AIBU re Take Me Out

I've been here long enough now, feel ready to start a thread in AIBU. Was going to post in Telly Addicts but thought more people would have an opinion here.

So... Take Me Out (the TV show)... I used to find it quite funny in a sad way, but watching it tonight I am squirming and finding it bordering on offensive. Not sure why but it is not very positive portrayal of women I think.

So.... Am I being unreasonable to find this show offensive? Am I taking life a bit too seriously? Or do I have a point?

hocus I dont want to marry him, just to go to tenerife on a free night out.

Look. Look. He picked the leggy blonde. Hes a free spirit, isnt he?

troisgarcons · 18/02/2012 21:12

the girls stay for the whole series unless they are picked. the picked one gets replaced.

sunshineoutdoors · 18/02/2012 21:12

I really dislike the - and I have known at least one person in rl who does this - probably perfectly bright females who think that putting on a bit of a thick, giggly persona makes them endearing..... what happens when you want to be taken seriously? You have marketed yourself as a dizzy airhead... no one is actually like that are they? are they??

It was the same with Blind Date regarding exposure

There are a few celebs that went on it

Can't remember who they are though Grin

OneLieIn · 18/02/2012 21:17

What a cliche

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 18/02/2012 21:17

Amanda Holden was on Blind Date wasn't she?

mayorquimby · 18/02/2012 21:18

"Do the men want a girlfriend or do they want to get a bit of exposure on TV?"

Mate of mine went on the Irish one.
He's a bit of an attention whore and he wanted to set himself up with many more opportunities for casual sex.

sunshineoutdoors · 18/02/2012 21:19

Think some of the blokes on this also play the 'I'm well thick' card too.

and wasnt Duncan from Blue? or maybe I imagined that, he's been on everything else

mycatsaysach · 18/02/2012 21:20

i love the show - not offensive at all

hocuspontas · 18/02/2012 21:21

I've just switched over to The Gossip and the girls are even more air-brained than I thought possible. Can't stop watching though...

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 18/02/2012 21:23

I agree, not offensive as everyone participating is well aware what they are signing up for and most (if not all) have other motives for going on.

It is offensive that the women on there are so happy to show themselves to be stupid, just to get ahead in the TV world and/or get a free holiday.

But then, that's what most of the men are doing too! That horrid man from a week or 2 back, that insulted all the women but still ended up on a date - well, he has just got married and was allegedly engaged at the time of the show AND was a male model who wanted to further his career.

He was foul, in both personality and looks. Too many teeth

Laambkins · 18/02/2012 21:43

It is uncomfortable to watch. Twatty blokes and women that say, 'ouuuf' Horrid

Panfriedstardust · 18/02/2012 21:51

Going against a very strong tide here...but I quite like it.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 18/02/2012 21:54

Panfried get ye to Nethuns NOW!

Wink

I'm now watching the thing on ITV2, don't tell anyone

Panfriedstardust · 18/02/2012 22:04

so am I

I don't think the women come across as dipsy at all. Highly critical, picky and in control more like..

oldaninpurple · 18/02/2012 22:07

As the delightful Paddy would say, No likey..... No lighty! You know what to do ladies!

warmandwooly · 18/02/2012 22:16

It's a guilty pleasure. If there was something decent on the other stations I would watch that. bemons lack of films on tv wish the beeb would put casualty on a long hiatus. It's boring and predictable. Spend on the money on a decent american import!

HoneyandHaycorns · 18/02/2012 22:25

I'm all in favour of guilty pleasures but what disappointed me tonight was that it wasn't even a pleasure.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 18/02/2012 22:28

agreed, this evening's offering was pleasure-free!

Panfriedstardust · 18/02/2012 22:29

oh there is nothing guilty-pleasure about it. It sort of does what it says upfront. The poseurs get rumbled toute suite and the women get to dish on why the bloke isn't up to scratch. That male model was a hoot.

cantgetlaidingermany · 19/02/2012 18:17

YANBU...it's shite on every level
