to think this gift is excessive?

My brother is quite well off. He works abroad and comes home twice a year. He arrived yesterday with gifts for everyone (he missed Christmas) and amongst them was an iPad to be shared by my girls. They are 3 and 4. I'm actually looking for advice not screams of 'ungrateful bitch' as I'm not really sure what this thing does but it looks expensive. My brother says 'lots of kids have them'. Do any of you lot have kids this age with one? My OH says they cost a lot of money and that is why I'm wondering 'excessive'?

If he works abroad he might have bought it a bit cheaper, but he does sound a lovely uncle.
Definitely get the covers.
My GC loves Tozzle, Jellybook, Jellytoons, Balloons, Glow Draw and all the Talking animals - Larry, Pierre etc. (3 year-old).
And I love Triple Town and Scrabble!

My 6 year old has one and they are fab once you figure them out, let your brother spoil them Grin

Hassled · 19/02/2012 18:48

I used to have the same sort of guilty angst about my rich, generous and childless brother. Now I just embrace it :o. It gives him pleasure - and he has impeccable taste. Enjoy Angry Birds!

They're fab, I have one and my just turned 2 year old can use it on his own to watch films etc they'll love it!

south345 · 19/02/2012 18:53

And I second tozzle all my kids love it.

wonkylegs · 19/02/2012 18:58

We got a 'family one' from IL's pre loaded with loads of educational apps for 3yo DS.
It is an extravagant unnecessary gift but that's why it's a spoiling gift.
Be careful what apps you add as some have in app purchases which kids click on without a thought but as long as your careful this doesn't need to be a problem.

I find this clip frankly scary!!

chilihotdog · 19/02/2012 19:06

If your brother can afford it and he doesn't see them too often, it's not excessive. HOWEVER, be aware that it is an expensive 'toy' and as such if it gets broken you really can't blame a 3 or 4 year old. It wasn't built for them. With lots of supervision the whole family can get hours of enjoyment out of it. I LOVE mine my DH's even though I rarely get to use it. I particularly love lying in bed in the dark with the kids watching movies on it, there's something really fun about that Smile

That video is AMAZING!

troisgarcons · 19/02/2012 19:08

I actually know a sub 2yo who can whizz round an iPad and find CBBies on it - which I find amazing coz I still stare at the sky remote in wonderment.

SmethwickBelle · 19/02/2012 19:10

Do not fear the iPad! We have a "family" one and both 2 year old and 4 year old DSs use it on occasion. There's stacks of toddler games, including some very good phonics ones. DS2 is 2 and he loves a game where you draw with a sparkly brush that makes a tune. DS1 was into an app called Labryinth 2 for ages which is like a marble maze thing and you can build your own mazes.

It's also astonishingly hard wearing, it's been dropped more times than I care to remember and its still working just fine (most basic model 2 years ago).

My friends little boy hes one he is nearly 4. He loves it plays with it all the time and is very careful with it. He was told it was expensive (a concept i'm not sure he gets) and that not many kids his age have them so it's a real privilege (sp?) so he mustn't drop it just in case it breaks. I think he just loves it so much he won't risk breaking it.

Your brother is very generous, say Thanks and enjoy

mamij · 19/02/2012 19:21

What a wonderful, generous brother!

My sister got me and DH one for Christmas (I also thought it was far to extravagant), but she's much better off than us and gave it to us because she loves us very much (not to mention DH has been eyeing them up for ages).

DD1 (2 yo) loves it. Peppa pig apps are great! CBebbies on iPlayer is great for repeats/shows you want DC to watch while you have your hands full doing other things. You can also great really good children's books too.

Definitely agree with the sturdy case!
