Is play dough one of the most awful things ever invented?

My dd 4 has it all over the floor in tiny little bits, on her clothes and we constantly have to buy her more as I find it stuffed in places and then gone hard. It also turns alovely colour once its mixed all together which happens often within minutes of new pots being opened.

It is one of her favourite things to play with.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 10/02/2012 18:02

although hope your DD is ok

Correctmeifiamwrong · 10/02/2012 18:03

Much as - love playmobile... Its all those teensy weensy little bits that get lost on the carpet then either end up embedded in your feet or up the hoover that drive me nuts.

Bath crayons. Who knew they can be indellible?

If you like the smell of Play Doh, you could always treat yourself:

Check out the whole range (anyone for "Eau de Dirt"?! Confused ):

I am clearly wierd.

I love playdoh and I love glitter. DS goes mental for glittery playdoh.

Mind you I don't have carpets!

FeijoaVodkaPlease · 10/02/2012 18:19

It's never coming in my house. DCs can play with it at friends houses or nursery where I don't have to go any where near the vcile stuff.

CremeEggThief · 10/02/2012 18:32

Clay and plasticine are much, much worse. I am very sensitive to texture (you know the type who shudders in disgust when a baked bean or two land on the worktop? That's me.), but I have always found the texture of play dough rather soothing, especially the homemade type. Also with homemade, you tend to have 1 colour on the go, so that solves the problem of mixed colours, IMO.

Reesie · 10/02/2012 18:43

How can you not love playdough? I make the stuff at home - its ridiculously easy to do. The children will play with it for ages.

I agree though moonsand is from the dark side.

HappyMummyOfOne · 10/02/2012 18:46

MrsDobalina, I must be weird too. Love playdoh, glitter, paint and moonsand.

Playdough is great and smells fab too.

EnjoyResponsibly · 10/02/2012 18:49

I would like to bury the Moon sand inventor up to his (don't look at me like Hmm, you know it's a man) heck in the evil-doing stuff.

EnjoyResponsibly · 10/02/2012 18:51

Heck = neck, bloody iknowbetter-pad

GrahamTribe · 10/02/2012 19:38

I'm on the "I love the smell" bench. YABU. :)

W0rmy · 11/02/2012 00:52

I agree with enjoy I'd like to bury him right up beyond his heck...

Try jumping clay.

There is a website.

onwardandupwards · 11/02/2012 01:14

Really stupid question...(sorry)...how do you make playdough?

Smurfy1 · 11/02/2012 01:29

Basic ingredient ratios:
2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)

food coloring (liquid, powder, or unsweetened drink mix)
scented oils

And just keep stirring believe me it does thicken

KittyFane · 11/02/2012 09:17

DD loved it, my DM loved buying it, I hated it.
It got everywhere and DM was asked politely to keep it at her house if she insisted on buying it!

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 11/02/2012 09:24

LOVE Playdoh make it myself for DD. I do however hate Moondough with a passion. I still have stains on my sofa from that socalled stain free crap.

molly3478 · 11/02/2012 09:26

Why dont you make it then it is way cheaper? I make it for DD and make it at work and the kids love it.

onwardandupwards · 11/02/2012 23:10

Thank you, am going to make some tomorrow!

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 11/02/2012 23:11

The stuff you buy is shit, goes in to horrid wee crumbs after a while. I make it and its so much better to make stuff with and doesn't crumble like that so no mess. And if you use all value ingredients its cheap.

MrsBeakman · 11/02/2012 23:25

I was a bit put off play doh when i read that children with thread worms scratch themselves and the worms get under their finger nails and then the children play with play doh at toddler groups/nursery and the thread worms get into the play doh and get passed on. Confused

MrsBeakman · 11/02/2012 23:28

(Think it's the eggs that get passed on.)

fullofregrets · 11/02/2012 23:30

Sand is also really bad for threadworm egg contamination. Just thought I'd share.
Another negative for moon sand and play doh there then.
