Seen the news this morning about loads of people getting stuck in the snow AGAIN!!
Every year we are warned to only travel if we need to, but clearly some think they know better and put themselves and others at risk.

I suppose price will depend on model of car.

kelly2000 · 06/02/2012 02:22

I know someone who got stuck last night for several hours, not because we had a lot of snow (seriusly two inches), but because some idiots saw a bit of snow and decided to leave their cars in the road and find hotels, thereby causing massive traffic jams.

I learned my winter driving in the northern midwest of the US ('the snowbelt') and have always driven a 4x4 (much derided) as a result. If people in large areas of the US were as clueless about snow driving as the cowboys in the UK and Ireland are there would be carnage on the roads from November to April.

And what snowy roads need is salt, not grit.

My mum used to send us all to school on snowy days and then we would have to get a lift home from dad when the school turned out to be closed and all the buses off, in Dublin.

In UK snow language grit = salt.

I assume price of tyres depends on the model of car. For DH's cat they are definitely very expensive! Less so for mine I assume.

mathanxiety · 06/02/2012 20:21

They ran out in Ireland last time and were using sand or sawdust. Or magical fairy dust for all the good it did..

ShellyBoobs · 06/02/2012 23:54

Hulababy even though your DH's car is 4wd, it doesn't help with stopping and steering. A 4wd on summer tyres is no better than a 2wd on summer tyres other than dor going up hill.

By the way, I've currently got a big 4wd Audi thing with winter tyres and that's definitely no better than my 2wd Golf was with winter tyres.

I think for me, the ideal is 2wd and winter tyres unless you live somewhere that has such deep snow on the roads that you need a high up 4wd just so you don't get stuck on top of the snow.

I've got an old fiesta which coped brilliantly with the snow on Saturday evening. We sailed past lots of newer/bigger cars stuck on slight inclines, it did take me two hours to do 20 miles but I didn't get stuck once.
Did smirk a few times when I saw people trying to move their cars by flooring the accelerator Grin

Not everyone has the option of staying at home in winter. Nurses/medical staff/carers/essential workers.Country would grind to a halt.

My town is always the first to get snow.I would never go out for winter and only twice in 11 years have I refused to travel. And thats only cos it was like 4 feet deep!

Apart from that I learned to drive in snow and have snow socks.problem always caused by eejits that think they are invincible and drive like loons.
