To think abortion law is a tough nut to crack?

so the Telegraph has revealed doctors allowing abortion on sex-selection grounds. I see a couple threads on In the News expressing disgust over this, a view shared by many, I'm sure.

But as far as I understand you can have an abortion on demand for just about any reason - not feeling able to cope, not feeling financially secure, too young, too old.

So even if you were terminating for gender, couldn't you just give another reason? And if you believe in a woman's absolute right to choose - why require a stated reason at all?

My point is that the law seems very flimsy, and why be moral about sex selection and not other things - like terminating because a pregnancy interferes with a desired age gap between children, or it otherwise not being "the right time." I know there are cultural issues involved too with gender selection, but those probably are also in play for women coerced by family not to have a child out of wedlock, etc.

thoughts?

Thank you those who have expressed kind words. It's appreciated.
I am now wondering though if they put what happened to me in those stats, I really do hope not as it wasn't a 'termination'.

It does make you think about the stats as a whole.

GrahamTribe · 24/02/2012 20:52

The majority of the pro lifers haven't called the antis woman haters or accused you of viewing women as immoral sluts, bumbleymummy. To not engage for that reason when most of us haven't said that or because Iuse won't get her opinion through to us (which is a bit insulting really, I can understand "won't change the pro-lifer's minds" but we don't need someone to "get their opion through" to us) seems a disappointing reason for you not to engage in interesting debate.

gordyslovesheep · 24/02/2012 20:53

Pro-lifers don't put their view across very well - sorry

and when trying to stop me exercise any rights over my own body - no they wont win that argument with me

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 20:53

I am so sorry glitter.

gordyslovesheep · 24/02/2012 20:54

and yes I did use the 'slut' line but you are using it out of context :)

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 20:54

Vast amount of terminations in the UK are carried out before 12 weeks.

This idea that women are dead keen to terminate late just because they are a bit thick, silly or selfish is so wrong and awful.

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 20:55

Vast majority whoops.

Would be more if the process was quicker.

desperatenotstupid · 24/02/2012 20:57

I am prolife, i am not passive-aggressive, i am certainly not going to hide my views either. I do not however think women who have abortions are sluts or immoral etc etc. I do however know of a woman who has had multiple abortions and pretty much uses it as a form of contraception, she is a big women's libber and sees it as her right - well fuck her rights, this particular woman IS a slut and a profoundly horrible person. Thankfully, there are few women like this. Sorry, but every time an abortion debate comes up i think of this woman boasting about her abortions one night in the pub, i wanted to punch her

bumbleymummy · 24/02/2012 20:59

Actually Yuleing, I was quoting gordy:

"gordyslovesheep Fri 24-Feb-12 18:55:54
I can asnwer that thisisextremelyverynotgood - it's based on the morals of the WOMAN - if she was FORCED to have sex or a less than perfect 'baby' is in there - she is blameless and to be allowed a choice - if she got pregnant through nice happy sex she is an imoral slut who should be punished"

The 'pro-choicers' seem to like misrepresenting the pro-life point of view by doing things like that.

gordyslovesheep · 24/02/2012 20:59

so not a great candiate for being a mum then Desperate

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 24/02/2012 20:59

Thank you bumbley Smile

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 24/02/2012 20:59

Women's libber?
Does she wear dungerees Hmm

YuleingFanjo · 24/02/2012 20:59

wow, pro lifers always do seem to know a woman who stands about in pubs boasting about her abortions. Maybe they all know the same person?

bumbleymummy · 24/02/2012 21:00

SQ, where I live most people are pro-life. I found the views on MN quite shocking when I first started posting here.

desperatenotstupid · 24/02/2012 21:00

Interesting point about IVF, i remember a friend of mine telling me about her IVF experience and when she had to make the decision whether or not to keep her embryos, fuck, what a decision - she was desperate for a baby, wwent through hell to get one, but was soo poorly wiht the IVF that she just couldnt go through it again so those embryos were destroyed. Gawd, thats quite a dilemma for someone isnt it :(

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 21:00

So all women should be prevented from having abortions because a small number of women are like the woman you know?

There are quite a few blokes who are feckless bastards. Is there any way we can punish all men for the fecklessness of the few?

YuleingFanjo · 24/02/2012 21:00

"Actually Yuleing, I was quoting gordy"

oh yes, and completely out of context too.

AThingInYourLife · 24/02/2012 21:00

"I do however know of a woman who has had multiple abortions and pretty much uses it as a form of contraception, she is a big women's libber and sees it as her right - well fuck her rights, this particular woman IS a slut and a profoundly horrible person."

:o

A big women's libber?

A ahahahahahahahahahahahaha

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 21:01

where do you live bumbleymummy

gordyslovesheep · 24/02/2012 21:01

No - that IS the case for many pro-lifers - they only think termination should be allowed where the woman didn't choose to have sex or the baby isn't perfect - ask them :)

it was in response to 2 other posts - put it in context

hth x

gordyslovesheep · 24/02/2012 21:02

A big womens libber sounds a bit like a great big fibber Grin

bumbleymummy · 24/02/2012 21:02

Actually, the reason I haven't been engaging is because it was nightmare trying to post from my phone with no wifi! I've seen these threads too many times before though. To be fair, this one hasn't had as many insults hurled at pro-lifers as usual.

GrahamTribe · 24/02/2012 21:03

desperate, I'm not doubting that such women exist but surely they are in the very, very small minority? to argue a pro life belief on the basis of such a small number of women is doing a huge disservice to the majority. Why should the majority suffer for the actions of so few? In most laws this is not the case.

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 21:03

I am still at a loss to understand how women who have been raped will prove that, in the prolifers world.

gordyslovesheep · 24/02/2012 21:03

PS - quoting me - and saying ergo 'all' pro-choice people on this thread said that - a bit of a reach really!
