Safefetus advice for the antihistamine in night nurse, I personally wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Paracetemol and Hot Ribena for me.

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 24/02/2012 18:54

I wouldn't personally. Can dh give you the weekend in bed?

WorraLiberty · 24/02/2012 18:55

Well it's getting on for 7pm OP so I'd ring now if I were you or you might not find one open.

Iggly · 24/02/2012 18:56

Would you have a small glass of wine to help you sleep instead? Some people think wine is ok in small amounts when pregnant (I don't like any at all though). Rather that than a drug which is probably not recommended.

If you wouldn't have the wine however then stay away from the night nurse. Seems hypocritical to me.

Chulita · 24/02/2012 18:56

Alright, thank you for the luck :) I know I'll get over it, just in the 38-weeks-and-exhausted-before-the-baby's-even-here-stage.
I will leave the nectar night nurse where it is.

OP posts:
Chulita · 24/02/2012 18:58

iggly indigestion is a shocker at the mo, I think wine would keep me up all night!

worra I'm on hold to one now.

ThatsEnough · 24/02/2012 18:59

The sedating anti-histamine is probably the biggest problem -

The use of sedating antihistamines in the latter part of the third trimester may cause adverse effects in neonates such as irritability, paradoxical excitability, and tremor.

In addition the manufacturer doesn't recommend the use of the cough suppressant or decongestant.

Excitable and irritable newborns? heavens no!

On a tangent now but....

It must be strange for a baby all snuggled in the womb of someone with a violent cough?

I don't know why I've never thought of this til now Grin

Hope you're better soon....and good luck with the birth.

Iggly · 24/02/2012 19:02

Is it just the cough stopping you sleep? I find a real good clean of bedroom, including wet wiping the bed stand and vacuuming dust around the headboard etc plus fresh sheets can clear the air in the room so it's not so bad at night. Also gargling some brandy can help too!

Chulita · 24/02/2012 19:05

Yep, it's just the cough keeping me up. I 'slept' last night on my side, sitting up. Maybe a good old dust will do the trick, can't hurt.

worra I've been thinking the same thing, like big bear hugs every couple of minutes. Hopefully he likes it cos he's not got much choice!

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 24/02/2012 19:07

Lol well when he's born, you might have to 'jerk' him to sleep in your arms for a few weeks Grin
