To think that someone should have proof read this notice before it went up?

Just picked DD up from preschool and whilst waiting to go in I saw a notice had been put up informing parents what this half-term's topic is.

It included the word 'vegetables' which had been written vegtable's

I don't like to think I'm particularly pedantic but fgs what hope do the children have when the staff can't spell properly? I also appreciate that not being able to spell is not the be all and end all but therefore either don't pick that particular staff member to write notices or at least double check before they go up on display!

I didn't point it out to the staff as they were all in the room together and I didn't want to embarrass anyone but might not be able to stop myself mentioning it on Monday Blush. Would I BU to do so?

corian Shock vegtababies! I thought they were banned?! Grin

This house of pedants have just been reading Broken English Spoken Perfectly. My favourites were:

For Sale: Canaries of undermined sex
Throat lozenges: not a substitute for human companionship (??? random or what?)
Handgun: not for use as a nutcracker

Our pre-school fees have to be 'payed by the end of term'

They also have a display all about 'Our Hero's'

SDeuchars · 24/02/2012 13:14

Ah, just Googled (should have done it first!) and found the latter two (plus some of the others we liked) included in a list of Silly Warning Labels. Shame they are not real and I think the author was cheating!

BelleEnd · 24/02/2012 13:16

I also saw the CITV ad with "wierd". Makes me foam at the mouth

I once saw listed on a chinese menu, "Chinese Dumping Soup". (It was shit) :o

fedupwithdeployment · 24/02/2012 13:44

Definitely mention it. Yesterday, not only did I have to correct a presentation which included (3x) the words, "company's such as XXX", I had to teach my boss (paid probably 4 or 5 times as much as me) how to cut and paste.

I am a lawyer. Glad they are utlising my skills.

And my 7 year old wouldn't make that mistake!!!

SuePurblybilt · 24/02/2012 13:46

I always thought they did that on purpose Peahen, as a joke.
Overthinking it, clearly Grin.

We have a lovely 'if you leave you're valuables in you're car it is at subject to you're own risk' sign at a playscheme locally. Confused

My Ds got a certificate when in about year 3 or 4 and the teacher wrote on it ' for your reserch on the fire of London' Hmm I still have it!
And another teacher that told the class that the letter T in the word 'next' was silent! Ds argued that with her, but she shouted him down...blew my top I did!

I was reading a phonics book (i.e. phonetically decodable easy-reading type thing) with DS last night and he paused for ages over what I thought was an 'easy' bit:

l can see...
l did not...

I said 'come on DS you've done this before, whats this?' pointing to l. He said 'its LLLL mama.' I started to say 'no its an I', but he was right it was a bloody (non-capitalised) L' - whereas everywhere else (even at the bottom of the same page) they use 'proper' Is. FFS £40 for a set of 15 early readers and they can't even proof-read the bastard things. Thanks Usbourne!

YuleingFanjo · 24/02/2012 15:35

my baby's nursery had a sign up telling parents that some paper work was in their children's Draws!

Ineedalife · 24/02/2012 15:45

I work in a preschool and am pedantic. Not a good mix'''''' Grin

Abra1d · 24/02/2012 15:54

If its for public use, always get someone else to proof read to avoid embarrassment. Its worth the time/effort'

Whoops.

petal2008 · 24/02/2012 15:55

Standing in the queue in the post office there was a sign that said that "stationary" was available at the counter. It made my teeth itch and I was dying to say something.

"Tea's" on a cafe sign was another recently.

My DH thinks I am a pedant about this sort of thing but it drives me mad.

I am constantly correcting people's grammar on the television. " I am stood" or "I was stood" is one and "I had an invite". I have to do it under my breath now as it's becoming embarrassing.

If you are displaying a sign you should double check it for grammar and punctuation. Yes, it does matter.

ChaoticAngel · 24/02/2012 17:39

I saw 'Fried Rice with 3 special vegtababies' on a Chinese menu once.

Are they the ones found under the cabbage patch? Grin

DuchessofMalfi · 24/02/2012 17:52

At DD's school recently, there were some spellings on the whiteboard, including potatoe (no s Shock). In town today I saw a printed sign at a beauty salon inviting people to have a facial and recieve another free treatment. A local window cleaner offers also to clean fascia's. I despair Grin.

This usually drives me nuts, but I did very much enjoy the notice announcing a sale on an 'Otterman' in Dunelm Mill the other day. It was a very ugly ottoman, unfortunately, but every time we see one now DP and I descend into giggles.
