Schoo run, run in with a mum

Madeyemoodysmum · 10/02/2012 11:45

I am feeling a bit guilty now but at the time I was raging Aibu?

School run, snow on rd etc. At zebra crossing with lights with 2dcs and another mum also 2 dcs. One of which is only 2yo.
We had pressed lights and the beeper was going for us to cross A car ignored the lights, jumping them and then turned into the school. Fuming I speed up on foot and knock on drivers window as she was letting her dc out of car

I said "do you realise you just jumped the lights?" in a cross but not over aggressive tone. She was apologetic so I reply" please can u be more careful?" and then as she apologised again said thanks and grumbled off.

I'm not normally confrontAtional but it was icy and right next to school. Bad enough a normal driver but she was a mum if school too.

Was I unreasonable to speak to her. It's a big school and I did not recognise her but feel guilty for lamping off at another mum

Thanks.

I think you were the picture of restraint.

AndiMac · 10/02/2012 11:49

Agree with AlistairSim. Everyone in the school would have heard me tearing the mum a new one. YANBU.

scuzy · 10/02/2012 11:49

YA most definately NBU ... in fact showed great restraint. wagon could have killed someone!

MsHighwater · 10/02/2012 11:50

YWNBU. She apologised. That is probably what threw you.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 10/02/2012 11:58

You were a bit cross Hmm and said 'please' into the bargain Shock ? Where I'm from, the driver would have thought you were flirting.

WorraLiberty · 10/02/2012 12:01

Is that it? Confused

I read through fully expecting a different ending.

Of course YANBU, I can't think why anyone would think you were.

cheesesarnie · 10/02/2012 12:03

you were too nice Grin
you pointed out how dangerously she had driven, she apologised.
hopefully next time she'll think after being confronted about it.
don't worry about it.

MissMogwi · 10/02/2012 12:05

YWNBU. Don't worry about it now, you put her straight.

You were more restrained than my mum.
I still remember at least 25 years on, someone doing the same; mum whacked their car with her brolly and went apeshit. BlushGrin

TimothyClaypoleLover · 10/02/2012 12:06

YANBU and I have done similar when faced with inconsiderate drivers.

Pendeen · 10/02/2012 12:07

If she drove over a crossing when the lights were on red then YADNBU. A modest stiff fine and 3 -6 points on her licence would not be an unreasonable reward for such careless driving.

However, as far as this goes: "... Bad enough a normal driver but she was a mum if school too. ..." I'm afraid the two are mutually exclusive for several mums I see every day on our school run.

It seems that once their DC are safely in the car they don't care how they drive so long as they can get where I'm going.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 10/02/2012 12:08

Good for you. She won't do it again.
YDWNBU.

porcamiseria · 10/02/2012 12:10

erm, move on?

OrmIrian · 10/02/2012 12:18

You told her off. She apologised. Job done.

EssexGurl · 10/02/2012 12:21

Not quite sure why you think you have done the wrong thing here? It happens all the time at the crossing near our school. Council took away the lolly pop man and have said that only if there is a fatality will he be reinstated. So up to parents to try to monitor. I think you did the right thing and did it very well, no aggression.

Oh, and the worst people for this I find are the ones with kids in the cars .... being a mum has NOTHING to do with it ...

valiumredhead · 10/02/2012 12:25

In theory you did the right thing but she could've turned really nasty, you have no idea how she would react. I think I would've taken a note of the reg plate and reported her if I felt that strongly about it, there's no way would take it upon myself to go and 'tell her off.'

MonsterBookOfTysons · 10/02/2012 12:27

Yanbu! Our school had letters to all the drivers the other day warning that Community support officers would be patrolling after a driver went straight over the zebra crossing when people were waiting.

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 10/02/2012 12:29

On a slight tangent...why put lights on a zebra crossing? What an odd thing to do. It's like a crossing near me, they have a set of traffic lights and a lollypop man. Surely, one or the other?

Oggy · 10/02/2012 12:35

Non issue. Even the driver didn't think you were being unreasonable as she apologised so why the need to come on here to check?

sue52 · 10/02/2012 12:39

If I had a momentary lack of concentration whilst driving in similar conditions, I would be grateful that someone had called my attention to it. Hopefully this will make her a better and more thoughtful driver.

Pendeen · 10/02/2012 12:41

It was probably a pelican crossing.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 10/02/2012 12:42

"why put lights on a zebra crossing?"

Doesn't that just mean a 'pelican crossing'. And they put lights because idiots like the car-driver in the story ignore belisha beacons and lollipop wardens. Great big traffic lights are the only thing that stops them.... normally.

shrinkingnora · 10/02/2012 12:53

I misread that you sped up to her on foot as you had knocked with your foot which is what I would have done

jojane · 10/02/2012 13:59

Happened to us once, lights were on red with green man on so started crossing with pfb in buggy and some stupid bunt in a 4x4 sped through narrowly missing us. Dh was fuming, took her license plate and rang the police. To make matters worse whilst he was on phone to them we crossed a zebra crossing and someone else sped through that while we were crossing!!! Police spoke to her and she said "she hadn't seen the red light" not sure if anything else happened but hopefully getting a phone all from the police will make sure she's more careful in future.

aldiwhore · 10/02/2012 14:11

YWNBU.

From her reaction I think she was not either. (Obviously U for jumping lights, but I've done it - its a mistake, one that could have awful consequences but she's not a 'stupid bint' to make a mistake)

You did the right thing OP, and hopefully she was mortified and genuinely sorry.
