To have given DD cheerios for dinner?

NickNacks · 16/02/2012 18:37

Just got back from the doctors where he confirmed ANOTHER ear infection. She hasn't eaten her dinner and needs to eat before her antibiotics.

She's 18 months so I figure something is better than nothing so I made her some Cheerios which she has wolfed down.

MIL just called to see how she got on at soca and I gave her the latest, and she followed it up with a comment about nutritious food being what little ones need when they're ill. What was I supposed to have done?

Do you honestly insist they eat what you've served when they're ill or are you with me thinking that whatever you can get in them is a bonus??

Whatever you can get in them Smile

StealthPolarBear · 16/02/2012 18:40

Yes, definitely. Hope the ear infection pops soon and the pressure relives

Shutupanddrive · 16/02/2012 18:40

Of course YANBU, give yourself a break! Give her what she wants when she's ill. The main thing is that is eating something

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 16/02/2012 18:40

YANBU - your MIL should keep her thoughts to herself. You are right a little bit of something plain that she fancies is better than trying to force a big dinner down her.

imoanruby · 16/02/2012 18:41

YANBU when they are poorly getting them to eat anything is a bonus, something is better than nothing. My dcs would eat cheerios for dinner every night given the chance! Hope she feels better soon.

cricketballs · 16/02/2012 18:43

if you have a look at the nutrition advice on the box; I'm sure it would be very difficult to prepare a normal meal with the same amount of vitamins etc so you have followed the advice of giving your DD a nutritious meal when she is ill Grin

ddubsgirl · 16/02/2012 18:43

if thats what she wanted, its not like its every night, many a time mine have eaten ceral for tea, something is better than nothing, tonight kids only want a sarnie, they been picking all day, were up late this morning so had late brekkie and late lunch so didnt want a big dinner.

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 16/02/2012 18:43

Cereal is fortified with iron and other vitamins anyway so tell her to put that in her pipe and smoke it Grin

YANBU, I would have, and indeed have in the past, done the same thing!

Threeprinces · 16/02/2012 18:44

Haha Cherrios are very nutritious!!

GrownUp2012 · 16/02/2012 18:46

I do it even when DD isn't ill sometimes if that's what she's asked for. She loves Cheerios and teatime is always a bit of a fight here. Sod what anyone thinks.

NickNacks · 16/02/2012 18:46

Thanks everyone! She's already a bit better and it has popped stealth unfortunately that was what made me take her as I wrongly assumed it was teething.

YANBU - best wishes for a speedy recovery for your DD :)

GandTiceandaSprout · 16/02/2012 18:47

Think my toddler would love that for his dinner.
And it was far better than the nuggets & potato waffle he had for his tonight Blush

NickNacks · 16/02/2012 18:47

Will tell her how nutritious the Cheerios are if she mentions it again! :)

I have given mine weetabix when the need has arisen

needs must sometimes

bumbleymummy · 16/02/2012 19:37

YABU for buying Cheerios because they're a Nestlé product Wink

I know where you're coming from but with things like ear infections and colds I would tend to avoid dairy so I would probably go with a big bowl of cut up fruit or scrambled eggs and toast or something. Sorry! Hope she feels better soon.

NickNacks · 16/02/2012 19:42

What's the reason behind avoiding dairy? She still has a bedtime bottle which I can't see me persuading her she can't have as it's a source of comfort up her.

Ps nestle make all the best cereals!!

coraltoes · 16/02/2012 20:06

My dd sometimes has porridge for dinner when unwell. It is filling, nutritious and comforting. Tink about when you are sick...do you have poached fish with veg or seek comfort in some biscuits and tea? I hope she feels better soon. she has gone to bed on a tummy full of food and with a loving mum!

coraltoes · 16/02/2012 20:07

Dairy sometimes linked to increase in mucus. Like you say, when kids still drink so much milk it is daft to cut it out!

bumbleymummy · 16/02/2012 20:15

As coral said, it's to do with mucus production but if she's getting comfort from her bottle it's a bit mean to take it away!

My DH would agree with you about the cereal btw. I swear he would hide cinnamon Grahams somewhere in the house if he could Grin

Lambzig · 16/02/2012 20:52

I would just be pleased she ate something. My DD is on antibiotics this week and I am told they should be three times a day with food and its been murder. Are Lindt bunnies food? Cheerios seems incredibly nutritious to me.

NickNacks · 16/02/2012 21:26

Lindt bunnies are def food when it comes to dick children! If my Cheerios count then you can have chocolate. :)
