... A tissue? She is literally sniffing every 6-7 seconds (yes, I'm timing it!!)

Don't think I can bear to listen to her for the next 34 minutes.

YANBU, as long as you're polite and try to sound sympathetic about her snuffles.

Paiviaso · 23/02/2012 12:05

YANBU, it is grating.

CharminglyOdd · 23/02/2012 12:05

YANBU

Eaglewings · 23/02/2012 12:06

I try and carry those handy packs of tissues in my bag at all times. Have been known to give them to sniffers who are not in my family or even known to me, public transport especially :)

nowittynamehere · 23/02/2012 12:06

YANBU if she is sitting next to you get a tissue out wipe your nose moan about the cold and offer her 1 ,

faintpinkline · 23/02/2012 12:06

give her one she may be wishing she had one but be nice - is she crying or just got a bad cold?

NoWayNoHow · 23/02/2012 12:07

Will have to practise looking sympathetic rather than sounding it as she has headphones in which is probably why she can't hear how bloody annoying she is

YW definitely NBU. I have been the giver and the recipient of tissues in such situations. Once handed a tissue to a young man (sound like my gran Grin) sitting next to me in the theatre as lights went down. He smiled gratefully. Found myself without a tissue on the train: three options - snot running down face, wipe nose on sleeve, sniff - but fortunately a nice woman opposite me saw me scrabbling in my bag and handed me a tissue. She would probably be grateful!

Mumof1plustwins · 23/02/2012 12:12

Not U at all. It is grating when someone keeps sniffing. DD does it but she's 6...but I still constantly tell her to blow her nose! I think she's worried her brain will fall out because she still never bothers Hmm Wink

CreepyWeeBrackets · 23/02/2012 12:17

YANBU.

Don't try it in a club though. My Mum went through her entire stock of tissues on my Hen Night. She still remarks to this day how strange it was that so many of my mates had terrible sniffles that night Grin

Eaglewings · 23/02/2012 12:30

Why do some people think the noise of blowing your nose is less socially acceptable than sniffing (not the type of sniffing at CWB's hen night)?

Robinredboobs · 23/02/2012 12:39

I agree EAgle. he sound of someone blowing their nose makes me feel physically sick! I must be weird cos I just can't blow my nose it feels horrible..would much rather sniff but I really do try not to as I realise most people get annoyed by it :)

flywiththecrows · 23/02/2012 12:40

take a tissue out, blow your nose, if she looks at you then offer her one.

otherwise just try to ignore.

and Shock at creepy and her coke fiend friends Grin

cjbk1 · 23/02/2012 12:50

Just do it! when patients rinse then wipe their mouths with their hands I say "heres a tissue" and when they come in with spluttering children I say "it's better to reschedule when someone's not well, you won't be charged"

Greatdomestic · 23/02/2012 13:35

Ha ha.

I did this on a train once. A girl sititng oppostie me had been sniffing for ages

Me: would you like a tissue
her: no thanks, I'm fine
Me: ok then, whilst stuffing the tissue in my ears to block out her sniffing.

OhChristFenton · 23/02/2012 13:37

YANBU

I can never understand the repeated sniffing like that, if sniffing didn't solve the problem after a couple of goes then obviously you need to BLOW. --or cuff it if you don't have a tissue-

hookaduck · 23/02/2012 13:40

cjbk1 I don't understand that post Confused

GreatDomestic - [Grin]

sniffers on public transport are the worst kind of torture

MrsBonkers · 23/02/2012 13:45

Do it.
I had to sniff on the train last week. No tissues with me and the alternative was snot running into my mouth!!
Couldn't wait to get off. was embarrassed as I knew it must be annoying.

leeloo1 · 23/02/2012 14:42

I have allergic rhinitus and before I found out what it was I sniffed all the time. A couple of times I was offered tissues by strangers and it was very embarrassing. I didn't need to blow my nose (blowing it didn't help one bit) it was just permanently itchy/irritated and sniffing relieved it a tiny bit.

Luckily steroids cleared it up. :)

MamaLazarou · 23/02/2012 14:47

YANBU - it drives me round the bend and must be stopped.

Pseudo341 · 23/02/2012 14:49

YANBU assuming you're polite about it. Bear in mind she may not be able to help it, for about 5 years as a child I was constantly being told off for sniffing, turned out I had excessive tissue growth inside my nose and had to sniff to breathe, one simple operation solved it and there was no more sniffing.

chipsplease · 23/02/2012 14:58

I don't get creepys post!

Finallyfinally · 23/02/2012 15:02

I was caught sniffing on the train on Monday - woke up no problem, nose started uncontrollably leaking - no tissues to be found in bag.

I got a dirty look from the woman next to me but no tissue offered so there was naff all I could do about it.
