...when they are refering to a football manager not the prime bloody minister. There are many sports with managers.

Also why is it headlines, even on R 4.

Football isn't played in every school!

Cricket gets as much coverage, it is on every bloody day when it is cricket season.

They have different seasons. Except now football doesn't stop in the way that it used to, i am not a fan, btw. I don't see how you have lived long enough to be old enough to use the internet but this has passed you by.

Birdsgottafly · 09/02/2012 15:28

Lady- it isn't now, it used to be. We have extended teaching on all subjects.

It is a long standing tradition. They stopped fighting to play football in the trenches on Christmas day, it was the one thing that the men had in common.

LadyMontdore · 09/02/2012 15:38

I am fairly sure that football has never been taught in most girls schools.

Agree with BB - in this particular episode the resignation is rooted in our national reaction to two particualr cases of blatant racism, being played out in the context of the most popular spectator sport in the UK. If it was just about anotehr footie manager leaving his post it would be a big yawn. But it isn't that.

squeakytoy · 09/02/2012 15:42

Football is played in girls schools. :)

StealthPolarBear · 09/02/2012 15:59

Op yanbu. Our local news tends to be something like this:

There has been a FOOTBALL match, we lost, we was robbed. Hear what some shouty man has to say about it next. David Beckham is upset. The region is in mourning. Quote from some other shouty, overreactinf man. The spolice have thanked fans for thru good behaviour (what are they, preschoolers?) as only 200 were arrested for throwing things at the players. In other news, 5 people have died...

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 09/02/2012 16:11

YABU. It is a complete non issue.

usualsuspect · 09/02/2012 16:13

Some people are interested though . The news can't always be about what you are interested in so YABU

StealthPolarBear · 09/02/2012 16:20

But surely people dying should be reported above men kicking a ball?

LaBoccaDellaVerita · 09/02/2012 16:23

But Syria is being reported. Do you mean you'd like wall to wall coverage and every single other story dropped unless it was about someone dying?

How odd.

StealthPolarBear · 09/02/2012 16:28

No sorry this is a real example from a little while ago. And I didn't say I didn't want anything other than people dying reported (did i? On phone). Just that when reading the headines they tend to go in order of importance ( murder -- clever dog that dials for pizza) and I found it really disrespectful that the football was first

PopcornBiscuit · 09/02/2012 16:28

YANBU. Am I missing something - or is football only a game? :o

Sport is emphasised much too highly (personally I think the Olympics are a big waste of money) when there are so many other important things in life and this country as well.

I preferred the interesting, important news first, with the boring sport at the end so that the many people not interested could put the kettle on :o

Popcorn - exactly, it just seems so wrong to have sport mentioned before the things that actually matter; wars, israel about to bomb iran? the euro crisis etc.

Not that it shouldn't be reported at all, just that its not really very important.

Chem - my point about football not being played in most girls schools was because someone seemed to think that football is played in all schools.

OP posts:
LadyMontdore · 09/02/2012 16:38

My understanding of the story is that england football captain is awaiting trial for racism. Clearly should not be captain. Football manager has resigned because he disagrees. Obviously doesn't understand much beyond ball kicking.

Is not worthy of majority of news broadcast.

OP posts:
BelfastBloke · 09/02/2012 16:43

No, Popcorn, it's quite clear that football is not only a game.

"things that actually matter"; "not really very important"; "Clearly should not"; "Obviously doesn't understand much"; "Is not worthy..."

I'm glad everything is so obvious to you, LadyMontdore. Everyone should clearly share your opinions on everything.

So you don't believe that someone should be presumed innocent until proven guilty?

StealthPolarBear · 09/02/2012 16:54

I don't think wags and gossip are headline news either. Does anyone really think the outcome of a football match should be reported ahead of a death?

BelfastBloke · 09/02/2012 16:58

Yeah, I do. People die every day. Some of the deaths are newsworthy, some of them aren't.

There are footy matches every day. Some of the results are newsworthy, some of them aren't.

PopcornBiscuit · 09/02/2012 16:59

"football is not only a game."

Yes it is. It gets dressed up as something meaningful, pomp and circumstance get piled on to the large events, and people even become interested in what clothes the girlfriend of a footballer is wearing. But that doesn't mean that underneath it all, it is anything more than a game.
