Unwanted calls

to think that if someone calls you on your land line in the evening that they should at the very least be able to speak PLAIN english!! I am sick of getting calls and not being able to understand what they are calling about !!!

The Geordies or the Scousers? I always have problems with those accents, being a Janner and all!

chaddychick · 23/02/2012 14:58

OP you sound lovely.

nowittynamehere · 23/02/2012 15:03

I know these cold calls are annoying for us (i meant the calling not them being foriners ), but i always feel for the people on the other end , Its a job that they probably over qualified for and dont really want to do but its money innit ,

TroublesomeEx · 23/02/2012 15:05

I'm more annoyed with the fact that we get several silent and marketing calls daily and, when I tried to register our number on the telephone preference website, I found out we were already registered with them.

I'd prefer them to speak English but it's not their fault they don't! They're just doing a job and getting paid next to fuck all for it so that the UK based company can maximise their profits. Not really the employees you should be cross with!

I'm more bothered when I phone someone and can't understand them, because I want to speak to them. I don't want to speak to anyone who cold calls us.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 23/02/2012 15:08

Did you name change just to start this thread or are you new?

(Whichever answer is strange.)

Anyhow, if you're new, welcome to MN get some capitals, stick around, it's fun.

Smile
nowittynamehere · 23/02/2012 15:11

folkgirl they get past the telephone preferance thing by having 0800 or 0845 number because we are registered and we get those silent calls , I have also had a few computer scam calls asking me to turn my pc on blah de blah , told them i was reprting them to the police .

mojitomania · 23/02/2012 15:19

I registered with an online company that stops them for free, forget what it's called. Will probably start getting calls from them soon Grin

mojitomania · 23/02/2012 15:20

Blimey OP, there's someone just like you on here called fabbychic, they do say we all have a doppleganger Grin

TroublesomeEx · 23/02/2012 15:23

oh that explains it then, nowittynamehere. I do 1471 and, yes many of them are 0845 numbers, if a number is left at all. It's just so grrrrrrr!

WorraLiberty · 23/02/2012 15:24

Register with TPS and that should cut right down on the amount you receive

It takes a few months to really notice the difference but it does work.

There seems to be sod all I can do about the 'recorded messages' that ring me every day...up to 4 or 6 times though Angry

FilterCoffee · 23/02/2012 15:26

YANBU.

The ability to speak clear, good English should be a job requirement for these positions. Or course, this should apply to applicants whose first language is English, as well as those for whom English is not their first language.

Speaking clear English is a learnable skill. If someone's spoken English is not up to the required standard they should find a different job or go on an English course.

It doesn't matter at all if someone is not a native English speaker or has a foreign accent, but only as long as they can be readily understood by everyone they phone.

CoffeeDog · 23/02/2012 15:26

I always pass the phone over to one of my twin 3yr olds.... keeps them busy for 5 minutes and i am sure whoever is on the other end of the line NEEDS to know the in's and out's of their day ;)

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 23/02/2012 15:30

Right there with you Folk Girl - all of it

I have to admit ocasionally, after the 4th call of the evening, I do sometimes lose my temper and have I a go at the poor call centre person... Blush then I apologise and tell them I understand it's not their fault but could they please pass it on that I DON'T WANT THEM TO CALL ME ANYMORE

I always feel horrible after that, as they are clearly pissed of with me but stay very polite and wish me good evening Blush Sad

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 23/02/2012 15:31

Oh Coffee Dog what a great idea Grin thank you thank you thank you!

jenfraggle · 23/02/2012 15:35

We keep getting calls for Mrs Dyer. I have no idea who she is, we bought the house a couple of years ago and had a new number but we still get regular calls for her. Each time we tell the caller to remove the details from their system as they have the wrong number but we keep getting them. It's not even the same company each time so she is obviously on some list that has been sold to lots of places.

scaryteacher · 23/02/2012 15:39

It's amusing when we get cold calls as we live in Belgium, and they start speaking to me in French. I either pass them to dh, or, say (in French) that I only speak English, at which point they go away.

Sparklingbrook · 23/02/2012 15:39

Caller display is your friend. If I don't recognise the number I don't answer it. Especially 0800 numbers and International. Witheld I have to answer as it could be school, Docs, hospital though.

FilterCoffee · 23/02/2012 15:53

Telephone Preference Service here Will stop UK sales calls but not those from overseas.

Hammy02 · 23/02/2012 15:55

I got cold called last night at about 9:30 and pretended to panic that it must be a bad news call being so late. Cold calling shouldn't be allowed. Simple as that. If I want to buy something, I will go out and buy it. I'm not an idiot.

D0oinMeCleanin · 23/02/2012 16:01

Us geordies speak perfect English I'll have you know, faeriefruitcake. It's the rest of youse who can't talk proper Grin

But you have reminded of the time I was working in a bar all the way in Manchester, two drunken geordies were trying to order a pint, after the poor girl had gotten them to repeat themselves four times she still did not have a clue what they were asking for. I translated for her before she resorted to getting them to point at things on the wine list Grin

In reply to the Op, just put the phone down, it's not hard. I personally don't answer my landline unless I am in a good mood or I am expecting an important call. I do the same with my mobile. I am not a socialable person. I don't like talking to people.

2ombie5layer · 23/02/2012 16:02

Dont answer the phone. If you are worried it could be someone important you could either get caller display, dial 1471 after and ring straight back, get an answer phone or get a mobile.

We have a different ring tone for my parents and MIL so we know if we need to answer (no-one else ever rings our landline)
