...when they are refering to a football manager not the prime bloody minister. There are many sports with managers.

Also why is it headlines, even on R 4.

But you could say the same of any other leisure or cultural activity. You could equally say art or music was an "international language" but these rarely makes the top spot on the news whereas football does the whole time. There are so many other activities, hobbies, interests, theatre, music, religion, charities, the list is endless. There's nothing special about football to make it deserve more coverage than any other leisure pursuit - but it constantly hogs the top news spots and money whereas theatres and libraries are closing before our eyes.

I don't think the wag stuff is news either, but that kind of stuff doesn't tend to get headline on Radio 4 or bbc website which is where I get my news so I have never had cause to be irritated by it.

cbem - you seem as though you are a 'football fan' and v keen on working class culture, sense of pride.... etc but that doesn't mean it isn't just a game. It is! And it isn't important - fun, exciting maybe but not actually important.

Not saying these other things should be headline news often either - but other leisure/cultural activities are no less valid than football, they just don't shout as loudly. Headline news should be about really outstanding and unusual events, which cannot be the case so very often with football, can it? Confused

no not all deaths are newsworthy. But the ones that are deserve to be higher than some ball-kicking.

I couldnt believe it was top headline on BBC news, putting the story about children being shot in Syria as less important.

Also we live in the UK, a story about the England football manager is of little interest to the other three countries making up the UK.

This country is the UK, The BBC news is broadcast primarily for the people of Britain not just one section of it , gggrrrrrrrrr.

Usual bias towards England in the british media

I do think it's because sport was traditionally a bloke thing.
Fashion probably raises similar revenues and affects a wider cross section of the populace but because it's seen as 'womens pages' it would be laughable to give it the same breadth of coverage.

My only exposure to football fans has been in house share and the enjoyment of the game seemed mainly to involve beer, shouting whaaaaaa, doing fist pumping gestures and swearing at the television/ref/opposition. All very aggressive and primal.

It did not break down any barriers with me.
