To prefer the original Dolly Parton version of "I will always love you"

I'm not disputing that Whitney was an amazing talent but every time I hear her version I pine for the delicate melancholy of the Dolly original.

OP posts:

Edam I was thinking the same earlier. Any x factor contestant who has identified themselves as a diva end every sung phrase with an extended warble.

achangeisasgoodasarest · 13/02/2012 19:05

Dolly's version is beautiful. Had all the soul sucked out of it by Whitney Houston IMO.

flatbellyfella · 13/02/2012 19:24

I like Dollys best but don't hate Whitney s version.

laptopdancer · 13/02/2012 19:27

im not even going to read the thread to answer this one OP

I totally agree....YANBU I totally prefer Dolly's version and alllllwaaaaaays have

Correctmeifiamwrong · 13/02/2012 19:30

Dolly. Absolutely. Whitney couldn't half belt it out though.

Correctmeifiamwrong · 13/02/2012 19:30

My own version really sucks tough.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 13/02/2012 19:31

Dolly dolly dolly dolly!
Yanbu, dolly far superior and I get so irritated when it is referred to as whitney's song.
Dolly's music featured quite a bit at our wedding Smile

oikopolis · 13/02/2012 20:00

YANBU. No-one touches Dolly! She is in a class all her own.

edam · 13/02/2012 20:20

dh thinks Dolly actually wrote it, rather than merely being the original singer. Is he right?

PaintedToenails · 13/02/2012 20:22

Love the Dolly version, always hated the Whitney version.

Dolly has never made a bad song, IMO.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 13/02/2012 20:22

Neither. I detest all versions of that song with every fibre of my being.

oikopolis · 13/02/2012 20:24

yes she did write it.
she has actually made her fortune through unusually prolific songwriting. I read somewhere that she writes upwards of 100 songs a year.

edam · 13/02/2012 20:25

I had no idea. My respect for her has just gone up several dozen notches.

edam · 13/02/2012 20:26

(Stand By Your Man still one of the worst songs of all time, though. Sorry Dolly.)

oikopolis · 13/02/2012 20:28

Stand By Your Man was written & performed by Tammy Wynette, not Dolly

mrsjay · 13/02/2012 20:30

I too Heart DOlly she is amazing she is my guilty pleasure And her version is the best very sweet , Im not into all that warbley singing i wasnt really a WHitney fan anyway,

mrsjay · 13/02/2012 20:31

DOlly is a very sucessful woman and she did it all her own way , writes most of her songs she is just an amazing,

WannaBeWildCosMyLifesSoTame · 13/02/2012 20:32

The Dolly version is one of my favourite songs ever, so heartfelt and beautiful, guaranteed to make me blub!

I wasn't a big Whitney fan although her songs remind me of good times and bad when I was young because I'm of that age :) - in fact I downloaded a few yesterday along with millions of other people probably. I really don't like her version of IWALY though, it's so bland and unemotional and screechy compared with the original and I've no idea how it was No 1 for so long - annoys me when people credit her with it as well, having no idea that there even is an original, let alone that it is so much better.

Helenfellows32 · 13/02/2012 20:33

tis odd though as dolly wrote it for her first manager, who discovered her. she got a better record deal and left. much better version.

ps not a mad fan just listened to an interview with her on the radio.

edam · 13/02/2012 20:33

Oh, OK, glad to hear it's not her fault!

mrsjay · 13/02/2012 20:35

I think Dolly wanted to do it on her own and the guy who she did a TV show with wouldnt let her out of her contract or perform her own songs he didnt think a pretty little lady could go it alone , I watched a whole dolly night on tv once followed by a concert Ive read her autibiography too ,

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/02/2012 22:28

I've never really liked Whitney Houston. I'm sorry she is dead, but truly, most of her songs make me want to rip my ears off. Dolly is MUCH better.

leakyR · 13/02/2012 22:32

YANBU the Dolly version is the original and by far the best.

Clayhead · 13/02/2012 22:35

Dolly's version is FAR better.

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/02/2012 22:37

Yanbu. I have posted on this subject more than once. Dolly's version is a beautiful simple love song (makes me cry), it was never meant to be a stonking great power ballad.
