...Rochdale.
Good God it's a god forsaken place. There appears to be half a dozen payday loan shos, a few poundland things and some mobile 'phone shops.
It's got so bad that even maccy d's has shut down.
It's only redeeming feature is that Gabbots farm is still clinging on.

Rochdale sounds like any town though.... They all have their history and an odd gallery or two!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 17/02/2012 22:33

I have only one word to say and that's Castleford. Pound stretcher, home bargains, and if you want to go really upmarket, wilkos. During the day tumbleweed blows accross the pedestrian precinct, occasionally snagging on a pile of vomit from the previous nights revelry. By night the neon strips flash, stutter then flash again, pizza, kebab, balti, Chinese, and just for good measure another pizza place. Drunks meander aimlessly down the road in search of a) a woman b) a taxi c) some personality.
It's an amazing place and I'm so glad I don't live there any more......

Camborne

Goldrill · 17/02/2012 22:34

Keswick. You can't park, you can't move on the pavements and it's gradually descending into poundland hell. And if it's not made of fleece they don't sell it.

northernmonkey · 17/02/2012 22:34

Great minds chuffingcunt Grin
I'm so glad I don't live there anymore

moogster1a · 17/02/2012 22:34

Have you ever been to Rochdale OP? Didn't think so.
Yep. went today. Live in Whitworth so it's my local " shopping centre". I agree the town hall's nice ( was there yesterday at the register's) but the rest is a hole. there were another 3 shops having closing down sales today.
Am impressed and intrigued that you thought I'd seen it on TV. No idea what sort of programme would be set in Rochdale centre. A British version of the Walking Dead maybe?

Oooops Blush I spelt your name wrong Blush sorry

Slough.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/02/2012 22:36

I went to Alloa recently and though it's not the worst town centre it just seems empty.
They've got a big Asda,Tesco,Aldi,Lidl, a Morrisons and BM just outside. Poundland and Iceland.

So many empty shops and a huge number of charity shops (I presume they get cheaper rents if a shop is empty but could be lying)

Since all the big shops arrived it's just knocked the stuffing out of it.
I used to live there in the mid 70s

CharlieLimaHotel · 17/02/2012 22:36

Saggy I second you about Colchester. Not nice. Especially on a Saturday or any other night. Bleurgh.

sabire · 17/02/2012 22:38

Thornton Heath.

4 wig shops, 8 hairdressers/barbers, 3 betting shops and more junk food outlets than you can shake a stick at. And a giant, hideous Tesco.

Grim.

MissMarjoribanks · 17/02/2012 22:39

It was on the telly this morning, BBC Breakfast News. It was about the town centre.

If you're from Whitworth, you're clearly a parochial nimby. You see, we can all do sweeping generalisations.

D0oinMeCleanin · 17/02/2012 22:39

Billingham is dire. We went there a few days ago for ice skating. We looked for somewhere to eat after the rink was closed. There isn't a a MaccyD's Blush there is nothing bar gangly teens dangling hockey skates around their necks.

maras2 · 17/02/2012 22:40

I love the song by Mike Harding that goes 'It's hard being a cowboy in Rochdale, the spurs don't seem to fit on with my clogs'.The last words of the last verse were 'Alsation dogs'.I'm easy to please and don't dislike anywhere really.

CuffingChunt · 17/02/2012 22:40

northernmonkey I will let you off Smile

smallmole · 17/02/2012 22:41

Any-moor for Spennymoor?

Actually, I've never been, but my dad always used to put the accent on and say that when we saw the Spennymoor bus when I was little and it's obviously stayed with me...

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 17/02/2012 22:42

Ooooooo - CREWE!!!

I genuinely detest the place. Again, down to experiences whilst working there and being engaged to the biggest fuckwit that ever drew breath (born and bred in Crewe)

It's just so grim.

moogster1a · 17/02/2012 22:42

Sorry, too posh to have the TV on in the morning so didn't see it.
What's nimby about not wanting to see a depressing town centre full of empty shops?
