To think curry using shop bought sauce is not homemade curry

I mean the type where you basically fry up onions and meat/veg and then pour in sauce from a jar.

Not homemade curry IMO.

Thanks. I'll have a look. Smile

LisaD1 · 23/02/2012 21:11

YABU! I have just enjoyed a delicious homemade curry, I am at home and I made it, complete with Sharwoods sauce, therefore it is home made Grin although my husband (who is of Indian origin) says as it was a Korma I'm pushing my luck calling it a curry let alone a home made one!

vincettenoir · 23/02/2012 22:52

I agree with OP

EllenParsons · 23/02/2012 23:35

Using curry paste - homemade
Using ready made curry sauce - not homemade

HoneyandHaycorns · 23/02/2012 23:42

I'm curious as to why people think a paste is different from a sauce?

FootprintsInTheSnow · 24/02/2012 13:54

Sauce generally requires a lot of stabilisers etc - and is obviously all in one.

paste gives you the spices only. You fry the paste first to release the flavours, and then add extra ingredients as you need.

You have much more control over the finished product - and it is generally tastier and healthier.

Agincourt · 24/02/2012 13:59

do you know, i don't care. I think meat/veg/jar sauce is a good way to start your cooking skills off if you have none before you move onto other stuff.

I still use pataks paste to make curry as it's just less of a faff

Agincourt · 24/02/2012 14:00

I like the LLoyd grossman sauces too, they are really nice imo.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 24/02/2012 15:10

Agree re paste, it's an ingredient, it's a condiment.

a jar of sauce is not A ingredient!

it is not home made if you did not see all the ingredients that went into it!

ReduceRecycleRegift · 24/02/2012 15:13

and I don't see how it's food snobbery when most people are saying there's nowt WRONG with jars, its just not homemade! it's not like everyone who says it's not homemade says its also wrong!

Chopping veg, frying chicken and chucking in some sauce def counts at home made, but I wouldn't go boasting about it or serve it for a dinner party.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/03/2013 17:54

Oh so fucking what. I haven't read the thread, I don't care if it's a thread about a thread, I just hate these kind of shitty one upmanship OPs.

Buzzardbird · 14/03/2013 17:55

Will no-one think of the children that have to eat these jar meals? Grin

HarrietSchulenberg · 14/03/2013 17:59

Sauce in jars is usually full of crap and far too much sugsr and salt. Alright if you like that crap but it's certainly not home made. It was made in a factory ffs.

TomDudgeon · 14/03/2013 18:00

Hmm where's the balance between curry sauce and curry paste

We use paste as its a faff to have all the bits for it and ends up with wastage. The sauce is horrible though

SkinnybitchWannabe · 14/03/2013 18:02

Who cares? Eat what you like

TomDudgeon · 14/03/2013 18:05

does it count as cooking it yourself? yum
definitely cheating vile

Coffeenowplease · 14/03/2013 18:08

I dont think it counts as home made either but thats not to say I wouldnt eat/enjoy it just as much !

I quite happily use jar sauces even for pasta (which admittedly i dont eat very often) but I wouldnt call it home made pasta as such

Coffeenowplease · 14/03/2013 18:09

YY to LLoyd grossman sauces as well. Very nice.

Cassarick · 14/03/2013 18:13

Does it really matter - really?

toddlerama · 14/03/2013 18:13

It's not homemade - don't make me laugh! That's not a food snob issue, that's just a fact. It's made in a factory. And if you were making it at home you would not add the same ingredients. The stabilisers etc. are there so it can sit on a shelf without separating and looking manky.

Dadthelion · 14/03/2013 18:18

I find a takeaway menu and a phone works wonders anyway.

It's home made in their shop.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 14/03/2013 18:32
Confused But the only difference cooking wise between a jar of paste and a jar of sauce is bunging in a tin of tomatoes??
TomDudgeon · 14/03/2013 18:38

And ginger/coriander/onions etc

These food snobby posts make me laugh
I been known to hand make bread and pasta (well rolling machine), make bread in a machine, make jam, butter, roast homegrown chicken, make yoghurt etc buy I really cannot be arsed to make distinctions or be snobby and judge people for what they can or can't or choose to do or not do.
