To think that someone should have proof read this notice before it went up?

Just picked DD up from preschool and whilst waiting to go in I saw a notice had been put up informing parents what this half-term's topic is.

It included the word 'vegetables' which had been written vegtable's

I don't like to think I'm particularly pedantic but fgs what hope do the children have when the staff can't spell properly? I also appreciate that not being able to spell is not the be all and end all but therefore either don't pick that particular staff member to write notices or at least double check before they go up on display!

I didn't point it out to the staff as they were all in the room together and I didn't want to embarrass anyone but might not be able to stop myself mentioning it on Monday Blush. Would I BU to do so?

I've often pointed out teacher's spelling mistakes in the past Grin
I've even corrected DDs spellings that she has been given to learn before she has learnt them - seems pointless learning them incorrectly to start with!!

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2012 12:42

Mmm difficult one. I picked DS up from pre-school once and he had a certificate which read '(DS's name) done ten jumps on the trampoline. Shock

Dunelm had bath mat's for sale as well. It's everywhere.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/02/2012 12:44

To be really pedantic, that's not a spelling mistake, it's a mistake in punctuation. But I would be pretty appalled by a mistake like that on a school notice.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 24/02/2012 12:45

The unnecessary apostrophe drives me insane but this was also the incorrect spelling!

WorraLiberty · 24/02/2012 12:45

Why would you even try to stop yourself mentioning it on Monday? Confused

I'm sure they'll be very pleased you pointed out their error, if someone hasn't pointed it out already by then.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 24/02/2012 12:46

DD's nursery are split into Daffodils, Daisies etc. Or rather, Daffodil's and Daisy's.

Daisy's - DOUBLE WRONG!!!

OhThisIsJustGrape · 24/02/2012 12:46

The 'e' was missing between 'g' and 't'.

Didn't notice that Oh. Blush.

SDTG - to be really really pedantic, it is wrong! Look again.

We have some fab misunderstandings in Qatar. A new shop has just opened, a chicken schwarma cafe called "Sale of Chicken Murder".
When I lived in the UK I worked at a 16,000 a year prep school whose deputy head didn't agree with "commas and all that crap". It drove me mad, his letters home were appalling and he wouldn't let anyone change them.

Lightofthemoon · 24/02/2012 12:49

That is awful, you have to say something!! They can't spend half a term learning about vegtables!!!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/02/2012 12:50

Argghhhh - I missed that, bibbity! BlushBlush

CailinDana · 24/02/2012 12:50

I am a former primary teacher and I think you should definitely mention it. Unnecessary apostrophes really bug me and I would be mortified if a school was displaying one.

Thanks, Sparklingbrook.

First rule of pedantry - for fuck's sake, get your pedantry right.

FredFredGeorge · 24/02/2012 12:54

Why does half term have a topic?

FredFredGeorge · 24/02/2012 12:57

Daisy's is wrong? Are you sure they're not the half of the nursery that are looked after by Daisy?

cherrytopping · 24/02/2012 12:58

As someone who works with stuff which needs to be proof read, I understand why this happens and have a certain amount of sympathy, but do think it does reflect very badly and certainly a school should be aware of how badly it reflects, even if it is bloody pedantic and petty. Its also about professionalism.

Thing is its amazing how easily you can miss your own obvious spelling mistakes/typos even if its in huge letters. Pass it to someone else and they will spot it instantly.

Moral of the story. If its for public use, always get someone else to proof read to avoid embarrassment. Its worth the time/effort, and honestly I don't see have time for the "too busy" argument on this.

SuePurblybilt · 24/02/2012 12:58

I noticed a trailer on CITV last week with the word 'wierd' in. Couldn't decide if they were trying to be clever and concluded only eejits write in to complain so I didn't. But I thought about it.

GrahamTribe · 24/02/2012 12:58

You wouldn't be at all unreasonable to mention it. I would have as soon as I saw it regardless that all the staff were together at the time, not least because I'd be doubly pissed that one of them hadn't noticed and corrected it.

corlan · 24/02/2012 13:01

I saw 'Fried Rice with 3 special vegtababies' on a Chinese menu once.

(a bit random, I know!)

OhThisIsJustGrape · 24/02/2012 13:01

Sparkling you've just reminded me of the certificate DS1 got many years ago for handwriting. The irony was that his teacher's handwriting was so awful I could barely decipher what the certificate was for!

Fred not sure, it just said the song they were learning was 'Old Macdonald had a farm and lots of vegtable's'. I know they are learning about food etc this half term.

This drives me nuts.

DD once came home from her rising fives group at preschool with a picture made from shapes labelled hexogan's and octogan's.

Not only were they spelt incorrectly with possessive s instead of plural s, they were actually incorrectly labelled (ie. their hexagons had 8 sides and the octagons 6.)

PeahenTailFeathers · 24/02/2012 13:08

You're definitely not being unreasonable - it's making me squirm at the thought of seeing it. But then I'm a dreadful pedant who sent a long e-mail to the Californian tourist website to complain about their advert; it began with one of the Kardashian sisters saying something about there being many misconceptions about California but not all of them were true. If they are misconceptions then, by definition, none of them is true.
