like you can with sneezing. As in with sneezing you can either go "AAAAAAAACHHHOOOOOOO!" or you can do that quiet internal kind of sneeze when you know one is coming.

DH is in the room below where the baby is sleeping and I asked him to try to cough more quietly as he's been coughing really loudly for days and it's a massive pain having to go and feed a baby back to sleep several times an evening.

DH thinks it's not possible to have quieter coughs and seems to think I am being an arse Shock.

If anyone's got any good cough remedies please share. I'm on my third night of sleeping on the sofa so I don't keep waking dh up. It was nine nights with my last cold so it's early days.

LittlebearH · 19/02/2012 01:35

SHUT THE FUCK UP - COUGH WANKER Grin

LittlebearH · 19/02/2012 01:43

LOL

WannabeEarthMomma · 19/02/2012 01:49

YABU, sorry.

I could strangle my DP when he tells me to cough/sneeze quietly. Yes dear, it also woke ME, and I am the one coughing and feeling shit!!

Do you honestly think your DH wouldn't do it more quietly if he could?

zipzap · 19/02/2012 11:36

Another thing that helps me when coughing is really bad is to have a squirty bottle of runny honey. If you are having a coughing fit and can get a little squirt of the honey on your Tongue and then swallow safely it seems to soothe your throat and reduce the coughing quite quickly.

Fishermen's friends cough sweets are disgusting but useful to melt slowly in your mouth before you are coughing if you think a cough fit is coming - say you know you need to male a phone call or have a conversation with someone. But no good if you are actually coughing as they just end up being a choking hazard.

OnlyWantsOne · 19/02/2012 11:38

YABU Confused

I am normally a "quiet" sneezer but this morning at 5.30am I had the most violent sneezing fit that was very very loud.

Same with coughs... You can't control them.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/02/2012 14:38

TSC you really should stop pinching Jose it's not nice... Grin

Psammead · 19/02/2012 14:43

PrideOfChanur · 19/02/2012 15:00

Yabu, for anything more than just the occasional cough. Those people recommending muffling a cough in a pillow, how exactly is the cougher supposed to breathe? Grin Last time I had a proper cough I was having bouts of coughing that didn't quite end in being sick but were heading there - no way would it have been possible to muffle that effectively in a pillow,or do it quietly. Also the fact that I was bolt upright next to DH shaking all over might have been just as disturbing... (that was with medication too, just before it had worked)
When Ds was little I cracked a rib coughing - hard to do that quietly.
If you go under the duvet you are flat and that makes the cough worse...

scarletforya · 19/02/2012 15:35

I have asthma and can cough like a machine gun when I'm sick. It's horrific and impossible to suppress. I even piss myself off!

madmouse · 19/02/2012 15:36

Not sure about coughing less loudly, but lots of people including my dh cough really badly and inefficiently . Having asthma/chronic bronchitis I've spent time working out how to cough in a way that doesn't leave me drained, raw and sore. Then when dh has a cough at night he insists on lying flat on his back when having a coughing fit and it makes me go aaaaarggggghhhhhh

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 19/02/2012 15:38

I can usually control sneezes and do them a bit more quietly, but trying to cough quietly just makes it last longer and get louder.

SardineQueen · 19/02/2012 15:48

YABU

I have never understood how people do that thing where when they sneeze they just make a tiny strangled squeaking noise.

The point of a sneeze is the body trying to clear crud or an irritant out of your body, your body is trying to expel something. Coughs are caused by irritation and / or crud as well. Suppressing them, apart from the fact that I don't even understand how, what effect does that have on the body? If you are stopping yourself coughing up a big lump of phlegm that your body wants to get rid of, how is that healthy?

Mind you I don't understand people who only poo in their own bog, and am at ease with people belching, so maybe i am just a bit more earthy than others Grin

SardineQueen · 19/02/2012 15:49

Only thing that pisses me off with coughing /sneezing is when people don't cover their mouths.

nobodyspecial · 19/02/2012 16:09

YAB TOTALLY AND UTTERLY UNREASONABLE.

You're husband is DOWNSTAIRS though isn't he? Try breastfeeding a month old baby and coughing with EVERY BREATH for the past week and a half.
YES, that is what I'VE been doing.

Last night it got so bad I had to go to the emergency out of hours doctor. They put me on a nebuliser, which didn't work. I'm on amoxicillin and erythromycin which are doing shit all. I feel like clawing out my insides.

Coughing into a pillow?? Ha!! Why or how the hell would that work when you can hardly breathe properly in the first place?!

TeapotsInJune · 19/02/2012 16:14

Woah, calm down.

Yes, YABU but I sympathise!

I always stifle my sneezes, in public anyway. How can't you?

zipzap · 19/02/2012 20:18

Nobodyspecial - that sounds miserable.

Do try having honey 'sips' - I have really bad fits of coughing that can go on a long time (albeit not quite for a week on the trot) and leave me completely unable to do anything ) and it is one of the few things that can help there and then. If I think I'm going to need a lot then might mix a large spoonful of honey with a little boiling water and maybe a little freshly squeezed lemon (or a couple of drops of jif lemon if needs be) and/or splash of brandy/whiskey/etc. Use equal measures of each or do it to taste, but plenty of honey to make it really soothing.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

HumphreyCobbler · 19/02/2012 20:23

don't know about coughing but people who vocalize their sneezes should be shot

bringmesunshine2009 · 19/02/2012 20:26

Yo thesecondcoming who is Jose and why d'ya wee every time you pinch him?! :)

CelstialNavigation · 19/02/2012 20:35

Manuka Honey (at proper strenght). Costs an eye-watering amount for honey. Clears cold/flu/chest infection faster.

skybluepearl · 19/02/2012 20:44

if he has a chest infection then no you can't vary the loudness. it is what it is.

Nagoo · 19/02/2012 20:51

My granny is the loudest sneezer in the world. It's incredible.

And she always says 'bastard' after, so she can't enjoy it.

I had assumed everyone could choose to sneeze quietly, but obviously not.

Coughing I don't think you can, eventually it needs to shift, and your vocal cords are right there aren't they?
