To prefer the original Dolly Parton version of "I will always love you"

I'm not disputing that Whitney was an amazing talent but every time I hear her version I pine for the delicate melancholy of the Dolly original.

I much prefer Dolly's one to the horrendous warbling Whitney. To me Dolly has her own unique voice and Whitney was just yet another singer with an ok voice that I wouldn't of been able to pick out from amongst all the other warblers

justhavintheone · 13/02/2012 18:17

i love dollys version also, she makes it sound very sad, but dolly can do no wrong in my eyes.

mrssmooth · 13/02/2012 18:22

Yay! Some "closet" Dolly love at last! Much prefer her version of the song, as do my dds - always makes me well up though! Mind you, lots of Dolly's songs do that to me anyway ...

DavidaCottonmouth · 13/02/2012 18:23

I have both on my iPod and like them equally.

catwithflowers · 13/02/2012 18:24

Dolly's version is beautiful and has been one of my favourite songs for years. I was listening to it today in the car - so full of emotion and much better than Whitney's Smile

I prefer the Dolly version, have it on my music catalogue on my phone.

The Whitney version reminds me of my teenage years. Teenage angst from my cousin who used to cry along with it, because she fancied a boy at school and he didn't know she existed... sob sob sob etc.

I've always preferred Dollys' version. Whitney's version just goes on wayyyyy too long - why use one note when you can squeeze in 210 warbly ones eh?

MrsKitty · 13/02/2012 18:38

Yanbu at all! I love the Dolly version (as does Ds aged 5 Grin). Generally guaranteed to make me cry, especially during the 'talkie' bit ("Ah hope...lahf treats you kahnd...and ah hope...you hahve all....you evah dreamed of" )

Goolash · 13/02/2012 18:41

Yanbu

PeneloPeePitstop · 13/02/2012 18:43

YANBU.
Whitters' version is a bit warbly for me. Dolly's is far more tuneful.
There are some of Whitney's songs I really like - one moment in time for example.

Lovecat · 13/02/2012 18:44

YANBU. Dolly's is so much more tender and tremulous. Can't bear WH I'm afraid, sad that she's dead, but not a fan of her or her music.

ParsleyTheLioness · 13/02/2012 18:44

Dolly for me too. Always said so.

Mrsfluff · 13/02/2012 18:45

Dolly's version is by far and away the best- much more subtle & heartfelt. I love Dolly Grin

CalamityKate · 13/02/2012 18:47

I like both. They're just do different, aren't they?

Dolly's is sort of fragile and heartbroken.

Whitney's is sort of defiant..... "I'LL NEVER GET OVER YOU! SO FUCKING THERE!!!"

CalamityKate · 13/02/2012 18:47

so

paulapantsdown · 13/02/2012 18:50

well WH had some pipes on her and could belt out a tune no doubt, but the original is far more poignant and meaningful - Miss Parton HAS NO EQUAL.

shagmundfreud · 13/02/2012 18:50

YANBU!

Dolly Parton is a goddess. I think she's an amazing musician.

StarlightDicKenzie · 13/02/2012 18:53

Dolly, of course, but One Moment in Time is a classic.

SuePurblybilt · 13/02/2012 18:56

Dolly for sure.
I blame Whitney's version for the start of all that warbling around a note nonsense.

edam · 13/02/2012 19:00

Dolly all the way. Whitney just encouraged generations of god-awful people who can't sing to try to belt out tunes while warbling around the note. Was bad enough when Whitney did it, and I have to admit she could sing (wish she'd left Dolly's song alone though, the Whitney version is fecking painful).

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 13/02/2012 19:00

Dolly. Definately.

Tanith · 13/02/2012 19:01

Dolly for me, too - love her voice and her music.

I seem to remember someone once being jailed for playing WH's version non stop at full volume and driving her neighbours to distraction.

FriendofDorothy · 13/02/2012 19:02

Don't Diss Dolly!

I adore her version. So much more reflective. Yes Whitney had a great voice, but Dolly's version stamps all over hers!
