To sit here thinking about how ridiculous we all are?

Society I mean.

Think of us, Humans as simple creatures. Think way back before cars and houses etc - when we were at our most primative. We ate, slept and reproduced like all other animals. But then as we "evolved" a bunch of our species decided they would be "in charge" and that the rest of us would follow.

Now think of the world today. We rush off to "work" each morning because we need those little bits of paper which we call "currency" in which we can exchange for our dwellings, our food - all the basics we need. Our young are shoved into a "school" for 6 hours a day because they "need" to be "educated" because the ones in charge say so. We HAVE to wear clothes because the ones in charge say so. We HAVE to pay for a fucking LICENSE to watch a "tv" because the ones in charge say so.

And TV - why do we sit there staring at a little device for hours at a time? It's so ridiculous. The whole world is so ridiculous.

Can you imagine a dog laying out in the sun and it's mate saying "woah steady on Fido, you'll burn out here" and the dog replying "yes, I'm intentionally trying to burn myself, don't worry."

It's all a bit weird when you sit and think about it.

The funny thing is, even if one of us decided we didn't want to be a part of this "modern" society and instead wanted to run around naked, killing our own food and sleeping in a cave - we wouldn't be "allowed" because that isn't what the ones in charge want for us.

It's about time people realised how insignificant we really are.

Well, I'm happy.

Attractive name you have btw.

WorraLiberty · 18/02/2012 15:25

Yeah but there are always communes I suppose.

whirlingbetsy · 18/02/2012 15:27

Has someone just started a first year sociology degree?

Kayano · 18/02/2012 15:27

Aren't ants the same? [nothelpful]

Abra1d · 18/02/2012 15:28

Thing is, if you became ill in your non-modern society and everyone else had taken the same route there would be no MRI scans, no clever new drugs, no motors or machines to take you to hospital and keep you breathing. No books to read while you recuperated. No telephones or email to use to tell your family that you were feeling better or not.

belgo · 18/02/2012 15:28

We HAVE to wear clothes because the ones in charge say so.

er no. I wear clothes because I'd be pretty chilly otherwise.

Catsmamma · 18/02/2012 15:31

oh yes...I'd definitely go for the full time naked aspect. Nothing quite so flattering as that blue hypothermic tinge.

FecalVomit · 18/02/2012 15:31

Belgo, so you often walk around with sheets wrapped around you then? because if it was simply a case of keeping warm - that's what you'd do.

Abra - that is a good point.

No sociology degree, I hated sociology, certainly couldn't do a degree in it, how fucking boring and pointless would that be.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 18/02/2012 15:33
Hmm
Sposh · 18/02/2012 15:34

These are the kinds of things I used to think about whilst taking LSD. When I was 19.

nickelDorritt · 18/02/2012 15:38

I know what you mean.

reading's fun though.

GrimmaTheNome · 18/02/2012 15:39

Go on then, try wearing sheets while you're foraging and catching your rabbits. Grin

You don't need to pay for a TV license and sit there staring it it BTW. There is no law that says it is mandatory to own a TV. That's entirely your choice. You don't have to send your kids to school.

Why don't you try dropping out of civilization? This time of year would be good for the experiment.

whirlingbetsy · 18/02/2012 15:42

How would it be boring and pointless? Sociological theories answer almost every question you've just posed!

belgo · 18/02/2012 15:44

I think you've just contradicted your point - I am perfectly free to go out wearing just a sheet - and the 'ones in charge' would not arrest me.

JustHecate · 18/02/2012 15:46

You're right.

And at the end of it we die.

But what's the alternative? I could throw off all my clothes and find a cave to sleep in, emerging only to throw a spear at someone's dog (lunch) but I'd simply be bundled into a rather snug jacket fastened up the back and provided alternative accomodation.

And yes. We, individually, are totally insignificant.

as a species though, we have done incredible damage to this world - wiped out entire species, killed or will kill more of our own species than all the natural disasters and illnesses put together probably and we're working on making the actual planet incapable of sustaining us.

However. One day soon (in geological terms) mankind will be gone. Dead and forgotten and the world will simply carry on without us. Everything we did will be forgotten, everything we built will disappear and the universe will never have known a thing about any of it.

So what is the point? We don't matter to anyone else (beyond maybe family and friends and not always then). We don't matter to the universe and when we're all gone nothing anywhere will give a shit. There is no point other than to make the most of your life while you've got it. The very pointlessness of our existance makes it even more important that individually we live and make our life have meaning.

FecalVomit · 18/02/2012 15:47

Can you imagine Fido sat there gawping at another dog with a stupid grin on it's face and Tyson coming up behind him saying "why are you staring and Bronson?" and Fido replying "oh well he's just amazing isn't he! look how he runs! I'd love to be as good a dog as he is!"

I can't drop out of civilisation, my rabbit hunting skills are shit because I was never taught this stuff as a young un. I could go veggie I suppose.

marshmallowpies · 18/02/2012 15:47

The TV licence pays for the BBC which in my opinion is the best quality TV in the world.

I prefer to pay a licence to have 2 major TV channels and several digital ones with no ads in.

Perhaps you only watch the commercial channels and watch no BBC, but I think most people would be hard pressed to say there is NOTHING at all worth watching on the BBC.

I'm proud of the BBC and I'm proud to be a licence payer.

FecalVomit · 18/02/2012 15:49

Hecate, I have to say that is the best post I have ever read on here. (and no I'm not being sarcastic).

OP posts:
FecalVomit · 18/02/2012 15:50

BBC is shit. Then again, I very rarely watch telly anyway - hence my irritance at the stupid license.

OP posts:
JustHecate · 18/02/2012 15:52

Really? That's very kind of you.

I have to be honest.

Typing it depressed the crap out of me. Grin

FecalVomit · 18/02/2012 15:54

Yes it depressed me a bit too Grin but you're totally right, we have to make the most of the little time we have because one day it will all be gone and whatever we were will mean nothing to the world. It kinda makes you want to get up and DO something, anything! very motivational! Grin

Birdsgottafly · 18/02/2012 15:58

OP you would have to pin point a time. I think that you will find that human life has always had some structure.

Also before this thread gets quite insulting lets remember that we learnt alot from civilisations that were then slaughtered. Early Mathematicians and Astrologers etc.

The Egyptians had central heating and indoor plumbing etc.

Lets not forget all of the people who are taking the Mayans word that the world will end, this year, because the calender ended.

I don't know why you are comparing us to animals, our brains are very different. The animals that have intelligence, do things that we do, play are promiscious, have a hierarchy, etc

Yama · 18/02/2012 15:59

One day none of us will exist. Sometimes that thought depresses me but mostly it cheers me up.

Birdsgottafly · 18/02/2012 16:00

Just to add OP, thanks to our society, you could learn how to catch and prepare any animal.

In fact, you can learn how to do anything you want via books or the internet.

quirrelquarrel · 18/02/2012 16:02

I never buy this "ones in charge" rubbish. We are in charge, just held captive by our weaknesses and overindulgence. Nothing too sinister....oo but maybe I should pop off and read some Marx?
