to think this gift is excessive?

My brother is quite well off. He works abroad and comes home twice a year. He arrived yesterday with gifts for everyone (he missed Christmas) and amongst them was an iPad to be shared by my girls. They are 3 and 4. I'm actually looking for advice not screams of 'ungrateful bitch' as I'm not really sure what this thing does but it looks expensive. My brother says 'lots of kids have them'. Do any of you lot have kids this age with one? My OH says they cost a lot of money and that is why I'm wondering 'excessive'?

He prob got from abroad but its worth be about 300.00 he bought it get some Apps on it for your children and let them use it.

Seabright · 19/02/2012 17:46

They are expensive, but wonderful. Make sure your girls say a really good thank you & enjoy it! (typed on an iPad!)

Seabright · 19/02/2012 17:48

Good apps for 3-4 year olds are Doodlebuddy (the paid for one has no ads), Peppa Pig's Happy Mrs Chicken & Peppa Pig Stars. Also, BBC iplayer

scurryfunge · 19/02/2012 17:48

One each would have been excessive!

They are expensive but let your brother spoil his nieces once in a while. It's not the sort of present I would buy a young child but I would snaffle it away!

TheMonster · 19/02/2012 17:49

Far too excessive so send it to me Grin

Gumby · 19/02/2012 17:49

I would have it for myself Grin

MrsKittyFane · 19/02/2012 17:49

Not excessive if he has the money.

Does he have DC? If not he was probably not sure what to get and I would say very generous even if your DC are a bit young.

There are some good Apps they could use especially books/ stories and basic literacy and maths as well as dressing up games so nice present overall.

Do you feel a bit guilty about accepting OP? If you can't buy something as generous in return just tell him but let him know how grateful you are :)

It's a very very generous gift but I'd go buy a really robust case for it first off, my 12 year old got one for her birthday and my 7 year old won't get one for ages but it's becaus she's good at breaking things not that I object on moral grounds...

I saw a very robust looking one on amazon a while back, I think it was made out of recycled tyresM

I don't know of any 3 & 4 y/o kids with iPads. I don't have one myself, so I don't really know what a child of that age might do with one.

Bringing a pressie from overseas can be a problem, given restrictions on weight and size.

Give him the benefit of the doubt, he meant well, but maybe over did it a tad.

zeeboo · 19/02/2012 17:52

One each would have been excessive. I'd keep it as a family gift rather than it being under the childrens ownership as they are fragile but other than that I'd just be incredibly grateful. My nearly 2 yr old loves mine.

Nux · 19/02/2012 17:52

Oh, you should get the Toca Boca apps - all of them are great but my DD (nearly 3) particularly loves the tea party and birthday party, and the hair salon. My nephew who's 5 even enjoyed them! It's a very generous gift and can be wonderful fun

skylarsmammy · 19/02/2012 17:53

Thanks everyone. It's been a busy family weekend but bro is coming back over tonight, seeing as he bought it he can set it up! I'll mention these apps, they both love Angry Birds on my OH's phone, can you get that for ipad? (yes, I'm a luddite). I promise not to let it turn into a £300 (!) angry birds machine Hmm

MrsKittyFane · 19/02/2012 17:54

BTW, if you're not sure what it does, ask him if he could set it up for you with Apps for your DC.
Does anyone know any good ones for 3/4 year olds? There will be lot of good ones! Seabright has named a few!
My DD is a bit older.

MrsKittyFane · 19/02/2012 17:54

XPost OP! I want a brother like yours! :)

MrsKittyFane · 19/02/2012 17:56

Yes Angry birds is there and a million times better ( bigger screen) on I pad than on phone!

Seabright · 19/02/2012 17:59

Am just downloading a Toca Boca game (hair salon) any other suggestions? DD is 3.5

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 19/02/2012 18:01

Between both of them, an expensive but not totally excessive present - and a very nice one! Buy a good case for it straightaway and make sure your bro gets two lovely thank yous and the title of Favourite Uncle :)

valiumredhead · 19/02/2012 18:05

What a nice generous uncle!

Glittertwins · 19/02/2012 18:08

You sound like you have a very nice and generous brother :)
I have a fairly robust generic cover for mine and our two (coming up on 4) love it. Doodle buddy is great, the Peppa Pig party games keeps the occupied for a while as they can both play at the same time. Math bingo, simple Maths, animal pairs, dinosaur creation.
I have an entire section of games for them.

usualsuspect · 19/02/2012 18:10

What a generous brother I would keep it for myself Your dds will love it

skylarsmammy · 19/02/2012 18:12

Right, I've made a list of the app suggestions, thanks. (is there a list app, I love lists!)
Great call on a good cover, I have Amazon gift card left over from Christmas, will use that.
Not for a cunning plan to keep DH away from it, he's been eyeing it up all day.
Yes, my brother is wondrous, a real proper uncle who dotes on my girls. If only I could find him a perfect SIL for me wife

Tortington · 19/02/2012 18:13
