French, German, English days- hikes up the hills- Kaffe und Küchen- Prees and Joeys and Mary Lous rounding up the miscreants.....would it be impossible, do you think?

Wonder if there is a school like this left!

Am so excited to see this thread. I adore these books. Can't wait to introduce my 5.5 dd to them. I was off school ill and my mum bought me the chalet school and jo which is the second book I think. I was 6 or so and became abso hooked on them. Still love the stories now. Kaffeeklatsch and kuchen totally top hole.

RueDeWakening · 22/02/2012 14:14

Charlie marries someone called Jock and sails off to New Zealand, after the war cos Jock is in Singapore or somesuch, I seem to remember it's all a bit tough for her though and he dies young?

Agree re Kathy Ferrars & Nancy Wilmot, loved up those two :o

Had my suspicions about Margot Maynard too (the trip, not the other one) - I reckon that's why she decides to be a nun, she's denying being gay.

Tinuviel · 22/02/2012 15:22

And here was me thinking there weren't many Chalet School fans!! I have the full set, with about 20 in hardback and a couple of GGB versions (so at least the full version).

DD has a Chalet School name Blush, although DH didn't know that at the time. I just suggested it as a name I liked. Well, he wouldn't let me call her Arwen (from LOTR).

I don't remember Charlie's husband dying - didn't she suggest the CS to Emerence Hope's parents later on when she was living in Australia?

Tinuviel · 22/02/2012 15:24

And the series really did encourage me with languages - I am now a languages teacher. I wish I could teach at the CS - much better behaved than the little dears I currently teach!

quirrelquarrel · 22/02/2012 16:39

"She had begun life with a Kerry brogue like cream. Years at the Chalet School had largely cured her of it but it moments of stress it bobbed up again." :o don't think my muddled hotchpotch accent would survive for long!

waits patiently by the Common Room door for someone to be appointed my sheepdog

Love, love, love this thread. So pleased not to be the only certifiable eccentric woman who loves CS.

Miss Annersley I am mortified that I can actually remember, without looking, that Bill replied to the poudre comment with "Oh you!". Definitely indicative of something...

CockyPants · 22/02/2012 19:29

Come over all nostalgic now. Will go in to parents loft this weekend and dig my cs books out.
Scary thing is all the excerpts posters have quoted...I remember them word for word...
Ps mum and dad if you have binned them you are soooo dead....

quirrelquarrel · 22/02/2012 19:37

She did, Clover! "with a queer laugh". I just remember the oh-so cliche, "solid lump of comfort"...obvs am not real connoisseuse.
Am up to the Getrud bit where she starts feeling guilty. Good.

That's the quote - thank you.

I've tried to find the article but think it must have been in one of my 'friends of the Chalet School' magazines. I used to be a member. Blush

barbarianoftheuniverse · 22/02/2012 20:02

So did I Miss A (bobs quick curtsey) but one day it dawned on me that I had joined something very slightly insane unusual...
So I flung my CSs at the local charity shop and ran.

You can run, but you can't hide...

MissAnnersley · 22/02/2012 20:08

Yes, it did seem a bit 'odd'.

I was lured in by interesting articles on the web site (years ago) but the actual monthly magazine wasn't that great.

But goodness me, they are an enthusiastic lot. Grin

SweetestThing · 22/02/2012 20:49

I so wanted a velveteen frock.

MrsJoeDuffy · 22/02/2012 21:09

I just ordered a stack of these from my local library. Happy days :)

Oooh, I have just found out that EMB-D's grave is about 10 minutes' drive from my house! I feel a pilgrimage coming on....maybe I could take some flowers on behalf of this thread :o

Northernlurker · 22/02/2012 21:41

I don't think Charlie's husband dies does he? I seem to think Miss Carthew's does though - it is Miss Carthew who finds Theodora for the CHalet School isn't it - and it's mentioned there. Deira's husband dies in New Zealand as does her daughter Sad and of course poor Miss Durrant loses both husband and baby daughter and returns to the school (as Mrs Redmond) 'to find work to fill her empty life'

RueDeWakening · 22/02/2012 22:28

Could be I'm getting Jock mixed up with someone else, the men are fairly interchangable really :o

thebody · 22/02/2012 22:31

Omg!!! Fellow challetians! Yes acid squirting was Richards frys eyes at the dentists! And new matron was matron Besley!

Miss bubb? What a cow!

And as soon as you get married can the career! Daisy venables for instance!

Len, con, margin, Steve, Charles, Michael, felic and felicity, Cecil, Phillips and Geoffrey!

Poor Anna looking after that lot! No contract there!

thebody · 22/02/2012 22:32

Oh and miss Redmond married again as mrs van buren'

MissAnnersley · 22/02/2012 22:42

There was a really interesting thread on a Chalet School fan site that asked who would play the main characters in a film of the Chalet School.

I spent a silly amount of time today thinking about this but could only come up with <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=rupert+penry-jones&hl=en&biw=1366&bih=677&gbv=2&tbm=isch&tbnid=rxUg9UEsC67EYM:&imgrefurl=mi5not9to5.tumblr.com/page/5&docid=M-wcm8NL-pAXrM&imgurl=25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ln20pe77cJ1qbevhto1_400.jpg&w=280&h=390&ei=c25FT9TmNMqR0AXckdmLBA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=936&vpy=301&dur=9&hovh=265&hovw=190&tx=113&ty=242&sig=107089107462356734862&page=2&tbnh=159&tbnw=121&start=21&ndsp=28&ved=0CNYBEK0DMCE" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Jack Maynard

Obviously just feeding my fantasy here. Grin

Who would play Madge or the adult Joey?

thebody · 22/02/2012 23:01

Oh and miss Redmond married again as mrs van buren'

thebody · 22/02/2012 23:03

Madge, Gwyny Paltrow and jo and jack Maynard, Monica and chandler!

thebody · 22/02/2012 23:23

This thread has taken me out of reality, great for me at moment, has anyone read 'the chalet girls grow up' by mervyn Williams!?

Basically, jo goes ga ga, Madge is dead, jack shoots himself, school goes bankrupt, Len married reg and he a violent bully who shags off with, omg, MARYLOU!!!!!

Margin leaves nuns but too old to have kids, con leaves it too late too, Sybil Russell is a slag! So is felicity!
Geoffrey special needs!
It was awful! Back of my wardrobe now never to be read again, desecration! But funny.

Much more uplifting is ' peace comes to the chalet school' by Katherine Bruce, really good read,

nothingoldcanstay · 22/02/2012 23:34

Nicole Kidman should be in somewhere for sure. Minnie Driver for one of the Irish contingent.

Monica is perfect for Jo!

SarahStratton · 22/02/2012 23:38

But, but, Monica is American. Shock
